Rear Side Markers 1 Attachment(s) Um, I'm kind of a newbie to the lighting on these cars, but what is the purpose of the two rear lights on the farthest corner of the tailights? theyr'e a 194 wedge bulb and they do nothing, as far as i know. Outlined in the picture. |
Re: Rear Side Markers They do exactly as the title says, they are markers, and required since 1970. Quoted from Wikipedia In North America, amber front and red rear sidemarker lamps and retro-reflectors are required. The law initially required lights or retroreflectors on vehicles made after 1 January 1968. This was amended to require lights and retroreflectors on vehicles made after 1 January 1970. These side-facing devices make the vehicle's presence, position and direction of travel clearly visible from oblique angles. The lights are wired so as to illuminate whenever the vehicles' parking and taillamps are on, including when the headlamps are being used. Front amber sidemarkers in North America may or may not be wired so as to flash in sync with the turn signals. Sidemarkers are permitted outside North America, but not required. If installed, they are required to be brighter and visible through a larger horizontal angle than US sidemarkers, they may not flash, and they must be amber at the front and rear unless the rear sidemarker is incorporated into the main rear lamp cluster, in which case it may be red or amber. |
Re: Rear Side Markers So they don't need to work therefore they don't? |
Re: Rear Side Markers I read it as if installed they are required to work. They are not required outside of Norht America. Canada is in North America, so make sure they light up. |
Re: Rear Side Markers If yours are not lighting up, then something is "broken". Blown bulbs? Broken wires? They get power from the tail lights, so if the tail lights light up, that suggests they are getting power & the 194 bulbs are blow (or not in there). |
Re: Rear Side Markers Well i just replaced the bulbs so its gotta be some busted wires somewhere. i'll have to pull it apart and see |
Re: Rear Side Markers Found the problem. Bulbs contacts were dirty. both sides work fine. |
Re: Rear Side Markers Always look to the e,asiest things first. Bulbs and dirty sockets are much easier than wire chasing. Put some Di-lithium grease in your light sockets. It will help keep the contact, and prevent the corrosin from coming back. |
Re: Rear Side Markers thanks, will do next time i pull the lights apart for an LED conversion |
