I'm making my own from Radioshack parts....

MrDude_1 04-22-2005 10:33 AM

Mooneyes has one i think...

the only really cool once that ive seen have been home made...

Nikole 04-22-2005 04:43 PM

I wanna say that Springfield Streetrods also has the digital shift indicators.

Kandied91z 04-22-2005 11:22 PM

thanks for the idea.

http://www.springfieldstreetrods.com/index1.htm

some nice things on there and reasonably priced.

anyone else?

Eats5.0's 04-23-2005 10:07 PM

Harlan used to make them, but I went to their site and it seems as if their store is closed. You may want to throw them an email and see if they'll do something special for ya, or if they have anything left.

Kandied91z 04-24-2005 04:13 PM

have a link?

zNucleaRz 04-24-2005 05:22 PM

That be great if you have a megashifter and want to convert to a 4th gen console. Gives me and idea :D .

How do you make your own can anybody post a link to someone who has done their own with pics??

Is it hard or what all is entailed?

I'd be interested in any 'how to' info on this as well. I like the digital readouts by dakota digital, but a little pricey.

LG4KNIGHT 04-25-2005 09:04 AM

I haven't started yet, but when I do I'll write everything down

devianb 04-25-2005 11:08 AM

It sure would be nice to have a shift indicator light that actually tells you what gear u are in instead of having to guess by looking at the location corresponding to the letters.

i should have known but wanted to be sure. i've only seen him make shift lights though. i'll have to talk to him then as i never knew he made shift indicators as well.

hmm...

Eats5.0's 04-27-2005 10:27 AM

Sorry Kandied, my bad, I misunderstood your question.

you mis-understood I'm building a regular one with digital letters, but it would be cool to have one like that, have the display on the dashbord, & cover over where the indicator's supposed to be....

remember how i said the only really cool one ive seen was homemade?

heh, well this one could do nicely.

since its controlled by a microcontroller i can program, it can say anything...

know that big black "box" on the side of the factory auto shifter? if we modified it slightly, it could tell my little "black box" what gear the car is in, and i could have the display show it...

just a idea..

Now that is more like what I am looking for, but just want it to only display 1 character, R for reverse, 1 for first, etc...

MrDude, if you built that, I'd be very interested in info on how you went about it.

Kandied91z 05-04-2005 11:11 AM

neat idea, assuming everything else was in line with the dash it would work well. i need it to be as simple as possible. i like it though... how much you think you have into it? market it.

well, that setup isnt ment as a shift indicator ( my car is a manual), but i was just thinking, its one of the things it could do....

im going to write up more about it after im done... lots of trial and error right now.. theres a teaser pic thread in the Body and Interior section though..

not counting my dremel dying, i have about $150 in parts in it... i didnt do it in a production manner... if i fininalized the design, and set it up for cheaper production, i could probly lower that to around $50-80 in parts... plus time and such... it would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $250 a display to be worth doing... cheap for what it is, but too pricy for most 90-92 camaro owners...
the cost would drop a more if i used a LCD screen instead of a vacuum fluorescent display, but the VFD looks alot better and works in even the brightest daylight.

Kandied91z 05-04-2005 01:08 PM

yes that would be a near impossible product for thirdgens then. custom hotrods though i think you would do well. interesting all the same.

:)

I've seen it done on a car with a small magnet glued to the shifter and a series of magnetic reed switches on a PCB mounted on the shifter. It would probably be simpler than trying to modify the park/neutral switch.

If I was more interested in such things, I'd be tempted to also screw pressure switches into all the ports in the valvebody, so that you could also see such fun things as what gear the transmission was actually in, whether it was in a forced downshift, whether the TCC was locked or not, etc.

What would be the coolest though would be to install it in an old Bel Aire and use a nixie tube for the display.

Eats5.0's 05-04-2005 04:00 PM

Nixie tube, now you're talking old school... Those were cool displays.

Apeiron 05-04-2005 04:24 PM

Yeah I always imagined doing a digital dash in a 50something car with nixie tubes... and the green "magic eye" tubes for the analog gauges.

KiLLJ0Y 05-04-2005 09:38 PM

shoot too expensive??? yeah right... where do i send the paypal too???
