changing hatch glass??
 

i have a1986 iroc with the big third brake light. iam wanting either buy another hatch or switch glass from another year. whats all involved in switching glass? i found another glass from a 88 for $40 bucks. i hate the big 86 third brake light. is it a big job to change?

No, not at all, but it usually requires a couple of people. The struts should be extended all the way when you disconnect them so they don't pop out, there is a lot of force involved when they are not fully extended.
If you have a large and sturdy box you can set it inside so the hatch can rest on top so it's level while you disconnect the four hinge bolts at the top. It is a lot easier that way imo. Then just lift the one out (two people) and place the other on the box and reconnect everything. It's also safer when removing the struts.
If you are also replacing the deck lid then that is a bit more involved because of the sealant and alignment issues.

Keep in mind these are relatively heavy (30-40lbs?) so be exceptionally careful not to get your arm, head etc. under the hatch after the struts are removed. The leverage/force can be quite substantial.

I would keep the old one around if you have room in case your new one gets broken.

Be very very careful to not twist or flex the glass, because they will break, and it sounds like a shotgun going off next to your head.

If you're replacing the decklid with the glass then it should go a little easier though.
