what to do with a 92 trans am fascia and gfx

So im picking up a super clean 92 trans am, im not solely a trans am guy in the first place but i dislike the bumpers and ground effects of that year specifically, now there used to be a guy that clip swapped to the older GTA style and ran camaro ground effects, i cant seem to find it any longer, or has anyone seen anything better? id like the older style, trading would be nice if someone was game since the fascias are pristine. Otherwise what does a complete ground effects, bumpers setup go for for a 92 bird?

Leave em alone and buy what you really want?

I get it, the 91-92 Firebird GFX are an acquired taste, borderline goofy and stupid looking... However they're one of the few things that makes those cars unique. Embrace the style. A 92 T/A in good shape is a lot more unusual than a 92 Frankenbird with a horked body kit.

PS, They'll grow on you, give em a chance. :P

Im picking it up to help out a friend mostly and getting a smoking deal on it, i just prefer the earlier style. i figured since itll probably need paint sooner than later mod it to my style? as frankenbird as it may be? you might be right maybe itll grow on me or ill be too lazy to do anything to it.

if i do ever rip it all off theres no difference in fenders correct? just fascias and bumpers?

or maybe what your getting at is sell it for the bird i desire? which is michigan is probably a tough job, luckily this one never saw a winter

I'm just going to take an educated guess that the brackets are probably completely different for the side pieces. Holes possibly won't line up. Might have to cut off some of the brackets and weld the others on. Bumper covers are different. Headlight assemblies are different. Turn signals. The plastic egg crate under the bumper covers are probably different too.

It's an awful lot of work just to make the car something it's not. Kind of like taking the wing and front bumper off a Superbird because it looks goofy. :2cents:

If you don't do it with all trans am pieces it will look stupid, trashy or hillbilly or all 3.

I'm on the side of leave it alone. If you don't like the car as-is don't screw it up. There's so few left and you're out to ruin the integrity of one.

The 91-92 GFX always bothered me. I've owned 2 and always preferred the Formula look or the 90- look. Now I've learned to love the 91-92 GFX and prefer it to the early TA.

Fenders aren't the same. Minimum 12 pieces to swap Not including differences in mounting or fenders.

fair enough, maybe hood swap and change wheels as im not a fan of crosslaces but ill keep them around, i found a few 91-92 birds i liked but they were lowered alot, which im not opposed to, i think ill just do a minimal build on it to keep me entertained while driving but nothing outrageous and leave the body alone besides paint at some point.

Re: what to do with a 92 trans am fascia and gfx

so i bought the car, super clean, rust free, paint has seen better days, the front fascia indeed has been slammed into the trailer hitch though, its gouged and the brace underneath is bent slightly, so options are find a new fascia/support or 85-89 fascia? would it even line up with the fender gfx up front?

Headlights, brackets, fog lights, turn signals brackets, front quarter ground effects. There may even be more (bracing/bumper support/airdaam) that I don't know as again I would never do this swap.

I'll see if I can find the correct fascia and address what's underneath after. In the time being I have some minimal engine building and tuning to do

the 91-92 are my favorite. I love the nose and ground effects on them. they are very unique and since its a 2 year only style I don't see many.

its grown on me since, the car has been a PITA though, i do need to find somewhere i can get that will match paint, everywhere locally has done a subpar job and i need a few gfx replacements and a foglight

That's the funniest thing I've read on these boards in twenty years. Awesome!

Re: what to do with a 92 trans am fascia and gfx

true story. I remember looking at it and thinking it was cool but that's it. the next day I got an email from ebay saying I won it. I called the guy and explained I had no memory of bidding and would he please repost it. he was nice about it but frustrated, he said I was the third winner who had backed out and that he he didn't understand why because it was a great running car cheap. while we were on the phone he took a video of him raising the hood and starting the car. it fired right up and ran smooth. so I said ya know what..i will take it. then I asked where it was located and of course it was in FLORIDA! it couldn't have been any further away. it took about 2 months to get it shipped but the guy was cool about it sitting in his driveway. when I finally got it I was pretty stoked. it ran great! the ac was cold. the paint is burnt from the florida sun but it was in decent shape other wise. I'm pretty happy with it over all. I wasn't going to do anything to it but drive it but the more you like a vehicle the more you want to make it nice.

Re: what to do with a 92 trans am fascia and gfx

Obviously the front and rear bumper covers are different, as are the bumpers underneath. The fenders are the same, but have vents in them, so you don't have to change them if you don't want. The black support piece the holds the rear edge of the front bumper cover up is different, as are headlights. The side GFX are all different and the holes for the door GFX are in different places. The side GFX supports are different and are welded on for the 91-92, where as the earlier ones are screwed on, but there may be a bracket welded down the rocker.
I would be a lot easier to just find an earlier car, or just delete the GFX and make it a "Formula"
