BORLAZ06 01-09-2003 01:59 PM

DAYM...looks like you pulled more than jus your motor. lol

good luck on your swap.

Kandied91z 01-09-2003 02:03 PM

yes.....what exactly did you do. you pulled the whole front end assembly down with it.

is that being replaced as well?

motor looks nice and clean though that's for sure.

what about the wiring harness and computer with that engine? might help to know if it's all coming with it.

i see the harness on top of the engine, do they plan to reuse that or are you paying 400 for a new one?

StocRoc 01-09-2003 02:11 PM

How much do they charge for labor?? Also are you going fuel injected or carbed?

1991 Z-28 01-09-2003 02:14 PM

yes only thing not coming with it is wiring harness, and distributor....

johnyIROC 01-09-2003 02:15 PM

:sillylol:

Haha... forgot to undo the engine mounts?

deal was 30$ an hour for labor... and im going with stealth ram injection

badgta 01-09-2003 02:19 PM

WTF??????

goddamn!!!! why the hell did he pull the front end out for????

i mean, yeah i guess you can get a motor out that way but i rather just pull the motor then the tranny......

damn

Kandied91z 01-09-2003 02:55 PM

yes, why did he do that? i'm just curious.....takes alot more time so it costs you more money. must be some reason.

i know i pulled my trans and then the engine.........was he trying to protect the paint or just couldn't think it would clear?

johnyIROC 01-09-2003 03:06 PM

It's pretty obvious that he pulled the engine from the bottom... but why on earth you would do that is beyond me. Unless you are clipping the front end or something.

JMatlock88 01-09-2003 03:10 PM

I've seen that done in 4th gens a lot (for obvious reasons)...but a thirdgen has plenty of top-removal clearance. Seems like a lot of trouble?

Kandied91z 01-09-2003 03:22 PM

well i don't know about plenty of clearance, as i had to remove the tpi intake to get mine out the top....maybe that's why the did what they did.

Der91Z 01-09-2003 03:31 PM

There is no reason for them to take the whole front suspension off with the motor since 1991 Z-28 is not getting a tubular k-member. I think somebody is just trying to earn a few extra dollars but i hope thirdgenresource has a good explanation for this since this car is only getting a ZZ4 T56 swap which is pretty much straight forward pull motor and trans out and install. I don't get it. This looks like a get over job if you ask me.

Kandied91z 01-09-2003 03:33 PM

that's what i was getting at, doesn't matter as both ways are fine; but when your paying someone for their time one is truly a longer way to go about it.

86FyrBrd 01-09-2003 04:07 PM

When I was getting mine done a guy wanted to do it that way, he said he could do it quicker that way. Maybe it is just their specialty that way.

Der91Z 01-09-2003 04:10 PM

Quicker? I don't see how, i think it would take more time taking the whole front end out.

1991 Z-28 01-09-2003 04:17 PM

yeah i emailed him asking him for an explaination as to why he did that, the guy does seem like he wants to make a little money off me, but he seemed trustworthy, specially since he is the owner of thirdgenresource.com, i hope there is a good explaination for doing it that way, i will know probably late tommorow the reason, ill post it up here

Fatal88 01-09-2003 04:24 PM

trust me.... it's alot easier taking it out from the bottom. That's the way I do it. If you've never done it this way how can you say it is harder???? It may be harder for those who don't own a shop and have all the necessary tools.
This guy is doing nothing wrong and is not trying to rip anyone off.... he's doing it the right way!:)

Adam62083 01-09-2003 04:25 PM

Maybe that way it wont damage any of the paint job. Lots of people tend to scratch the **** out of your fenders during engine swaps.

Might be a way to cover his *** if you have nice paint.

Der91Z 01-09-2003 04:29 PM

Fatal88, i see you have a 4th gen. I think thats the only way the motor will come out is through the bottom. but on the third gens i figure it would faster and less work to pull it from the top. I noticed that he doesn't pull the motor from the bottom on any of his other project vehicles. IDK I just how the bill isn't gonna be super huge for 1991 Z-28.

well coming from someone with experience that is nice to know... i would really hope im not getting ripped off considering im spending near 10 grand... like you said he does have his own shop and alot of experience, maybe that is the easiest way for him to do it..

I also have a 3rd gen.... that motor from the 4th gen slip right up UNDERNEATH my 3rd gen car - that's also how the motor originally came out of the 3rd gen. The motor has been in and out of that car more times than I care to think about.

I just get tired of everyone always thinking all shops are out to rip you off. We don't have time to spend jacking around on your cars - we have other cars to work on too. We don't make extra money doing unneccesary stuff.

Sauron91 01-09-2003 05:09 PM

Heyya Fatal..where exactly is Pearland?
That Ls1 thirdgen you have is niice ;)

86IROCNJ 01-09-2003 05:12 PM

But hey, sometimes you have people who will. Not everyone is trustworthy ya know! Not flaming, just stating a point, but not pointing fingers either. I must say, i have never seen it done that way but if you have the right tools, it probally would go quicker. I just know that there would be no way for me to do that in my driveway, thats for sure. Good luck with the swap 91! Whats the ETA? Later

Kandied91z 01-09-2003 05:21 PM

there is no reason to get upset over the topic, but the majority of people who own shops are out to make money and when they get opportunities like this to do a good majority of a large project most will try to "screw" you over with anything you want to do....especially if your younger or show inexperience. so i think there is a very good reason that people are asking what they are.

i for one had all the resources of our shops and chose to take it out through the top........was it easier. hell yes; but you have to decide, would you rather tear apart the intake or tear apart the front suspension, that and if you go through the top you risk the chance of damaging paint. now when i go to put it in i will go through the bottom......but that's only because of the front suspension was later removed for touch up.

either way are good ways and perfectly fine. with someone who knows what they are doing they are probably just as quick as well. but, without even thinking twice there is much more work involved with going through the bottom.

there is nothing wrong with questioning, especially when things aren't free.

i totally agree which is why i asked him... we will see what he says

Adam62083 01-09-2003 06:32 PM

I still think my reason makes the most sense :p

maroon91rs 01-09-2003 07:02 PM

dayum youre puttin 10 g's into that thing?what the hell are you doing at 19 to have 10k to dump in your car?and lemme in on it!!just wondering,no flame or anything intended.also what are you doing to it besides the motor and tranny?

86IROCNJ 01-09-2003 07:06 PM

Thats nothing! lol What would you think it would cost for all he is getting, plus labor?!

edit: hey, you edited it a little! lol

Der91Z 01-09-2003 07:12 PM

That 9k 1991 Z-28 is talking about, is including the labor and all.

1991 Z-28 01-09-2003 07:21 PM

its zz4 350, t56, jet hot hooker long tube headers, full new exhaust setup... not sure which muffler to go with yet? any help? i want the loudest possible but lowest possible sound??? im running no cats.... there is stealth ram , new injectors, spohn crossmember/torque arm , and there more i just cant think

badgta 01-09-2003 07:39 PM

hmmm

i met roy once when i went down there...... he's alright..

i figured he was doing suspension upgrades, but i don't know now.... ya go in for a motor tranny swap and ya come out with having to get your frontend lined? just dosen't sound right.....

Steve86TA 01-09-2003 09:24 PM

Hey 91Z Are you going to have hollow cats or no cats at all?MD will burn you if you have no cats, unless you have a waiver;)

polishdevil 01-09-2003 09:27 PM

My dad and I pulled the motor and tranny as one piece and installed it as one piece. We pulled the fans, radiator, ac stuff, alternator and the other accesories. Both were TPI motors and everything went smoothly.

Later

Dave

Also took the hood off.

MdFormula350 01-09-2003 10:03 PM

looks like its coming along good! your car is going to be even more bad a$$ now!! :hail:

Kandied91z 01-09-2003 11:16 PM

damn 91 that's with labor as well? not to bad...

i guess the intake is the biggest thing that will separate us then.

i hope it works out good for you. :)

90 Z28SS 01-10-2003 12:32 AM

Believe me .....if you have a shop with a hoist and have done it a few times , dropping the motor is the way to go . Faster too :)

Kandied91z 01-10-2003 01:21 AM

your crazy.......:lala:

You people may not beileve it but it is true. I did it to mine also.

Kandied91z-
Why did you have to take the TPI intake off to get the motor out? I've removed mine through the top before and never had any problems with clearance with the TPI still left on it. just curious, did you leave the hood on while pulling the motor?

Kyle

84Z28_5.7ltr_V8 01-22-2003 07:09 PM

i think you broke your brake discs

JPrevost 01-22-2003 09:02 PM

Well here is my opinion whether you like it or not. If it was just the tranny and motor, out the top and drop the tranny. Only reason to remove the k-member and drop the motor out the front is if you have a lot of time on your hands. There is one fundamental reason why NOT to drop the front, alignment. There, I said it, ouch. Another reason might be if you were replacing the k-member with aftermarket or doing a whole front end rebuild. The other reason NOT to drop the front is now you've got 2 huge parts that aren't mobilized. So now the car takes up room and can't be rolled AND the motor is pretty much waiting to have just 2 bolts undone for removal. Then what, you've got the k-member there too. Last time I checked the motor mount bolts were easy to get at.
In their defense since I do believe they have a good business, it just might be something they are more familiar with. I don't know about the tranny swap as I've never done it but maybe it has something to do with it.
If you own a good shop you'll always want the bays open. Having the car sit with no front wheels is a PITA although it could be construed as incentive to get it finished!

Kandied91z 01-22-2003 11:06 PM

here is my reasoning..........it can come out the top, it is easy, i can still move my car around when needed.

there is no reason i would ever drop the front end other than if i was replacing the front end........even still i didn't go that route.

do what you like as everyone has different ways, i agree that it's alot easier for someone to drop the whole front to protect paint and what not....but that's about it.

reason why i had to remove the tpi intake......well yes i left the hood on so this had to be done, that and this is all i had to pull it with. :)
