Re: vortec switch I have never heard of GT beast heads, so I am not sure if they are good. Vortec heads are good but I would get anything used checked out by a machine shop and you will also need new springs. |
Re: vortec switch Christ! is this guy saying that he wants to buy some Vortec stuff - and is asking for opinions on it? is he selling Vortec stuff? I give the OP an "incomplete" for this thread. |
Re: vortec switch No I was pricing out the switch I got a street demon carb aside from the heads I can get a vortec style intake and a 262 cam and I got bbl headers amd a custom dual 2 pipe exhaust I got 282 heads gd cond and my edelbrock intake resell that and I'm paying about $500 max I read up on the switch same ecact 260 hp engine only diff was the cam anything else I need? |
Re: vortec switch Anything else you need for the Vortec switch? Not trying to be a tool, just clarifying your question. Please post some numbers/names/specifics on all the parts that you've aquired. |
Re: vortec switch I didn't buy anything yet just researching google summit and readinghttp://books.google.com/books?id=5LZFlCjG4CcC&pg=PA34&lpg=PA27&ots=NPwP4Y3hMl&focus=viewport&dq=10067353+the+goodwrench+quest&output=html_text |
Re: vortec switch Ah, ok then. Well then post all that info on the ones you want. something like this: block: heads: cam: intake: rockers: etc etc etc Mods, this thread should probably be moved to the tech/general engine thread, maybe, but it's definitely in the wrong spot here (lol) Try using the search bar at the top of the forum and just searching Vortec or Vortec Swap. Read up on what other guys are doing and then come back with a more complete vision in mind. |
Re: vortec switch I actually have Vortec stuff on my car. is he asking if he should switch from what he has to Vortec stuff? i'm still not sure what is going on in this thread. OP, I am not a grammar Nazi - I'm really not. but c'mon. you wrote this: No I was pricing out the switch I got a street demon carb aside from the heads I can get a vortec style intake and a 262 cam and I got bbl headers amd a custom dual 2 pipe exhaust I got 282 heads gd cond and my edelbrock intake resell that and I'm paying about $500 max I read up on the switch same ecact 260 hp engine only diff was the cam anything else I need? brevity is great, but you have to slow it down and express yourself in a way that people are going to understand. |

Let me see if I can translate. No I am pricing out the parts needed to do a vortec conversion based on ???? I have a street demon carb but I don't know what size or type of secondaries. To mount my carb to vortec heads I am willing to buy a vortec style intake of some unknown type. I also have a line on a 262 cam hopefully NOT USED because that would be bad and with NEW lifters. I have headers and a custom dual exhaust. Right now I have some 282 heads that I am guessing are in good condition and an edelbrock intake. I am hoping to sell these parts to offset the cost of the vortec conversion. I expect to pay about $500 max on this swap. I have read up on the swap with a similar but NOT my 260 hp engine. The only difference were THE MOST IMPORTANT things being the cam and heads plus any other parts SD added to it. Is there anything else I need? Did I get it right? |
Re: vortec switch patriots781 I have a '91 Firebird with a 350 engine (L98, 260 hp GM Crate, or '86 or older transplant?) My 350 is equipped with a Street Demon carb and GT Beast heads (whatever the **** those are.) Also on the car (or not on the car?)are bbl (you mean BBK?) headers and a custom true dual set up. I can get a set of Vortec heads, Vortec intake, and a Comp 262 (218/224) cam for $420-$500. should I get this stuff and make the switch to Vortec? Is there anything else that I would need to make this switch? *edit* Medias, you beat me to it. |
Re: vortec switch if my translation is correct, then my best answer to your question is NO, probably not. 1. My Vortec heads are aluminum (Fast Burn) and they have D shaped exhaust ports. if the Vortec heads you are considering also have D shaped exhaust ports they will not fit your headers that you have now. you will have to get some D port headers which don't exist specifically for a 3rd Gen. you'd have to get some with primaries big enough to cover the exhaust ports. 2. if the custom dual exhaust isn't already on the car, it seems like a bad idea to go with that type of exhaust as our cars just weren't made for it, and you will likely suffer from ground clearance and other jalopy issues. 3. unless you have the mechanical skills to do this installation, the labor is going to cost you a lot more than $500. 4. what do you mean by "Turbo Transmission" below your avatar? TH350? 700R4? just curious. 5. is your car a daily driver / sole means of transportation? can you put up some pics so we can see the condition that its in? |
Re: vortec switch Ya th350 so no headers exist then how are all these people doin the switch the dude in scrog dickey book did it with my 260 hp engine n got 400 hp w everythn ......I have no idea how many cfm the custom dual exhaust is already on my car and I haven't seen a v8 firebird without a dual exhaust setup so idk what your talking about......as far as my car the only part in my whole car that has a number is the heads I know I have a street demon carb edelbrock intake 260 hp engine gm so I just bought this car so I'm still trying to identify but I mean if the guy from tht book csn do the switch w my engine he used 1 3/4 hooker chassis headers so I don't get it |

Hedman Hedders makes D-port longtube headers, so that is what is on my car. They fit and everything is just peachy. That being said, you have to research the headers you want to buy and get some measurments (of the headers, and inside the engine bay) to make sure that they will fit and have plenty of clearance around things. another fyi-with longtube headers, a mini-starter as opposed to the regular sized starter, is a must in most cases. Something to think about Most v-8 firebirds that you've seen do not have dual exhaust. Two exhaust tips coming out under the bumper does not equal dual exhaust. These cars have a shared single pipe that goes from the manifolds back, under the passenger side, over the rear axle, into the muffler and then have two exits that come from the muffler under the bumper. TRUE DUALS are 2 pipes, one from each header/manifold, all the way out. My car, and many others, have these. They do have to be carefully constructed due to clearance issues. But they do not come from the factory like this. |

You might want to re-post your question in the engine section. |
Re: vortec switch god dammit...don't really want to be in this thread anymore, but I don't want to leave a loose end either... so allow me to explain. building a car is usually a compromise, a balancing act if you will, between out and out performance and normal operations drivability. Third (and Fourth) Gen F-Bodies are low to the ground, and in order to maintain normal drivability, I knew I wanted shorty or tuned length headers - NOT full lengths which invariably have an impact on ground clearance, which has an impact on normal drivability. in 2011 when I was putting my combination together, there was no such thing as a shorty or tuned length header WITH D SHAPED PRIMARIES made to fit a third gen. my LT1 Camaro had D-port heads, and headers that were made to fit the car. those headers would not fit a 3rd Gen (I don't think.) the exhaust ports on typical rectangular port headers (what 3rd Gens usually have) are too small to cover the exhaust ports on D-Port heads. okay? so my solution was to buy Dyno Don headers (made to fit a 3rd Gen) but with extra large (elongated) rectangular exhaust ports. this way, the exhaust primaries on the headers were big enough to cover the exhaust openings on the cylinder heads. therefore, my solution is a reflection of the fact that (two or three years ago) I could not find ANY source where I could get a shorty/tuned length header that matched the following criteria: Type of Car: 82-92 Camaro/Firebird Header Length: Shorty or Tuned Length Primary Size: 3/4" or 5/8" Exhaust Port: D-Shaped/Vortec |
