My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) I just picked up this 86 Iroc last week and started on it Sunday. Here's my progress: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...C/IMG_1049.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...C/IMG_1048.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...C/IMG_1051.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...C/IMG_1052.jpg The next day: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...C/IMG_1062.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...C/IMG_1070.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...C/IMG_1074.jpg Today: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...C/IMG_1094.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...C/IMG_1097.jpg |
Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) A few more from today. After removing the rear ground effects I found this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...C/IMG_1089.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...C/IMG_1090.jpg Luckily I have parts cars! Overall though I'm still very impressed with the overall condition of the car, especially considering it's an Ohio car. My 82 had more problem areas than this and it was from Tennessee. :) |
Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) I've got an '86 IROC too. I've got the engine out and am stripping it down for the body work to begin. I'm a little intimidated by all the wires though. I guess I'll get it all back together. Carb or FI? Are you keeping that 3rd brake light? I've been going back and forth on it. It's ugly as sin but was on the car. Are you making it original? How much did you pay for it? I paid $2500 but mine was super clean with just some surface rust. |
Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) Yeah what's the plan for this? |
Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) I paid 650 with no engine or trans. I'm planning on putting in a 350 TPI with 700R. As of right now I'm planning to keep the exterior mostly original. I'll definately clean up a few areas: shaved antenna, possibly C6 corvette style handles. I might make my own "5 inch" style wing, possibly an SS hood, but I really haven't decided. The brake light on the hatch mostlikely will not remain. I just want to have the car clean with some some subtle stuff. I've got my Firebird to be flashy in. ----------

Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) Despite there being no one following this thread, here's an update: lol Fenders are off, front bumper is off, most of the major wiring has been removed. Next will be shaving of the firewall and some rust repair. Keep in mind that I've only been working on this car when time permits so maybe an hour a day. :) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...C/IMG_1103.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...C/IMG_1104.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...C/IMG_1106.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...C/IMG_1141.jpg |
Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) Wow, you work fast! But why only a TPI engine? Why not go for an LT1 or LS1? |
Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) You wanna sell those wheels? |
Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) Coming along nicely! It would be nice if we could work on them more than an hour a day! It is going to look very nice when put back together. What color are you going to paint it? What else are you planning for it? Keep the progress report up to date, we all love watching this. |
Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) Looks very good, I'll definetly follow this one. Keep the pics coming and keep that TPI engine; you won't regret having the car stock appearing. |
Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) wish I had the time to do that with a car, good luck on the resto. |
Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) definately has potential! So are ya gonna keep the sweet red interior! If you get a chance could you measure where the holes are for the rear 1/4 effects pieces where you got the rust? I need to finish installing mine but dont want to drill and not have things line up cuz the template I make is off. |

Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) Awesome that you are that far along already... i can tell by your work ethic that this car is gonna be NICE... keep it up man, i'll be following this one |
Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) I'd love to drop in an LS1, but I'm a college student and a struggling one at that! TPI will do just fine. :) The plans are not real set at this point. I'd like to get an SS hood and build my own "5 inch" spoiler. I think I'll paint it white, but at this point, nothing is set in stone. Thanks for all the complements guys! :) |
Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) College student at the university of akron? im going there. ive got an 86 Iroc also. not hitting it as hard as you but im fixing it up little by little. its also a very solid body for an ohio car. coincidentally i also had an 82 z28 that was starting to die from rust. floor rotted completely out. glad i ended up with this car. |
Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) Making great progress! Just curious, what's your plans for those red door panels? |
Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) im following this one . shoulda stayed with a trans am though ac, i cant believe you jumped the fence to a maro . |
Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) wow that rust must have been a big surprise. Never fun pulling ground effects off. it's like playing the lotto. |
Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) looks like your doing good. do it once and do it right. it is better to have a TPI that is installed correctly then an LS1 with loose ends. |

Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) 2 Attachment(s) Okay I'm jealous. I miss my 88, it had those style wheels....almost a twin to that car. I should have never listened to my wife about selling it. I am on a search to replace it. 1st photo is new in 1988, 2nd is how it was when I sold it...... Randy |
Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) Subscribed! After seeing your first firebird on how it turned out, I cant wait to see this camaro. Looks like a great project! When my bird is done, I am going to start on a flashy one. |
Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) I also subscribed. I too just picked up an 86 Iroc. However, yours is in way way way better condition than mine is. |

Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) If you do anything like your bird, I'm sure it will look great. |
Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) I'm watching this one too. I am in the same exact spot as you are with my '86 IROC. I'm also doing it about an hour at a time. I'm just about to pull out the K member clean up the engine bay. When do you expect to be complete? (or complete enough. they are never really done) |
Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) yeah man, great progress! gotta love ohio weather. i got my 87 from the cinncy area, its got plenty of rust herself. just wish i wasn't working 14 hour days so i could at least pop the hood open once in a while! keep it up, should look as nice as that bird in your sig in no time. |
Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) not to bad my 86 had abought the same and some rust in the floors i made patch panels and weld them in then fiberglass them and used rust enencapsulator from eastwood.. |
Re: My new 86 Iroc Project: Progress begins! (no 56k) good project you have going there, i am thinking of picking up a 92 z28 project to work on. are you going to replace the interior? |
