18in rims...rear drums...your 2 cents

I'm trying to piece my car together before this summer. I have 18 in boyd coddington rims, timeless 5 to be exact. I have to spend a good amount of money to get my car going. It is a project I started years back and never finished. Long story short, I have lots to accomplish, more than I can afford by this spring. I will eventually get rear discs, when I get a new rear end. Here my dilemma, I don’t much like the look of the rear drums w/ the 18in rims. I was thinking of painting the drums a flat black, or getting dust covers. The flat black would draw the least attention I think. The only 18in dust covers I’ve seen are polished aluminum. I think they look kind of cool, but I’d like to see them behind my rims. Truth is I’d rather just have a “big brake” setup that everyone could see. That’s why I bought rims with large “openings”, so you could see the brake setup. Do you guys think the dust covers look cheap? You know the brakes behind the rims aren’t worth looking at. I’m not sure I want to even put on these rims, if the car is not the way I want it to look yet. I was thinking of a rear disc swap, but I’d rather spend the money towards a new rear end. I have 91 Z28 rims now and I like them a lot. I could just buy new tires for these and waiting until my car was complete to put on my 18in rims. Then again, what’s the point of having a bad *** set of rims if people don’t see them? That’s why I think I’m leaning towards dust covers. What do you guys think?

Well if you're not going to convert soon, I would just paint the drums the blackest black I could find.

I wouldn't paint them red or any other ridiculous color like that. I personally dont like the dust covers, it looks kind of odd behind some nice, big 18" wheels.

I would rather show off some small, stock brakes than some big plastic cover things.

I'm not a fan of dust covers either, but here are the rims I have only these are 20's. I don't think it looks too bad, but I have seriously thought about painting the drums black.

I just painted my drums black as not to draw attention. But this year I'm finally gonna get the LS1 rear brakes done so I'll have something to show off behind my Boyds.

I cant really even notice my drums with my 18's on...granted they arent as thin as yours but nonetheless, you're eventually going to swap for something bigger....dont hold off on putting the wheels on when you havethem sitting right there. People who know should tell it's a work in progress, and it's really only going to bother you, as most people probably wont take note of it.

....dust covers are a no-no

yep, NO dust covers. you got to have a certain car(or truck) to pull those things off. and that truck does look good. but yeah, it will bugg the hell out of you the most, no onelse will probably even notice the drums. i hate my rear drums, and one day i'm gonna do the conversion, but i haven't had ANYTHING but compliments on the car so don't sweat it.

i think with most people, they notice nice brakes, but dont notice anything if there arent nice brakes.

a buddy of mine knows someone w/ 2 brand new hankook tires, 275/40/18 he doesn't want. I'm probably gonna pick them up. I'll see in a couple weeks how the rear looks. I'm going with a NO on the dust covers.
