trans Am SCOOP in front fenders???

1 Attachment(s)
Hey i think im stupid and never realized this but, does this scoop that is on the front fenders come stock with the firebirds? is it only certain years? and only ws6? or only trans ams?? i like how it looks alot, was thinking of getting some fenders off one and putting them on my camaro when i get it painted...

so i assume they fit on a camaro as well beacuse fenders are the same right? would it be easy to just add the scoop? without getting a new fender? any info would be appreciated,

here is a pic of what im talkin about...

Can't replace the fender without the firebird nose too but I would say that the vent swap would not be that hard. Cut it out weld in to camaro fender and grind and bondo and paint. But thats also easier said than done.

the vents came on Trans Ams, 85-90

They also came on 82-84 TAs too, but only the TAs. Yould think that the GTA's would have got them to, but they didn't.

so a firebird fender wont go on a camaro? i thought they were the same thing

Kandied91z 03-02-2003 03:29 PM

look at it............if your camaro has that steep of a front end angle then you need to change the name... :D

mines alot more square..... ;)

chris400 03-02-2003 04:05 PM

if i remember correctly, those vents are plastic inserts.
my roommate had an 84 TA....
you should be able to cut a camaro fender and mount it the same way in the hole.

..one more....by the way....I installed these as "seamless" fender louvers....from factory in the TA's....they had a seam....for people that don't like body fillers or fiberglass....this isn't something for you...haha...I had to use..pop rivets...bondo, dura-glass, fiberglass, bondo hair, and glazing putty to install these. It was the only way to keep them from cracking.....

To install them , just cut a hole in the fender and pop them in.
There is a noticable slope in the firebirds fender if you look at a picture of a Camaro and Firebird in the same picture.
Camaro is almost flat and the Firebird slopes down a lot.
Also, there are two different kinds of vent inserts, the 82-84 and the 85-90. The earlier ones had lower ground effects so the vent used the entire insert, the later ones had higher ground effects so only part of the vent is used.
I'll show you a picture of both,

you dont have to cut a hole in the fender to take them out.. they are plastic and pop right out.. i had a trans am and i took them out to do the body work.. i knew they were fuctional but does anyone know what exactly they did?

MikeS 03-04-2003 02:32 PM

Another difference between the two fenders is the top edge. Firebirds have a sharper bend here, as opposed to the more rounded Camaro top fender edge.

They are for brake cooling I believe, but I don't think they are really funtional. As far as simply cutting a hole...its not that easy. On a TA they have a recess built in so the edge of the vent sits flush with the body. Without this lip it would either fall though or sit to high. So conceivably unless you are flushing it with the body like the above shots...(84customZ28, looks awesome by the way!)... you would need to weld a lip to the back side to support the vent. It can definately be done. Honestly, I don't know if it would be easier to simply cut and try to weld a sheet on the back for suport, or to cut that whole part of a TA fender and weld IT into the camaro fender. Just a thought! I have debated it for my car, but I did not like that it sat with a seem. Without a seem it looks awesome, so I may think about doing that!

i'm pretty sure they were functional. mine had a bunch of tubes running from them and leading into the carb near the intake manifold... i never had a chance to look into it more b/c i sold the car.

There is really nothing behind then since the inner fenderwell basically seals off the fender.
One thing that it is good for is routing the ECM harness into the car, makes it so much easier. :D
