Speed engineering ls swap headers

Got my speed engineering headers in. They really are 1-7/8 or just a hair shy. What I like best is the clearance off the flange (no sharp bend right away) and best of all... the collector. A nerge bullet and a smooth necked down throat instead of a big step like the racing innovations obx or whatever ones. These ones are china made also but the primaries are clean.

Please post pics when you install them.

I'd like to add the pics I took to this thread. I'm fitting my engine/trans for measuring wire length, but I threw the headers on and took some pics.

You can see that the drivers side O2 location could be better. You have to install the sensor with the headers lose, then tighten them down. Also have to loosen the harness's loom on the sensor. It is touching the trans, but does fit.

Re: Speed engineering ls swap headers

Looks like a pretty tight fit. Does it touch the frame rails at all? My RI headers touch. Just curious as to how they fit around the tight spots

Re: Speed engineering ls swap headers

Looks much better than the RI headers though.

Plug clearance is good

I have these and the Racing Innovation headers too. Could take side by side pics if you guys want.

The tube routing is different, primaries are different sizes obviously, close in price, collectors are different lengths, O2 locations/angles are slightly different.

Overall not THAT much different I'd say.

Looks like they touch the sub frame in the last pic on the right/passenger side outboard of the starter flange. Any other pics of this area? I'm just cautious since I've already wasted 300.00 on the RI headers.

Twin_Turbo, you mind posting the part number? I literally just found Speed Engineering today. Was about to go with some mid length Headman Huslers ones, but these cost less and look great.

I thought that was it, but I wasn't sure.

Re: Speed engineering ls swap headers

Just saw these and logged in to make sure these had been posted on here. I have 4 sets of SE headers. I modified a 2nd gen set last year to fit my GTA. Glad they finally came out with these.

Re: Speed engineering ls swap headers

Any chance you can take a pair of calipers to one of the primaries for a measurement? Curious if these are indeed 1 7/8 ID.

Twin_Turbo 04-30-2017 02:26 PM

Re: Speed engineering ls swap headers

I did, they are 1-7/8 and in some sections because of the mandrel bends just a hair under

Black18Ice 04-30-2017 02:27 PM

Re: Speed engineering ls swap headers

So they measured about 2" or so then? Thanks.

Twin_Turbo 04-30-2017 03:38 PM

Re: Speed engineering ls swap headers

No they measured 1-7/8. That's OD not ID

Re: Speed engineering ls swap headers

I also ordered these, wasn't really happy with the RI ones I have.

I have both sets of headers,
hawks y pipe
SLP loudmouth 2

now hoping that these headers will take less modification to make my exhaust work. also running 4l60e. so ill soon find out how the fitment is.

Re: Speed engineering ls swap headers

Mine will be arriving in a couple days. To those who have them installed, what plug wires did you get? I don't want them to be too long and touch the headers.

Re: Speed engineering ls swap headers

I just put a set of these in my 89. No fitment issues, but #8 spark plug is a real PITA. Not a big deal to have to struggle with one plug though.

Looks good. When you get it on the ground can you take a ground clearance picture? especially of the RH header. I have Racing Innovation headers and the RH collector sits lower than the Left just curious at how these compare, I have all but scraped thru the RH collector because of how low it sits the LH has never hit anything. Thanks

I am having the same problem with my stainless works headers. The right header/collector hangs below the front subframe. I have even shimmed the passenger side mount up an inch or so which helped, but did not correct the problem.

Dreambird 07-20-2017 09:26 AM

Re: Speed engineering ls swap headers

I have been contemplating cutting the primary down tubes and having a welding shop weld them back together to bring it up a couple inches, luckily these headers are inexpensive enough if it doesn't work it doesn't break the bank to get another set, it would suck to mess up a set of Hawks or stainless works headers.

Re: Speed engineering ls swap headers

It seems that every set of long tube swap headers (other than Hooker) I've seen has the same problem. I often wonder if it has something to do with servicing the starter???

Dreambird 07-20-2017 12:43 PM

Re: Speed engineering ls swap headers

Possibly so , if it ends up being a issue I'll just remove the header to change the starter its not too often one gets changed but good point.

This shows the Y pipe better than the collectors but I think ground clearance is good. My car is on Eibach springs, I think 1.5" drop springs.

I work in Afghanistan and I'm back at work on. I should've taken more pictures.

I don't think they could tuck up much better than this. They don't look like they're much below the oil pan

Looks way better than my current setup.....

Maybe when I finally pull the trigger on my head swap I will consider redoing my exhaust.

thanks for the pics!

i would kill for that kind of clearance. my passenger side header of my RI's is getting flattened with the terrible clearance.

Which trans crossmember and torque arm did you use? I'm trying to do this one time ... Any help is appreciated

Re: Speed engineering ls swap headers

Will these headers clear if im still runing my stock T5 trans? Due to the clutch slave cyl? If anyone knows please let me know I’m already $300 deep into different headers that don’t work thanks.

Re: Speed engineering ls swap headers

You must have been suckered into the Racing Innovations headers like so many of us not wanting to pay 1100.00 for headers. These Speed Engineering headers fit much better than the RI headers. I spoke to the guy at RI he said they were made off a third gen car, I wonder which manufacture third gen, not a GM model, they don't fit. I bought a set of the RIs and no matter how you look at it the Speed Engineering headers I bought fit much better. I have the RIs hanging on the wall in my garage (they make a nice wall display) to remind me to do more research next time I buy.

I've finished my exhaust system with these headers. The full build can be found starting at post #462 here:

Re: Speed engineering ls swap headers

Has anyone ran these with a 4l60E yet? How is the clearance for the shifter linkage and the O2 sensors? Seem to be able to find the pics with everyone running a T56 so was wondering how it was with a bigger trans.

Re: Speed engineering ls swap headers

Anyone have any advise on installing the passenger side header? I can't seem to get mine installed, it is hitting the firewall and aft head bolt.

Jack the motor up, pull the starter.

Thanks I'll give that a shot this morning,
