New 9Bolt Posi !!!!!

I have been a member here for awhile but have never been inclined to post. I hope this is not old news. If it is, sorry.

I was at a tech seminar with a rep from Eaton/ Detroit Locker this morning and we were told that Eaton will have a posi unit available for the 3rd gen F-Body and new GTO crowd using the Borg Warner 9Bolt, by the end of the year.

SweetRide45 02-02-2007 01:45 PM

No $hit? I was gonna see how my 9 holds up to my new powerhouse and if it dies, get a 9" or 12 bolt....There may STILL b potential for it yet!

1989GTATransAm 02-02-2007 06:28 PM

Good news. The nine bolt is a good unit. Just needs more market support.

Did they say anything regarding the relative strength of the nine bolt?

Jetmeck 02-02-2007 11:20 PM

The new GTO uses the SAME 9 bolt differential ? Are we sure of this ?

67camaro 02-03-2007 08:05 AM

Hello,

No, they are a different 9Bolt , but Eaton will have one for the new GTO as well.

They did not give any strength specifics, but I am sure it will be as strong as their existing products.

CashMunson 02-03-2007 02:32 PM

i'd put money they come out with a unit for the new gto and nothing for our fbody 9 bolt.

67camaro 02-03-2007 04:42 PM

There are many more F-Bodys produced that came with 9Bolts than GTOs that use the other type.

One of the reasons we were told this is that there is a rather large need for these units in Europe and Australia. They were used in Vauxalls(spelling) and of course Holdens.

I work in the performance aftermarket industry and have been told by vendors, of new products that were on the horizon but were never produced, I am getting good at telling who is full of %$& and who is not.

I am pretty confident that these units will be available and who better to do it than Eaton.

Stupid question: Is this just the POSI, or gears and POSI? Or are they just going to sell a whole 9 bolt rear?

67camaro 02-05-2007 01:33 PM

Posi unit (carrier) only.

Norwood 02-11-2007 08:38 PM

I definitely want to know if and when this might happen....

84z28350 02-11-2007 09:08 PM

if only i had a 9bolt :p

Good to hear for you guys though, i know alot of people cry about parts for their 9bolts :D

Hopefully eaton goes through with it, they definately have the resources for it. They are one hell of a huge company!

acescarrsRS 02-11-2007 10:56 PM

Man, I hope they do make it!!!! Something told me not to change out my gears yet & put on the new girdle from TA. Now I'm glad I waited :)

Brisk 02-11-2007 11:39 PM

I'll be in line waiting to buy one.. either that or I'll be trading my 9 bolt in for a 9"

acescarrsRS 03-11-2007 07:09 AM

How soon before we know for sure if this is a go for Eaton?

67camaro 03-12-2007 06:32 PM

All I was told was that it would be by the end of the year.

Re: New 9Bolt Posi !!!!!

9-bolt parts availability is problematic.

I noticed my RH axle seal leaking on my 9-bolt. so I thought it'd be a good idea to replace the seals, both sides. I went to the NAPA store, they only had the RH seal (luckily), but no LH seal, no diff cover gasket. not even in the warehouse, can't even be ordered or brought in. not obtainable, also not available from CSK Parts America. I'd be happy if the little parts like this were READILY available. to add insult to injury, the RH seal was $20. by comparison, the seal for the 7-5/8 diff is only $3. gheez.

I'll have to try the GM dealer parts department. I wonder why there're separate part numbers for the RH and LH axle seal, compared to other run-of-the-mill axle seals.

several of the gear resellers have the overhaul kit for the 9-bolt, but you're talking $150 for the kit-n-kaboodle. all I need is the seals and diff cover gasket. I think I can get by without pulling the diff cover off, though. oh well.

Re: New 9Bolt Posi !!!!!

I went down to my local GM dealer and bought 2 9 bolt differential cover gaskets about 4 months ago. They were $12.99 a piece I believe, was only going to buy 1, but hey, they had 2, I bought 2! GM still sells these, they cant be that hard to get a hold of.

Summit does sell 370 gears for the 9 bolt....go to summitracing.com and type in 7.75 in the search box....no limited slip tho

Re: New 9Bolt Posi !!!!!

You can get many different ratio gears for the Borg Warner 9 bolt from a company called Motospecs in Australia. I just bought 3:45 ratio gears from them. It was very pricey compared to buying from a place like Summit. The gears were over $300 and shipping was almost $150.

Re: New 9Bolt Posi !!!!!

I called Eaton Torque Division today and the rep I spoke to said they had no plans to develop a carrier for the Borg Warner 9 bolt. He told me the market was too small and it was not worth the development costs to do it. Are we sure it was Eaton and not another company that was going to make the new carrier?

Re: New 9Bolt Posi !!!!!

I have looked at the Eaton. They now make a Detroit Truetrac for the GTO I do not know for certain if it will fit the 9 bolt. It may not. There is a chance the GTO uses the BTR 80 diff as opposed to the BTR 78 Borg Warner in the GTA and IROC

Norwood 05-16-2009 02:15 PM

Re: New 9Bolt Posi !!!!!

The people at Eaton ought to know if it is compatable with the nine bolt. I would think it's not or else they would advertise it as such. But would be nice if it did work!!

Re: New 9Bolt Posi !!!!!

I think you can still get a new 9-Bolt from Australia.
The Borg Warner 9 Bolt Rearend is actually called the M78 Rearend or "78 series". It has been made since the late 60's in Australia by a company called BTR Engineering Ltd. BTR was bought out by Borg-Warner under which company name the rears were produced for our cars. In the last few years Borg-Warner was bought out by Dana Corp. and the rears are still produced by Dana today in the same BTR factory under the "Spicer Axles Australia" name.

I also bought new 3:45 ratio gears from Motospecs. The gears were over $300 and shipping was almost $150.

I am looking for a full 9bolt, good or possible to rebuild.
I also looking for (more important), a right caliper bracket (backing plate?) for a 9 bolt disc rear.
Let me know.

Thanks

I'm 6 miles off I75 about 25 miles south of Chattanooga, TN. I'm about 85 miles north of Atlanta, also on I75.
I bought this rear from a friend about two years ago to use in a 41 Chevy pickup, and bought the disc setup from ebmiller on tgo, and took rear apart to check it out, and it's still sitting in shop with axles and back plate pulled. It looks okay, and it came out of a Camaro that was wrecked in rollover. It had the older mickey mouse brakes. I believe the Camaro was 87-88, but the brake setup I got from ebmiller came off 91 I think.

I found the Truetrac for the Pontiac GTO on Summit however it is $899 and does not list the 7.75 9 bolt as an application.

Re: New 9Bolt Posi !!!!!

good luck! i got 2 9bolts and both are peg legging it. gona dump it for a ford 8.8. not sure why eaton would spend money in producing something for the 9bolt when GM JUST SHUT THE PONTIAC DIVISON DOWN! they are no longer producing pontiacs. so no more GTOs etc... so prices on the goats are going through the roof now. and it wouldnt be intellegent or cost effective for eaton to send money on R&D and prototyping etc for a posi unit for 2 cars (GTO/3rd gen) when they are both never gona be produced again. they will be discontinued, there numbers will drop due to accidents/age etc and there will be hardly a market for them to sell for. i wish this wasnt so... but GM did just announce they took pontiac off the map. sry guys. looks like my 9bolts are just for show now :(

still i wish they would still produce it.
