October 2018 COTM **Winner**

Congratulations, 88IROCvertZ! After several trials, this very deserving member is our TGO Car of the Month winner.
If this were a political campaign, I could see 88IROCvertZ's Camaro running on a "most qualified" platform.
First of all, a convertible IROC is a none-too-common, great-looking, and desirable car. Add to that, flame red paint is one of those great colors unique to Third Gens and is for sure one of the very top color options to have. That's just the car's pedigree. Then there's this car's merit...
Thank you, 88IROCvertZ for all the outstanding COTM presentations. The car is stunning from every angle and meticulous in every detail. Also, thank you for having some photo albums, providing more material to admire your car - it certainly makes my job easier. Clearly you have an unhealthy obsession with your Third Gen, and that's a beautiful thing.

This is my third, Third Gen. I’ve only owned cars with Chevy V8s in my life and only Camaros, Tahoes and one Corvette.

This car took me about 4 years to find. I decided I wanted to find an IROC again and see what was out there. After a decade of not owning one and working a side job to save up some money, I decided I wanted a convertible. My drag racing days were over, my driving record was clean as a whistle, and I always envied how awesome the convertibles looked. It had lines like an exotic and to me, one of the most beautiful cars of all time.

I searched every day for years all local sources for IROC convertibles and never had much luck. There was always something “off”. I didn’t want one with swapped out wheels, wood grain interior, and a grant steering wheel. I loved how these cars were brand new and that’s what I wanted.

I had to expand the search and consider buying sight unseen. The convertible I bought I had seen for sale on eBay years before I bought it and it was ridiculously over-priced for back then. I used to just look through the pictures and wished I could have it. As I saved more money I noticed the car didn’t sell and was listed again. Once again it didn’t sell. I messaged the owner and got some information about the car.

He was a police chief in Southern Illinois. He is retired now and had barely been using the car since his wife wasn’t too keen on driving with the top down these days. He stored it in a heated garage with his motor cycles and never got the car wet in two decades. No winter and no rain ever. He was the second owner and as far as he knew the first owner had it in storage with other cars and had only put a few thousand miles on it.

I got tons of videos and pictures of the car and even got a signed agreement on the condition of the car mechanically. I was told up and down the car needed nothing and was meticulously maintained. I was told the front end had chips and spider cracks and he basically said for about $2000 in paint and PDR the car would be showroom condition.

I got $5000 off the original price of the car since I pulled the trigger in Winter and was able to make the argument that the asking price would be more for a low mile showroom car. We agreed it was a very good condition, low mile unrestored car but not showroom.

When the car showed up it looked better than I expected. Underneath was spotless and all it needed was an alignment. The car drives great, everything works (even cruise control!), and even 80 MPH on the highway is as smooth as my 2012 Tahoe. It doesn’t feel like a 30 year old car.

I had the car painted because it looked really good until the sun hit the front end. I decided I wanted this car to look good from 1 inch away. This wouldn’t be a 20 footer, 10 footer or “looks good in photos”. My goal for this car is to have every inch look brand new from up close in the sunlight.

The painter was an award winning restorer of Concourse and Show Quality Cars that I used to know when I was detailing high end cars in college. When I brought him the car he looked it over in all the door jams and lines and said, “This thing is mint and no rust anywhere, where did you find this?” I told him it didn’t need to be a $20k paint job.. I just want it to look factory original. He said, “You won’t be disappointed, I don’t just paint cars, I restore them..”

He saved all the original emblems that you can’t get anywhere and he left all the jams with the factory decals untouched. The paint matches so perfectly, you’d never know..

The car is all original, untouched and stock. The previous owner had some generic aftermarket exhaust I had changed to Magnaflow and I changed the tips to smaller ones that didn’t stick out as much. I am going back this fall to get factory style tail pipes back on.

Other than the exhaust, the tires had to be changed out and the previous owner had swapped out the radio and speakers with an Alpine system that had an iPod cable. He gave me the original speakers and radio in the Alpine boxes. The battery was also changed out to an Interstate, but that’s about it.

I get the comment, “It looks brand new”. All the time, so I guess I am achieving my goals with this car. I know I am very happy with it!

Thanks everyone! Not sure how I got the votes, but I’m thankful the car gets appreciated! I’ve been a hardcore thirdgen advocate for a long time and never saw these cars the way some people out there view them.

When people find out I have an IROC they make the m_llet jokes, etc.. and then when they see the car in person they quiet down. The car actually has a beautiful shape. It’s actually a little exotic. I try to let that speak for itself by keeping the car pristine. I want to change minds, turn heads and enjoy the car!

I do have an IROC obsession.. It started at before I could drive..

..and I hope I can get some more thirdgens as well

I would nominate any of the cars I was up against. (I still want to see the engine on the SLP!)

Cheers to all the Thirdgens on TGO!

Thanks to Linson for the writeup and every month perfectly encapsulating the cars! I always look forward to reading the winner post.

The attitude towards IROCs and all third gens has always surprised and sometimes angered me. Not that they weren't popular. But the whole "r**neck m***et" association was never based on any reality and I think really hurt the car's image and sales. I don't know when that started. There were some funny bits about that on late night TV (Michael McDonald on MadTV did a good sketch about that), but for some reason that image stuck. One thing that gets under my skin (one of many I guess) is when people tell the same joke over and over and over again. Even a good joke gets beat to death, and that happened long, long ago on the whole "m***et" thing with 3rd gens. When I hear or read someone making that reference, I know that their mind is free of any original thought and I think less of them.

When I bought my first 3rd gen new in 1990, popularity was already dropping and the r-neck references being made. I didn't care. I buy cars that I like and don't care what anyone else thinks. Ricers were becoming a thing at that time, and when someone would say something about my "r-neck car," I'd say that I'd rather be in a r-neck car than a car favored by a bunch of acne encrusted teenagers who think loud=fast.

Most people don't have a clue about cars. A whole lot of people couldn't even tell you what brands comprise GM. My first 3rd cost $17,700. It was the average price of a car at that time, but so many people who saw it assumed that I paid way more. It was a great looking car. How Fox body Mustangs outsold them is one of the great auto mysteries to me. (The main reason is the name "Mustang." Every person not really into cars but thinks they may want a sports car thinks "Mustang" first.) The early Fox Mustangs looked like what they were - rebodied Fairmonts. The later ones, to me, looked like suped-up Escorts. To me, they didn't compare well at all. Frumpy, boxy car next to a sleek, modern machine that looked fast (sometimes it was only looks) even standing still.

Enough rambling (seriously, this site filters r-neck and m***et????)

Somehow the cars ended up in the hands of people that didn’t make the classiest decisions and it did tarnish what the car set out to be. I think they were attracted to its “race” inspired roots unfortunately. A modern, European inspired stylish car ended up being remembered for the later owners that ran them into the ground. It became a non-original joke that got parroted.

Pff...Spader...

My sensory perception had always been that mu11et / redn3ck stereotyping was something that carried over from the Second Gens of the late '70s early '80s (which much more deserved the stereotype) and was just sort of artificially applied to Third Gens.

That did occur to me as well..

Spader did drive a T/A in that movie if I recall.. ha ha. Maybe I’m thinking of another movie..

side note: The Firebirds get super unfairly lumped into the stereotype based on “those” Camaro owners

The late model third gens with the dark red color look great. It makes me wonder what it was like when that car was bought new. I’m sure it didn’t last long on the dealer lot. Congrats!

Thanks!

The top two pics Linson put above were the original 30-year old paint which wasn’t bad.. I probably could have gotten away with just painting the nose and doing PDR on a couple dings.. I decided I wanted to go all out and make the car look flawless..

With the new paint and decals people always ask what year it is and say, “wow it looks brand new!” A lot of people think it’s from the 90s and can’t believe how old it is..

I do wonder what it was like with new car smell.. I never got to drive a brand new thirdgen so I’m chasing the dream
