How do you guys haul your mountain bikes

I know this may sound a little weird, and im not sure where to even post this, but do any of you guys haul your mountain bikes on or in your car. Most of the time i would need to haul 2 of them, pics would be great.

I used to have a small receier hitch on my 91 for the purpose of hauling my MTB around. Just had to slide the Thule carrier into the receiver pin it in and away I went. I did remove the hitch since I have a P/U. If your interested I still have the hitch.

I dont know if I could bring myself to put a hitch on my car

Re: How do you guys haul your mountain bikes

That is why I removed it. It was the easiest and least chance of getting grease, dirt in the interior or scratching the car up with other types of carriers.

I always get a kick out of 007's set up for ski's, although I have a feeling it was pure hollywood as they'd probably be toast at highway speed (DEFINITELY would send a snowboard flying ha). Same shape as our cars though so you might be able to custom mount a roof rack on the hatch like this ->

Attachment 437520

just not sure how the hatch would handle the weight

your best bet would be to get a good used Subaru for dirty jobs

i just take everything out of the hatch, fold the seats down, and take off the front bike tire. it's a tight fit but it works. always use a drop cloth :)

I have a universal fit Euro rack by Rhode Gear that mounts on the hatch, it holds two bikes longitudinally. Bikes secure to the rack by the front forks and a strap for the rear wheel. Looks kind of like a roof rack, except it sits on the hatch. I paid about $50 for the rack on a closeout and have found out later it's been discontinued.

It looks suspiciously like this one, what I can see of it. I can still open and close the hatch with the bike(s) on it.

Al Hasse, got any pics of that rack with bikes on it?? I put up the bond pic almost jokingly ha. That's cool as hell they actually make (or made i guess) one!

Re: How do you guys haul your mountain bikes

I'll try to get one or two this weekend. :)

The only negative thing I can think of is that the rack can't be locked onto the car - I use a long cable and loop it around the latch before threading it through the bikes' frames.

Re: How do you guys haul your mountain bikes

just ann FYI that hitch is not real noicable with the draw bar out of it, and a hitch rack is nice for hauling that kind of stuff, its not the BIG 2" hitch you see on the back of vans and trucks its a rather small one, if your camaro is your only car it may be a worth it, plus you can pull a little trailer with the proper light hook ups and all, some guys get a small (4' X 4' or 4' X 8') trailer to take to the drag strip, have s set of drag slicks on it a tool box, cooler/grill..... maybe someone has a pic of one of the hitches on their car with the draw bar out of it.....just a thought, i may put one on mine IF it was my only car i owned, but thats what other cars are for:lmao:

Here you go, the weather broke enough for me to get out and put the rack on the car. The yellow lever on each side of the rack allows you to adjust the height of the rear wheel and the angle of the rack on the car.

Attachment 436663

I have it "hooked" under the front edge of the glass with a pair of foam cylinders with a solid core (Rhode Gear called them cylinder hooks).

Instead of resting the rack on the bumper like most would do, I use the front edge of the spoiler and hook the straps to the under side of the deck lid so I still have access inside the hatch.

Man that would be perfect, now just to find one. What wheels are those and what size are they.

Re: How do you guys haul your mountain bikes

that's awesome! i wonder if that would work with a firebird...with the different spoiler and all. i need to try to find one on ebay or something.

Re: How do you guys haul your mountain bikes

It's served me well through a couple of moves and holds both bikes pretty good. Only way for me to lock them up though is to loop a cable around the latch and thread the resof it through the bikes' frames.

Wheels are Mavic Maxtel 6,000 with Continental GP tires size 700 X 32C :D :lmao:

Oh... the car's wheels - MB Vintage 17X8 with Kumho Ecsta AST 245/45/17, just had them put on today

For those who want to look, the rack is made by Rhode Gear and the model is Euro Shuttle. I had to get the "cylinder hooks" separately.

Wow..I have never seen such a rack. That is kinda cool, but I would never want to haul my expensive bike outside of the car. I have nightmares of forgetting it's on top of the roof and then driving under a low hung ceiling...DOH!
Or, just having it fall off the back of the car. I'd rather have my babies inside the car with me!

Re: How do you guys haul your mountain bikes

yeah that would be nice to have a bike rack i was thinking of somehow getting a hitch or so but it would look kinda wack. im able to fit 2 bmx bikes in my car with the back seats down but cause of doing that i scrathed my tint so forget that idea and also its hard to get a regular bike rack cause i have the high rise spoiler.

Re: How do you guys haul your mountain bikes

I am not having any luck finding one of those anywhere, i wonder what other would be comparable, i guess most anything that is for a hatchback you could make work. I guess I am going to have to take a pic of my clunker bike and post it now, it is nowhere near as nice as either of yours.

i was surprised how easily i was able to fit my bike in the hatch. i just put down a drop cloth and took off the front tire and it fit right in.

here's a pic of my bike:

How do you like your ironhorse, i looked at them, but was afraid they would be too heavy. I would put just mine in the hatch, but most of the time it is 2 of us that go riding.

punkdude908 02-09-2009 11:33 AM

Re: How do you guys haul your mountain bikes

its awesome and worth every penny. it's a 2005 Iron Horse Warrior. i'd say its about average in terms of weight. almost everything on the bike has been upgraded (Fox Vanilla R fork, Hayes Nine hydraulic disc brakes, etc.). i paid $750 brand new. it's worth around $2500 with all the upgrades. i love Iron Horse and i'd like to get one of their downhill bikes- preferably a Sunday.

if i find a bike carrier that will work, i'll post pics.

Re: How do you guys haul your mountain bikes

I have a 'universal' bike carrier that works.. use it on my cavalier to move my norco drop around. it has movable straps to adjust to any trunk or hatch, and the bike hands sideways across the back of the car behind and parallel to the bumper. it can also hold two bikes.

Re: How do you guys haul your mountain bikes

I'd post a pic of my bike ... but it's dirty... yea thats it , it's dirty. And it's old... it's dirty and it's old. And it's pretty much worn out. It's dirty and it's old and it's worn out! And the seat is ripped.

Dammit!

But hey ... I don't worry about getting it dirty.
