Paint the foam spoiler... Worth it?
 

Hey guys, I have been trying to ignore the fact that my paint has been chipping off my spoiler for the past... 7 years :o... It's shameful, but I cannot tolerate it any longer.

There is lot's of great info out there on spoilers... Perhaps too much... While I have learned a lot reading stuff already out there, I need to point my question a bit more.

My spoiler itself is not cracked, from what I can tell. There are no parts breaking apart, I think it is in rather "good" shape. It's just that when I purchased the car originally, the guy I bought it from said it was his second time painting the spoiler and the paint keeps cracking and peeling and the only fix it was to go fiberglass. The variables I don't know: Did he actually pain it recently? If he did, did he do a good job?

My question is; if the foam itself is in good shape, and the spoiler is prepped and painted properly, will the paint last for years to come? Or am I going to spend $200 on paint, and immediately next summer have to paint it again? Is everyone under a consensus that the stock foam rubber spoiler just sucks?

You can get it painted, but the painter needs to use flex agent in the paint to allow it to flex without cracking.

I don't know how the painter would get the paint to stick to the rubber, I doubt it would look good for more than a year.

What are you guys talking about? What is made of foam (besides the seats) on these cars? Are you talking about the spoiler on the bottom of the front bumper or the spoiler on the trunk? Or the airdam under the radiator?

You don't answer a question by stating the question as the answer. Are you referring to the short air dam strip attached to the spoiler on the front? If so even using flex additive in paint is a waste of time. Flex additive is only supposed to last a short time- enough time to reasonably reattach (or sell and ship) the piece without fear of it flexing then cracking. You could use a paint for vinyl that is designed to flex but the best thing to try would be to take off all the old paint and use plasti dip. However, no matter what if you scrape the piece on a concrete surface it will take any coating off.

Sorry for causing discord within the ranks here.

To me the ridiculously heavy spoiler, which sits on top of the hatch, is made of foam rubber with some sort of metal structure within it. I just see the one gigantic foam rubber piece; I don't see any dam pieces, or other small entities other than the 3rd tail light.

My nice shiny red paint is slowly (for the last 7 years) chipping off that said spoiler.

Anyway, it looks like I found a crack in the rubber at the base of the thing, with some rust visible inside the crack. So even though it looks to be in good shape, even if I repair that section the rust would likely continute rotting the thing from the inside out. I might be SOL and have to spring for the fiberglass one at this point... Dang, I was hoping to get out of spending that money. :mad:
