sosomeone asked about doing a trans am bird in real fire...so i tried it tonight since i was awake. so this took two hours on a peice of lexan i had sitting around...is it doable... i think so but it will take some more practice to get it right. found some shapes i liked alot that made it still look like a ta bird but some sucked....overall it needs work but it could be done. need help with shaping the head so more practice will get that down. but it can be done so here it is the ugly fire chicken...let me know what ya think

firebirdjosh 07-12-2005 12:14 AM

Where in MA are you, I know some people that would probably kill for that on their car.

JeffW 07-12-2005 12:20 AM

im in westfield, which is other side of springfield from you.

next time i do one of these im gonna get a projector to get the shapes even side to side. and i have a shield for the head its just not here yet so ill defitanly try another in a few days as time permits...

83_Camaro_83 07-12-2005 01:41 AM

Jeff man you truly have a tallent for that:eek: amazing:thumbsup:

Difflock 07-12-2005 03:08 AM

Dude, your flames are getting better and better! However, having the entire chicken made from flames doesn't really do it for me. Would it work better if the bird itself was darker, more solid with the flames licking around the outside. I mean body and head solid with flames bleeding into the feathers?

Just my £0.02 Sterling.

Mark.

theSteve 07-12-2005 03:33 AM

this is meant to be constructive..

if the outside edges of the wings had more detail (more feathers or something) i could see it turning out really nicely.

alternately... i think it would be ultimately better if there were no hard edges at all and the flames simply conformed to the general shape of the bird. that'd get tricky around the areas of more detail (the head) -- but if you could pull it off, that'd be pretty mint.

i'm tremendously impressed by your seemingly natural talent for the "real-flames" effect, and couldn't even come close to producing the same results if i tried.

quite honestly i think the effect lends itself best to traditional flame-jobs.

Z28ricer 07-12-2005 03:38 AM

That is some very very nice work. I dont think if I had a bird i'd want it as a final product, but i'd definetly say what you just did would be close enough that if I was out to have someone do that i'd just wait for you to perfect it.

Good job

82firebird 07-12-2005 07:16 AM

Nice work! Keep it up! :)

soulbounder 07-12-2005 07:36 AM

Looks good but I agree with theSteve.

As you progress with your fire painting skill I'm sure you will pick up some diversity in the way you are painting the fire. The way the fire looks is not my personal fav. :p

Hot Shot GTA 07-12-2005 08:13 AM

Looks great, Can't wait to see some more. Only 2 hours to do? I thought it would take longer then that.

Diabolical 07-12-2005 11:31 AM

i think it would look better with rougher edges on the wings. regardless, the skill is amazing. do you do this for a living?

Faded 07-12-2005 11:56 AM

Looks like the cover of a Tool CD. :D

CaysE 07-12-2005 12:01 PM

Great idea, too loosely executed. Take some more time with it. It needs less of an edge around the bottom and outsides of the wings, more definition in the head, and better conformity to the shape of a real firechicken.

smokefan 07-12-2005 04:53 PM

jeff it looks awesome. i think that i would make the bird more of a solid color and have flamming wings like difflock said but looks really good...as soon as i get the pics i will send you them...

jeff

so your experience is only 1 car paint, and a month of airbrushing? wow, that's amazing.

smokefan 07-12-2005 08:07 PM

Talent jeff talent

FSTFBDY 07-12-2005 08:35 PM

absolutlly amazing.

You have a tallen most people would kill for.

Do you do cars/gfx etc on the side? Imports would go crazy for stuff like this. So would tons of hot rod guys. lowriders etc.

The skys the limit man.

KiLLJ0Y 07-12-2005 09:54 PM

 :idiot:  :banned:

ugly.. if you're going to paint that on the car.. might as well put some 13" daytons on, hydro's, and get yourself an Afro and Gold "teef"

Camaroguy18 07-12-2005 10:19 PM

wow, with the job you did with the candy, and now the real flame paint, you've got some good talent....I need to do a roadtrip so you can 'liven' up my car ;)

JeffW 07-12-2005 10:24 PM

thanks guys good and bad responces are great..only way to improve is with coments.. all in all i hate the bird but i think it could be done starting over with some diffrent approaches. ill try it again later in the week now that i got a few new free hand shields to help along they way. i have to finish the pick up im flaming for the end of the week so well see how time and the weather plays into it.

i do agree a more traditional eagle brown and white may look better over the flame as those colors would cover the flames.. maybe ill hack up one of those... i do have blues whites reds maybe ill do something like that.. well see i just have fune with it and shoot away.. my newer a/b will be here tomorrow and i can have some more fun. its not at a point that i would put it on a car......it would be driving a turd for sure.

thanks jeff

jeff

bnoon 07-13-2005 09:12 AM

I like everything about the bird but the head. I like that it lacks the hard edges around the wings/etc because it looks more like a ghost coming out of the flames.

I must get some time to try this myself!

urbanhunter44 07-13-2005 09:21 AM

Looks good jeff, it's coming along! it's a great idea, although I'd probably do it in blue on a black car :)

jimp2001 07-13-2005 09:34 AM

I don't like the bird, but your flames are awesome!

Heres what I'm thinking... When it comes time to paint my car, I want you to do it. how many colors do you need for the flames?

I dont know what color I'm going to paint my ride yet (HOK candy blue or HOK candy red)

I was thinking about laying down a dark met silver base, laying out met real flames in lighter colors like silver and white... then laying the candy mid coat over that... I really think the car would come out awesome like that, it would have a subtle flame effect inside the candy.

Let me know if you're up for it and I'll bring the car to you sanded filled and primed, ready to shoot.

Diabolical 07-13-2005 11:39 AM

i like how everyone volunteers jeff to do their cars :)

how did get started with airbrushing, did you just jump right into the real flames dvd, or did you already have experience with an airbrush before? do you know a good introductory video? i've been wanting to get into airbrushing, for rc cars, as well as real cars.

JeffW 07-13-2005 12:40 PM

hahha funny isn't it.. but thats all good... its a great compliment.

i just picked up a brush and the killerpaint dvd...and the madness began.

what was that tom cruise movie " Show me the money" was the catch phrase.

jeff:D

Diabolical 07-13-2005 01:50 PM

that's awesome. i'm gonna pick up more of a beginners airbrush video first, my first task is to paint my rc truck body. after that i might try some automotive on my brothers car. the blue flames on your car are going to look sick. since the first time i saw realistic flames, i always thought blue flames on a blue or black car would be awesome, especially after seeing that one someone posted in your other thread.

that would be ghost flames with only two colors not sure how they would look. may work, may just look like silver and white flames. i think it would loose the real fire affect. i currently use 4 solid colors and 3 candy colors.

WOW that's awesome! I wish you were in GA to do some of those tru flames on my car!

smokefan 07-13-2005 10:49 PM

jeff you should make a shadow of a bird and flames in the background.

spdukerph 07-14-2005 06:58 PM

those are unreal, keep up the good work

cant wait to see what you can do after 3 months practice....

JeffW 07-14-2005 08:11 PM

i wonder what a mnedium sized deacl over the flames would look like? or maybe a full sized with the outer cut off. may just look like a decal over flames

ill try again some time.

jeff

SydwayzTA 86 07-14-2005 10:56 PM

somthing like that would look awesome on the quater panel

i think it would look awesome if you had the inner part of the bird (circled in white) normal, then the outer wings/tail (circled in blue) painted in flames. i would have a hard outline like you did above, just have the flames rough, but following the general shape of the wings.

spearson 07-23-2005 12:25 AM

Jeff, I wish I had my camera on me last weekend. At the Car Craft Summer Nationals up here in St. Paul MN there was this late 70's trans am that had a really damn cool looking flamed bird like what you are trying to paint. I didn't even have a camera phone at my disposal.

JeffW 07-23-2005 09:12 PM

oh to bad would of loved to see it. give me a better idea of what i am doing... this is all play anyway.. i don;t even own a bird...

anyone have access to decals? sign shop or defective decals i could get my hands on? maybe cheap or free:D

jeff
