I just picked up this 86 Iroc last week and started on it Sunday. Here's my progress:

Luckily I have parts cars! Overall though I'm still very impressed with the overall condition of the car, especially considering it's an Ohio car. My 82 had more problem areas than this and it was from Tennessee. :)

I've got an '86 IROC too. I've got the engine out and am stripping it down for the body work to begin. I'm a little intimidated by all the wires though. I guess I'll get it all back together.

Carb or FI?

Are you keeping that 3rd brake light? I've been going back and forth on it. It's ugly as sin but was on the car.

Are you making it original?

How much did you pay for it? I paid $2500 but mine was super clean with just some surface rust.

I paid 650 with no engine or trans. I'm planning on putting in a 350 TPI with 700R. As of right now I'm planning to keep the exterior mostly original. I'll definately clean up a few areas: shaved antenna, possibly C6 corvette style handles. I might make my own "5 inch" style wing, possibly an SS hood, but I really haven't decided. The brake light on the hatch mostlikely will not remain.

I just want to have the car clean with some some subtle stuff. I've got my Firebird to be flashy in. :nod:

Despite there being no one following this thread, here's an update: lol

Fenders are off, front bumper is off, most of the major wiring has been removed. Next will be shaving of the firewall and some rust repair. Keep in mind that I've only been working on this car when time permits so maybe an hour a day. :)

Wow, you work fast! But why only a TPI engine? Why not go for an LT1 or LS1?

Coming along nicely! It would be nice if we could work on them more than an hour a day!

It is going to look very nice when put back together. What color are you going to paint it? What else are you planning for it? Keep the progress report up to date, we all love watching this.

definately has potential! So are ya gonna keep the sweet red interior! If you get a chance could you measure where the holes are for the rear 1/4 effects pieces where you got the rust? I need to finish installing mine but dont want to drill and not have things line up cuz the template I make is off.

I'd love to drop in an LS1, but I'm a college student and a struggling one at that! TPI will do just fine. :) The plans are not real set at this point. I'd like to get an SS hood and build my own "5 inch" spoiler. I think I'll paint it white, but at this point, nothing is set in stone.

College student at the university of akron? im going there. ive got an 86 Iroc also. not hitting it as hard as you but im fixing it up little by little. its also a very solid body for an ohio car. coincidentally i also had an 82 z28 that was starting to die from rust. floor rotted completely out. glad i ended up with this car.

looks like your doing good. do it once and do it right. it is better to have a TPI that is installed correctly then an LS1 with loose ends.

Wow, my firebird has that same problem where its all rotted out in the same exact spot. I dont know how to go about repairing though. What are you going to do?

Okay I'm jealous. I miss my 88, it had those style wheels....almost a twin to that car. I should have never listened to my wife about selling it. I am on a search to replace it.
1st photo is new in 1988, 2nd is how it was when I sold it......

Subscribed! After seeing your first firebird on how it turned out, I cant wait to see this camaro. Looks like a great project! When my bird is done, I am going to start on a flashy one.

I had that problem, just not quite as bad, I got away with grinding the rust off, then por-15 stuff. if mine was that bad I'd cut out the rust and weld in new sheet metal (exactly what Im doing to my doors right now :lol:)

82- looks like a great project, keep us updated.

Hey man great find i also have an 86 i roc but mine looks alot worse and i payed alot more but ive been working on it for 2 years now and almost done. GOOD LUCK IM SURE IT WILL COME OUT GREAT JUST STAY FOCUSED!!!

I'm watching this one too. I am in the same exact spot as you are with my '86 IROC. I'm also doing it about an hour at a time. I'm just about to pull out the K member clean up the engine bay.

When do you expect to be complete? (or complete enough. they are never really done)

yeah man, great progress! gotta love ohio weather. i got my 87 from the cinncy area, its got plenty of rust herself. just wish i wasn't working 14 hour days so i could at least pop the hood open once in a while!

keep it up, should look as nice as that bird in your sig in no time.

not to bad my 86 had abought the same and some rust in the floors i made patch panels and weld them in then fiberglass them and used rust enencapsulator from eastwood..

good project you have going there, i am thinking of picking up a 92 z28 project to work on. are you going to replace the interior?
