4th Gen Interior/Exterior Compatibilty List

I think this would cut down the amount of repeat questions as well as being quick reference guide for the members.

Sticky...Try to keep on the subject and I'll leave it. Thanks.:D

88txiroc 01-29-2004 07:22 AM

Really no need for another sticky on this forum.

People just need to check the FAQ board. I will leave this thread up here for now, but it should be moved to the FAQ board once it has some answers.

Just to start -

4th gen seats are a direct bolt in. If you get power seats from the newer car, then just wire them up like you would any other power accessory...you may even have the stock power seat wiring under your carpet.

Consoles...do NOT get the 93-96 camaro console and expect it to fit right. It leaves a large gap between the radio pod and console and doesn't fit the look of the dash at all. The 93-96 Trans Am console has 1 cup holder and the 97 - 2002 console has 4. A word of warning - these consoles are NOT direct bolt ins as many will tell you. Expect to take a rotozip to it if you want to clearance things. You may also need to move your shifter over to align it with the console opening. I have never seen a completely flush fitting 4thgen console in a 3rdgen - and I've seen quite a few from these boards that look perfect in pictures but are not. Expect to do some work if you want it even remotely close.

Here are some comparison pictures of 3rd and 4th gen consoles.

The seats are a direct bolt in like 3.1EyeCandy said but the back seats are smaller and you will have a slight gap between the back of the rear seat and the plastic. Nothing to worry about but I thought I would mention it. Also with the ones I have the gap between the console and the front seats is a little biger also.

Zepher 01-29-2004 12:07 PM

4th gen steering wheels also bolt up with no problems.
Don't know about the airbags though, since my cars don't have them.

-4th gen dashes (with some modification and wire splicing) do a search

-rear ends (with 4th gen wheels)

-4th gen wheels (only if you use adaptors(do a search for vendors), but no need on the rear if your running a 4th gen rear end)

-seatbelts

-door panels (with some modification and cutting of panels) do a search

-rear coil springs (ive been told)

-drive shaft (most 4th gens had aluminum) Im not sure if the v6 ones will work??

-LS1 and LT1 (alot of extra work and parts but can be done) see engine swap forum.

-T5 to T56 trannys (extra stuff needed) do a search

Exactly what I had in mind!:D

JR86-TA 01-30-2004 11:21 AM

Also:

4th gen side mirrors with slight modification.

There are talks of the 4th gen plastic gas tank working... I am not sure if anyone has completed it or not, though.

MrDude_1 01-30-2004 11:33 AM

rather then mention everything and say do a search, for this thread to be effective, YOU should do the search, and after you sorth thru the 1000s of "how do i" threads that end with, "do a search" take thoes few good threads, and POST THE LINK HERE

then zepher or some mod can take all the answers create a new FAQ thread without this clutter and will have a 4thgen swap refrance thread.

I am attempting to install a 4thgen clothe interior i got for 300 bux, console, seats, and dash. I seen you have done this before zepher. My question is the guages are all elctronic while i have the original 700r4 from my 89 formula. mechanical tach and speedo. the 4 th gen is all one plug. is there a company that makes custom guages for this kind of fit.
By the way zpher your lt1 t/a is the most bitchin 3rd gen ive seen.

Only way to do it is to do it yourself, no custom plug in adaptor is out there, yet.

I personally have a 4th Gen gas tank in my car, so yes it can be done......

omnipotentgoku 02-05-2004 04:15 PM

4th gen 97 manual console to B&M megashifter = disaster waiting to happen ( I cracked my console, its basically too big).. it may be possible, but I add that to my list of 3rd gen failures.

This post was interesting... I actually want to do a lot of this to my car! :D I was concidering selling my car and just getting an '02 t/a ws6, but I think I'll hold out and maybe just mod the interior instead...

Charged350 03-01-2004 08:41 PM

how bout that 4th gen rear....

jcurrieirocz 03-10-2004 08:06 PM

yah i have the rear up there already....thing is its abit longer but perfect if your ganna run 4th gen wheels too.

heres more that will fit....

4th gen dash/console and guages fit and work with some moddding.

89firechicken 04-04-2004 03:50 AM

i found that the corvette mirrors that were on the c4's work and there heated as well

flyitlikustolit 04-15-2004 02:42 PM

the rear, panhard bar, LCA's, springs, and shocks all work. I did the swap, well worth it. you only need the wheels if you don't like the tires sticking out of the wheel well.

I think someone should clarify he only means the rear springs, rear shocks and rear LCA....not the front end stuff too.

flyitlikustolit 04-15-2004 10:37 PM

hmm.. good idea. what he said. I dunno about the front. methinks no.

omnipotentgoku 04-15-2004 10:50 PM

Somone post the part number or a link to the part needed for the dash conversion from analog to digital signal. I know that dakota digital makes it, just don't know the part number.

dieseldennis 04-15-2004 10:58 PM

Do all 4th gen fbodies have Aluminum driveshafts? If no, Which cars should I look at? What kind of difference will I notice if any?
I know that a post in here says they are swappable into my 87 Z28 but is it as simple as a regular ol' R&R, or is there a mod or two I need to do?

Thanks All

Dennis

dieseldennis 04-16-2004 11:25 AM

I just called my used parts guy and he has a couple driveshafts from a 94 and 95 model. But they come from a standard transmission car. Are they different sizes than a auto tranny one?

Dennis

E brake handle

Anyone know if the 4th gen ebrake hadle works? I think it is close at the very least but I was just wondering if the bolt hole lines upon the metal or not. Mine is getting a little cracked in the leather at this point. No sense spending money to get it recovered. What is a good price to pay for them also?

pasky 04-22-2004 02:27 PM

LS1 Aluminum driveshafts came in the 98-02 F-bodies, their the ideal swap, their 3" in diameter, weigh about 11 lbs and have a vibration dampener. Not all LS1 f-bodies had them, I think if the car was an auto and had gearing of 3.23 or higher, it had a aluminum driveshaft, any lower gearing on a auto ls1 vehicle was given a steel driveshaft. These are direct bolt ins for our vehicles unless your thirdgen has a th200c (or whatever the early automatic was) or the four speed saginaw.

It doesn't matter if the driveshaft came from a auto or standard, they are the same length. The v6 steel shafts in the fourth gens are also the same length and are direct bolt ins.

The aluminum driveshaft that came in the lt1 93-97 f-bodies was the 1le aluminum driveshaft, it was 2.5" (or 2.75?) in diameter, weighed a little more than the ls1 shaft and lacks the dampener. Still a good upgrade over the stock steel.

All driveshafts in the fourth gen f-bodies are direct bolt-ins no matter the engine or transmission unless of course you have a saginaw or th200c equipped thirdgen.

its 200r4, not th250.

Fixed and thanks, I always forget the name of that thing.

hey.. thats a good idea... :D

flyitlikustolit 04-22-2004 11:47 PM

wrong. it's TH200c. the 200r4 is a V-6 700r4 tranny. it would still yield the same shaft length as the 83-02 cars. 82 and early 83 saw the saginaw/muncie/th200c trannies.

pasky 04-22-2004 11:51 PM

Fixed.....again

flyitlikustolit 04-22-2004 11:56 PM

cool. sorry to be a pain, but it took me a while to figure out which one it was, too. wasn't until i popped open haynes, chilton, AND helms and saw that it's a th200c, not 200r4. 200r4's can be built stronger than a th400. CHP did an article on it.

pasky 04-23-2004 12:31 AM

Its cool man, I want it to be as accurate as possible, its annoying seeing the same questions over and over on these boards from the new junior members.

strokedtpi 04-26-2004 08:07 PM

I am wondering what years of both camaro and firebird had the black dashes and console compared to those with the grey dashes and console.....also what is the compatability of fourth gen seat belts in a third gen???

Thanks

7plagues 04-29-2004 07:57 PM

V6?

Will the ls1 driveshaft work with the v6? and is installing the 4thgen centerconsule hard?

omnipotentgoku 04-30-2004 09:15 AM

T56 swap ? I don't know if I should bring that up here or not. Im sure their is thread about this elsewhere.

omnipotentgoku 04-30-2004 09:19 AM

4th gen 6 speed console ( the one with 3 cup holders) + B&M ratchet shifter = NO

Mine cracked my console so bad that I have returned to stock..
Im not going to say that it cant work, I am just saing that the shifter is too big to work when shifting manually.

7plagues 04-30-2004 02:37 PM

Well my car is manual so wouldnt that change something? just wondering... i still have to find the consule too.:(

RednGold86Z 05-09-2004 01:24 PM

One quick note for Power 4th Gen Seats with inflatable Lumbar and inflatable Kidney Side Bolsters:
I just installed '00 Trans Am seats in my 89 GTA.
Already had most of the wiring and tubing. Had to cut the 89 wiring to steal the fuse and connector. Removed the '00 wiring connector. GTA's have a tube and 4 wires going from driver side to passenger side. '00 TA's need 6 wires and 2 tubes. Basically Orange with black stripe is +12V, Black is ground. Fuse the +12V. +12V and Ground come in on the driver side and is seperate from the 4 wires jumping side to side. The +12V (orange and black) has to go into the driver seat, and to the passenger seat. Ground (black) does too. Two more wires must be added that go directly from one side to the other. A vacuum tube must also be run (but it's not carrying vacuum - the inflating pump is under the passenger seat for both seats). Then just be sure to wire it so that the same color from one side is connected to the same color wire on the other. Then, splice in the tubes paying attention to the connector again keeping the same sides connected together.

Also, if you have a split folding rear and install a non split rear, there will be two posts sticking out of the middle hump that can be left there, but they are quite visable.

88IROCARMY 05-19-2004 11:45 AM

4th Gen Automatic Trans Shift Handles can be used on the 3rd Gen. I have a 4th Gen Firebird "Side -Button" that replaced my 3rd Gen Camaro "Top-Button".

4th Gen inside mirrors with the map lights can be used on 3rd Gen.

4th Gen radios (I think???)

67 Camaro 88 06-11-2004 09:05 AM

If anyone cares... the outer door handles fit like a champ. I just snatched some off of a v6 firebird in the junk yard yesterday and put them on my car. They don't have the indented block on the handle.. it's smooth. Looks much better IMO.

oh yea... and less miles/use on the handle = no wiggles. Handles are solid, no more rattling.

Hmmm i like the handle. Are they plastic?

67 Camaro 88 07-09-2004 07:55 PM

The handle I got (not sure if they are all the same) are 100% identical to thirdgens... just minus the rectangular indention (cosmetic). It's smooth.

Is the automatic console still the same deal with needing modification, and/or moving the shifter? I was thinking of swapping to either a 91-92 console, or the 4th gen.
