Motorsport Tech custom adapters 8 Attachment(s) Bought some custom wheel adapters and installed them with new wheels and new lugs. Followed the directions, cleaned the rotors, torqued both the adapter and wheel to spec per directions and here is my results. I used two different brand lugnuts and each of the two studs that twisted off were in both brand lugs. No oil or anti-seize was used and the lugs were installed DRY! All five lugs where hand started before any were tightened down and no air/power tools were used. The studs were flush with the wheel and not too long or too short, nor where the lugs too short or too long. The lugs where both the same style and correct for the wheel type. I called and spoke to the boss(Lenny) who wanted me to send in the adapters and lugs, but I would have to pay for shipping and if it was found to be the studs they used he would replace the bad studs. I asked about replacement of my lugs and got no answer. The adapters were bought in December when they had a sale and he mentioned it had been awhile. I explained I live in Michigan and the weather just started to get nice enough for me too mess with the car, because of the winter that wouldn't end. If they had not been on sale I would have bought them in spring. He tried to tell me these are not cheap studs, the studs WS-327B are china mass produced. At one point he started to giggle when I was telling him all the details. I reviewed Motorsport tech a bit before I made my purchase and I should have dug a little deeper, now I find complaints about the owner and lack of care for problems or support. Lenny is described as smug and bothered by your business and when I placed my owned he complained of all the people calling at once and cut me off and put me on hold before I was able to say I'd just call back later. I should have taken that as a sign of his inferior work ethic and product. Motorsport Tech custom adapters and china studs! They care about your money and not your car or your life! Re: Motorsport Tech custom adapters So are the last few rows of threads deep inside the lugnuts not cut properly? That's the only way I can think of to account for only the first few turns of the stud being screwed up. |
Re: Motorsport Tech custom adapters Those studs don't look long enough to me. Shouldn't they stick out past the rim like a 1/4 inch or so? The lugs should be threaded all the way down the collar, so they should not have twisted off the studs tops like that. The studs look like they were sort of brittle looking at the break in the lug nuts pic. However, looking at the studs pic they almost appear soft in the way they are damaged. Tough break. If it was me I would replace the studs myself rather than risk some replacement from a guy who clearly has no sense of customer service or quality, plus you will know exactly what studs you have in them. I mean really, it's only your life, right? Why take the risk when you know the replacements will be of the same quality. |

I'll either replace the studs with better or buy new adapters from another vendor. |
Re: Motorsport Tech custom adapters 2 Attachment(s) Here is a messed up thread only new-new lug cut in half. I have not cut the broken tips lugs because I am still debating how I will cut them. I will most likely cut a 1/4 pie section all the way down too try too retain the slug(tip) in it's location. Wish I had access to my college engineering classes equipment! A rockwell hardness tester, tensile testing machine(I forget the name) or just some of the saws they had would make this better. I only have a regular & mini die grinder at my disposal and I wasn't sure how the cuts would turn out. This lug was cut with the regular, but I'm thinking mini for the pie cut. You can see the threads go beyond the stud and have no end tapper end like a tapered tap would leave and in fact will allow you too cut the tip off and run a much longer stud than the lug itself. Re: Motorsport Tech custom adapters FYI I bought a EZ-accessories set of adapters and another set of lugs and they go on way easier! Fit the hub nice too! .002 diff I'm sure of it now the motorsport tech studs were junk or just not spaced right, it was the studs one way or another. Also the hub centric was way off, my hubs are 2.759 and they were 2.781. |
Re: Motorsport Tech custom adapters Motorsport is an excellent company that takes care of their customers. Nobody is perfect, but they do try hard. |
Re: Motorsport Tech custom adapters Maybe then Weld wheels was the problem or GM! Oh wait I used the same car & wheels with another brand and had no problem. I buy a lot of parts from a really lot of diff places and I see a decent amount of parts that have an issue and how a manufacturer handles that issue is a big part of it because stuff happens. The owner though it was a joke, but it was a very real problem that did not happen with another brands adapters. The EZ-accessories adapters even looked a little beat up due to poor shipping packaging, but they work perfect. I have a degree in engineering, I've worked in customer service & quality control. Plus I'm always willing to go the extra mile and take the time to do something right and try to be patient if there is a problem sooo... I keep parts like these as a reminder of the few shady places that are out there. |
Re: Motorsport Tech custom adapters I hear you, man. Nobody likes to be treated badly when doing business with any company. I just have extensive experience with this particular company, and its all been positive. I do business with them direct, and I refer people to them, BECAUSE they are reputable, honest, knowledgable, and make a high quality product. Everybody has a bad day. I'm sure you've had one or two. I know I have. I'm not saying that what happened is excusable, but I'm pretty sure it's not the norm over at Motorsport. They build thousands of adapters every year, and deal with hundreds of customers every month. To have a bad experience with them is rare. Again, no excuses, but Jr is a good guy and, I think that, if you both had approached this calmly, it might not have worked out the way it did. |
Re: Motorsport Tech custom adapters Anyone is welcome to risk their vehicle or their LIFE & maybe others with that place's poor product. I'm just glad I only lost $ and shared my experience for others to make their own choice. After my experience I read online other poor reviews of their product & the owner, so I know this wasn't a onetime deal. From my experience a scammer or someone that knows they have a problem will get defensive real fast. |
Re: Motorsport Tech custom adapters A "scammer"? I don't think the tens of thousands of customers that have done business with him for 25 years would agree with you. I certainly don't. |
Re: Motorsport Tech custom adapters Well not like I just joined up and only posted in this thread to debate with you now :) |
Re: Motorsport Tech custom adapters No debate. I happened to notice your comment and I know Motorsport is NOT as you've described. I'm not doubting that it happened to you, nor trying to justify their alleged behavior in any way, but I'm suggesting that it is not the norm. |
Re: Motorsport Tech custom adapters the thread pitch on the lug nut looks different from the stud. The stud is M12, those lug nuts look like they are SAE |
Re: Motorsport Tech custom adapters If you look at the pics you can see they are 12mm and also one of the types were used on weld draglite wheels on a thirdgen stock studs prior to these adapters. |
Re: Motorsport Tech custom adapters So you just went ahead and forced them on there? |
Re: Motorsport Tech custom adapters What? They are both(stud and two lug brands) 12mm 1.5 or should have been. LOL now your just making me repeat what I've posted before. I highly doubt two brands of lugs were both defective. |
Re: Motorsport Tech custom adapters I've been thinking of ordering a set of custom adapters from Motorsport-Tech, but the resurrection of this thread from its 2-year hiatus has left me with doubt. On one hand, "it" happens, even with the best of companies, so I would think that their adapters are probably good products, and it's probably safe to go ahead with my order. The part of this thread that bugs me, however, is that samburnell's only posts are on this thread. He apparently found this 2-year old thread through a web search, and he seems to have joined TGO just to refute the claims found in this thread. That makes me wonder who he is, and what his "stake" in this might be. And that makes me doubt the credibility of both, him and Motorsport-Tech, because it would seem that something "fishy" might be afoot. At least I'm not in a rush, so I have plenty of time to do my own research. |
