ISO: JC Whitney Red Kight Rider Scanner Light

I installed one of these on my 1983 IROC Clone (since I couldn't afford a true Iroc) I had when I was 17. I actually custom fit in into the front bumper cover just under the hood where it should be. I mounted the control box under the center vents inside. It was very cool.

I have since purchased my 1988 Iroc (23 years later) and fixing it (custom paint and all) up like my old car to include the light. Research tells me JC Whitney quite selling them in 2009. I know a few companies are making them now to be actual Knight Rider parts but they are expensive.

Anyone have one they bought and didn't use by chance and willing to sell it?

Thanks!

I don't know if any of the web sites are out there anymore, but when I had my 84 T/A I was converting to KITT. I used the J.C. Whitney control box and built my own light bar with build diagrams I found from Knight Rider build forums. It probably cost me about $100 to build it back in 2006. I no longer have the car and sold that with it. If you go that route and do not have any luck finding anything for diagrams. PM me and I can see if I have anything. I'd have to do some serious looking through paperwork. Otherwise I think the expensive ones are all there are. Maybe look on Ebay?

Attachment 278132If you need ANY help building the scanner ...let me know

You CAN still find the JC Whitney lights on Ebay now and then, and all you need is the Controller part...NOT the lights

The rest of the scanner housing you can construct yourself from Home Depot
You will need 8 relays and your halogen bulbs

Total cost after you find the controller?

$32 for the 8 relays
$48 for the 8 12 volt 50 watt halogens
$15 for the aluminum metal channel for scanner housing
$3 for the sheet metal for the dividers between the bulbs

The whole project can be completed in a weekend

Not the same thing. If anything those are more like the Knight Rider 2008 style, but nothing like the original Knight Rider scanner.

The original scanner light used 8 of the 50 watt halogen bulbs in a segmented scanner bar as you will see above.

The trailing effect was simply the fading of each bulb , one after another.

Much like a "Chaser sequence " on a light board.

One bulb fires, then the next, and so on.

Each one illuminated for a split second and fading off

This was my first light bar Attachment 278188

Notice the huge 1156 brake light bulbs?

Not very bright at only 35 watts, but great in 1982...back when nobody else knew how NBC made it looks so cool on television

I know what Knight Rider is. It was one of my favorite shows. There are lots of these now that are way brighter.

I was looking into them for a while. Oracle makes a nice one, but they charge a bit. I can understand wanting the one that looked really close, but I would want to get an RGB one that I can change if I get bored!
