Gauge Overlays and Pics?

Whats the deal with Gauge overlays? Do they work well? Do they shine enough at night? Anything I shuold know about them.

I want to put in the overlays for my gauges and HVAC. Will I be able to see at night?

Anyone have pictures of overlays on at night (with stock bulbs, not leds). It would really help. Thanks a lot.

I made my own too. All you need is Adobe Photoshop and sum editing skills. then u print them out at the right size and double side tape them overtop of the stock gauges.

MetalliCamaroRS,

I really like the way those look, but im worried about nighttime visibility. How well can you see at night with those overlays? Can you see the needles? Let me know man. Thanks

MetalliCamaroRS 06-04-2004 10:52 PM

I can see them just fine at night, nice and bright. The pictures doesn't do them justice at all.

I colored the needles red with a Sharpie so I can see them in the day, and its not problem to see them at night either.

You make those, I used templates I found on the net, removed the km/h and tripometer and put in the IROC-Z logos. Then I just printed them on photo paper. If you'd like the templates, email me and I'll send them to you to use.

Hey thanks for the reply man. Well u convinced me.. im going to do it. I dunno about making them myself tho, not that computer literate. Thanks for the offer though. One more quick question... is it difficult to install, or can me and a freind do it in no time? I have yet to take the car apart since i just got it lol, so i dont know what I am up against. Thanks again.

Its not hard to do at all. Once you get the gauges out, all you need to do is pop off the needles and lay them on straight. You just gotta be careful taking off the needles.

How does light shine through photo paper? Do you have to cut every lil dash and hole out w/ an exacto knife or something? More details please. :D I fear I am confusing myself...

i got my overlays for my camaro here, and they are nice, well lit, and not a bad price. real easy to install

82-89 camaro gauges aren't backlit.. all the light is reflected to the face by the bezel... so for us, at least, it isn't a concern. Dunno how 85-89 Firebird gauges are.

What about the 90-92 Camaros?

craashmann 06-07-2004 10:33 PM

They are backlit... I put blue LED's in mine and when they shined thru the stock yellow lettering (what was GM thinking with yellow) It turned everything ugly green at night... I've taken them out since.

I got mine from deranged design (however you spell it) They have a site and they sell them on Ebay...$20 its a good quality vinyl sticker...Spent 30 mins installing, and that includes coloring the needles blue and everything!

i guess the one question i have about making your own overlays... and that is where do you get the image to edit your own? i dont think you guys just go willy nilly at it and guess where everything goes...

:hmmm:
