Holley Sniper EFI and Hyperspark Distributor

So my Sniper efi and distributor showed up today. I'll look to get working on installing it this Friday and Saturday. I'll post pics along the way and give any insight I might have. Really excited to get the car up and running again as it's been way too long. Also plan on taking it later this summer to get dyno tuned locally.

Re: Holley Sniper EFI and Hyperspark Distributor

How are you running the fuel system? In tank or inline?
Just a few helpful things I picked up from my install
1. Get a progressive linkage with my car it was extremely difficult not to burn out with regular at least with my manual trans and 3.42 rear. Watch a video on how to install and set the TPS
2. Get a fixed orifice PVC valve it helps to stabilize the IAC values and you can reuse the plastic elbow
3. Install a fuel pressure gauge on the inlet of the sniper
4, Add a isolation relay for the 12V ignition wire so it gets nice steady voltage from the battery
5. if you are running a dual plane manifold get a open spacer to help with fuel mix.
6. Run a 10awg wire for the fuel pump all the way back to the battery.
7. make or buy the tool to remove unused wires from the harness.
8. Your alternator looks suspiciously like the 63A duralast I had in my car. If it is you might want to upgrade to a 94A

Re: Holley Sniper EFI and Hyperspark Distributor

I'll see about obtaining the linkage. I have an open spacer and a 4 hole phenolic on the way. I'm running an in tank fuel pump. Not sure on the alternator but I'll look into. Why would you recommend the upgrade?

The linkage is available from amazon the link provided above part number 43-2QFT. There is also an adjustable version I just gave mine a little bend in a vice to make sure my transition was right at 40% throttle. I have no proof I needed a stronger alternator but I did notice when my lights were on and radio on at idle my voltage would drop to about 13.2 - 13.5 on the sniper screen I was worried because with lights off I was charging around 14.2. For $70 I was happy with peace of mind. No more weird drops and nice steady voltage. I also have a 4 hole spacer leftover from my carb days no idea how the sniper would like it. I also upgraded to a 6awg charging wire mostly because I had some around the house.

After about 7 years with a carb I am loving EFI. Just need the snow that came back to go away.

Re: Holley Sniper EFI and Hyperspark Distributor

Welcome to the sbc sniper efi club !
there are a few of us on here.
I have a 406 sbc with a 12 bolt also, but not the 5 speed like you do.

I have had my sniper up and running since feb of 2020. I switched over to to the hyperspark in the summertime after my MSD digital 6 box took a dump. The sniper has been great, as has the hyperspark.

Get eh fixed orifice PVC. I got the BWD brand one at advanced auto parts like $6

Get the laptop can-bus cable and the y-splitter so you can use a laptop to tune the tables in real time.

I went with the phenolic 4-hole spacer because I had the "sniper whistle" and while it sounded cool at first, it got annoying.

I did not bother with the progressive linkage, nor do I plan on doing that. I went with all lokar cables, brackets, and whatnot.

ONLY connect the sniper and hyperspark directly to the battery. yes you will have to extend your wires, but ther are so many UNNECESSARY horro stories of people chasing electronic problems because tehy ran the power to a distribution block or to a ground stud. just do it once and do it right by running the wires to the battery itself.

midias 04-23-2021 09:51 AM

Re: Holley Sniper EFI and Hyperspark Distributor

I went directly to the battery with my unit as well. I also ran a 10-gauge wire from my fuel pump all the way back to my battery instead of just relying on the little stud on the body. I did not have any issues with noise on my ignition line but as a preventative measure I ran my 12 volt source to a relay coil and when I turn on my ignition I now get battery power to that wire so it's nice and clean.

Re: Holley Sniper EFI and Hyperspark Distributor

I got it all done today and it fired right up....I did have to replace my fan relay and then drove it slowly around the block. Realized I still needed to switch the TPS and other settings so I just pulled it in. Shut down and now the fuel pump just quit working. It was a brand new walbro pump put in a week ago. I think a connector must have loosened. I'll dig into it tomorrow.

Re: Holley Sniper EFI and Hyperspark Distributor

good news, bad news. Got it up and running only for the brand new pump to go out after running for 10 minutes. I shot power and grounds back to the pump and verified that the pump indeed quit working. Got a new Aeromotive fuel pump today and will be putting it back together. Also received my new valve covers, and should receive the air cleaner today. Still need to verify the timing with the Sniper and then it'll be ready to go out on an actual drive.

Re: Holley Sniper EFI and Hyperspark Distributor

Was it an external pump? Did you bleed the air out of the line before starting the car?

IROCZman15 05-06-2021 08:49 PM

Re: Holley Sniper EFI and Hyperspark Distributor

yup, do some static timing checks at idle and at 3,500 rpm. adjust the inductive delay if needed also. then you should be good to go

An internal pump...factory replacement. How do you bleed the air out? Are you referring to priming it? If so, yes. I let it prime.

FYI your strut tower plate is still in the wrong place.. this pic if from Spohns web site.. but with most of there parts..it Probably don't matter..

I looked and looked to try and see the stack up. I didn't see it on the website.....I'll change it. No harm but the pride!!! Haven't driven it yet.

Re: Holley Sniper EFI and Hyperspark Distributor

I did get it up and running, however, the IAC would jump up and down and then I was able to finally get it set only for what I believed to be RF interference cause some issues. I moved my power wire for the fuel pump away from the o2 sensor and it seems better. I have a few more things to do then it'll be time to go out and drive it. It needs to learn bad. I'll get it dyno tuned this July/Aug if I can.

Re: Holley Sniper EFI and Hyperspark Distributor

The fuel pump wire was definitely causing issues. The new fuel pump has the fuel psi gauge pegged out though when running. I was thinking of adding a regulator before the sniper to bring it down a bit. I have the gauge up line....after the sniper regulator. Maybe I should move it. ?????? Took it out for a drive but it threw a belt. Have to replace it and move on. Small issues so far but nothing that couldn't easily be fixed.

Dope. Hoping to make the switch also. Picked up a sniper with the hyper-spark dizzy and coil for 500 bucks the other day. Got the screen, sniper unit, hyperspark dizzy and box and coil, coil harness and harnesses. I think it was a good deal if it works. Sniper fuel inlet was full of crud and all four injectors had debris in them. I hope it works if not hopefully I can get some cash back parting it out. I cleaned the fuel inlet and cleaned the injectors. Besides being a little dirty the thing looks pretty much new. Not sure which sniper it is It doesn't have a part number on it. What kind of hoses/fittings did you use to plumb the fuel lines? Wondering if I can use a pump from a Lt1 car? Any way to power on the sniper and see if it works without hooking everything up.?

I used an-6 lines. new fabric braided lines vs steel. Way better. I don't know how you'd be able to test it...but where there is a will there is a way. Just the CDI,Coil and distributor are worth more than $500 so that's a good deal.

Just gonna have to hook it up and see if it powers on. Yeah man I know, asked, what he had and said he had the whole kit and hell take 5. I wasn't gonna argue with him. Sketchy price but have been wanting to go efi for a while, so I took the chance after I saw what he had. Hopefully it works man fingers crossed. Trying to see if I can use the 2.8 v6 fuel lines and have them connect directly to the holley unit with some an6 fittings?

If you don't already have it , you could download the full manual from Holley.com downloads section.

It's vital the sniper is wired correctly with clean power supplied and good earth's.

Adding an ignition power relay to make sure that 12 volt is clean is also a good idea

Re: Holley Sniper EFI and Hyperspark Distributor

So my 92 came with tbi which I have read the stock tbi pump only puts out 10-13 psi. . While mocking up my fuel lines and verifying my fuel pressure guage was working I noticed when priming the pump, pressure would go to 20 psi and stay there. When turning my pump on, guage went up to 50- 55 psi. Why would someone swap out the fuel pump and keep the tbi. Haven't checked if there's a fuel trap door hack in my car yet. Wondering if someone

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...430272ec0d.jpg
swapped out the pump for higher pressure one but why keep tbi and if I could get away without swapping in a walbro 255. You guys see any issues with my lines and pressure gauge?

How it feels when swapping from carb to a Holley Sniper efi. Holley did a great job with this product no doubt. Didn't even have to swap out my pump. Best bolt on. Hands down. Can't believe how much power I was leaving on the table with the the Edelbrock. No issues yet. Now I need to work on my suspension.:)

so......after driving a whopping 4 miles and moving in and out of the garage 6 times my AFR now reads 35.6 when trying to start and won't. Am I wrong to think the O2 sensor already went out??? Where do you pick up a replacement one?

I have an AEM wideband o2 guage I picked up when I was "tuning" my carb and it came with a Bosch LSU 4.9 o2 sensor. When I installed the sniper I noticed the o2 plugged right in so I never installed the o2 that came with my kit. Works great no issues yet. Can be had for like 35 bucks on amazon or you can get from Holley for 100 plus. Exhaust leak maybe?

Repeated cold starts and idling can kill an O2 real quick. If you do a few cold starts, let it heat up properly to full temp occasionally.

Holley or EFISystempro.com have the sensors, most parts stores too.

The correct sensor is Bosch 17025.

Or you can try the 4.9 mentioned above.

I'm going to call Holley tomorrow. They were closed today. Some others have had issues like this and it was the ECM. It's going to take some troubleshooting.

Re: Holley Sniper EFI and Hyperspark Distributor

You should really research this on the Holley efi and Holley sniper forums. The answers are there, for sure; I have read about this many times but never had to deal with the issue myself, on Thirdgen you are only going to get a handful of people with Holley efi knowledge, where on the Holley forums, everyone is specifically there for Holley efi related reasons
