Wrap vs Paint????

Has anyone vinyl wrapped or had their car painted?

If so, did you wrap it your self or have someone do it?

What costs were involved, material and labor??? For both wrap and paint...

Getting ready to do mine, and the idea of wrapping is intriguing because if you don't like it or want to return to the factory color/paint you can just take it off.

Re: Wrap vs Paint????

The problem with the wrap is that it's only meant to be on for about 5 years.

Re: Wrap vs Paint????

from what i was able to find in my searches, a good quality wrap will set you back about $500 for materials if you DIY (add another $500 or so to have it applied professionally IIRC). cheap vinyls won't be as flexible, bad adhesive, and fade.

i was seriously debating this route for a while after seeing how it came out when done correctly.

Re: Wrap vs Paint????

The only thing I don't like about wraps is how they start to peel at the edges...and if you wash the car you might get bubbles. The vans at my work are wrapped and have both problems. But that's mostly because they are work vans.

Re: Wrap vs Paint????

Get it painted. ...I've wrapped several cars/vans etc. etc. and it pretty tricky if you don't know what you're doing. ...and "most" shops don't have people qualified to do an install to rival the look of paint. There's a BIG difference between wrapping billy bobs plumbing van, and wrapping a brand new lamborghini. ...and then it still doesn't last forever.

Re: Wrap vs Paint????

Can you wax or buff "wrap" or is it just a soap and water thing. Sounds tacky as he--.Get it? Tacky...
I watched it being done to a truck on TV once. Looked kinda cool with the American flag and such. Its not something Id do but to "each there own".

i just had my 2010 genesis coupe wrapped in gloss orange. i was going to paint it but they wanted like 8 grand so i got it wrapped for 2k n worth every penny, its very simple to do your self too but i didnt wanna deal with it so i just helped a little bit. they also have a special wax for it. i was looking for a older muscle car like my camaro recently to wrap it lime green but i happen to get a car with a custom paint job lol but heres my genesis

car went from this

That's a great looking Genesis! What are the specs? Man, don't mean to knock it, but it sure looked much nicer in red! Good news is that you can always just peel off the vinyl wrap!

Re: Wrap vs Paint????

I thought about doing a wrap in flat/satin/matte colors...either black or red on my car... just to see how it would look and if I didnt like it, i'd take it off. I'd have someone do it for sure, as I dont think i have the skill or patience to do it. The Genesis looks good! I'd like to see it close up tho...seen many cars that looked good in photos at 10 ft and in person the paint was junk.

Are the body sections 1 piece? I'd have no idea where to start trying to install stuff like that.

Why would you wrap a car? I guess I've been living under a rock since I've never heard of it.

That metallic blue wrap is nice!!!!!! I wana wrap my Formula now....lol. I think its easier since I dont have a bodykit like the birds or Gta's, I think wraping a 91-92 z28 might be hard with the vent holes in the bodykit. They arent squared, but I could be wrong.

very nice job. Love the color, but I also loved the red too. lol. So, any regrets so far with it? How has it held up against scratches / debris and such? Awesome car and great job.

Re: Wrap vs Paint????

IF a wrap is done right it can look good, but it will cost you. Over all I like paint alot better, but it's all in what you want. When I hear wrap I think of work vans and promo cars.

haps 06-11-2012 09:22 AM

Re: Wrap vs Paint????

Can't buff it, can't polish it, can't wax it, edges peel, visible seam lines, low reflectivity, 3 to 5 year max life expectancy, fades faster than paint, (I've seen paint under vinyl prematurely fail)et al. What's the upside? It's cheap!!

This route is just as good as Rustoleum and tractor paint.

im almost finished wrapping my 84 camaro, ill start a topic.

Its very time consuming and the sharp corners on our design is a real pain in the @ss.

Re: Wrap vs Paint????

I wonder if you could cover where the bumper meets the fender with wrap, and have it stay that way without cracking.

Abubaca 06-17-2012 02:40 PM

Re: Wrap vs Paint????

The wraps are cheaper, removable, and they allow some pretty crazy finishes, as well as unlimited design and customizablity. When they're installed properly, they look pretty darn good. ....for a short time. ...but they start to show their shortcomings relatively quickly. Different brands and finishes will of course vary, but after 6 months, you're gonna know it's a wrap. How long will depend on how you take care of the car, but as we like to say "it ain't paint". The exotic cars get away with it because they're driven so rarely. On a DD, it ain't gonna last. We do all sorts of promo/marketing/company wraps on vans and such, and the advertising message/logos/info/colors DOES last, but again, it's not trying to replicate the "finish" of paint.

Re: Wrap vs Paint????

im not driving my car often, and ill take good care of it.

Ill see what it looks like in a few years.

Will wrap just peel off after several years?
