my drum-to-disc upgrade - with photos - the 12" C4HD kit from Ed Miller Here is a brief run down (with photos) of my drum-to-disc brake upgrade project. Car came stock with drum brakes, and up front were the 10" discs. The fronts were upgraded in 2007 with a custom C4HD kit built by Ed Miller onto some 2" drop-spindles I had. the front setup is a PBR caliper with DS 13" rotors and braded lines, etc. the new rear setup (photos below) is a 12" DS rotor, same PBR caliper, braided flex lines, parking brake modification, etc.. also built by Ed. He does great work and everything was spot on. Thanks Ed. it came with a proper disc/disc Proportioning valve too . wheel bearings, seals, diff fluid, parking brake cables https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a...man15/0343.jpg i also bought a long main brake line for under the car (from in-line tube) https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a...man15/0063.jpg it came with a proper disc/disc Proportioning valve too . i was just about to install it here. its pictured in the first photo https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a...man15/0153.jpg here are the old nasty drum brakes: https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a...man15/0462.jpg and they were removed ( the rest of the parts were already tossed away when i took this photo) https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a...man15/0602.jpg axles out https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a...man15/0445.jpg as you can tell from the photos, thea rear axle housing was pretty nasty. i took a few wire wheels on my electric drill and ground that sucker down to get all the grease, grime, and flash rust off of it. https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a...man15/0422.jpg only after pulling out the axle bearings and seals (which were really in there!) then hit it with some metal primer. yes brown i know, but its good primer https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a...man15/0742.jpg brown. ugh. but not for long... and then painted it satin black https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a...man15/0922.jpg new brackets to hold calipers now mounted onto axle https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a...man15/0942.jpg just a pic i liked https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a...man15/0402.jpg so, unfortunately I DO have the project completed, but my phone isnt communicating with my computer all of a sudden and the rest of my photos with rotors, calipers, brake lines etc are all on my phone.. im going to look into repairing this tomorrow and then i will finish this all up. just wanted to share stay tuned for the next round of photos when i get them to load up to the computer |
Re: my drum-to-disc upgrade - with photos - the 12" C4HD kit from Ed Miller Looks really good, just about how mine looked when I did the LT1 rear disc swap on my '86. Only difference is I used everything off a LT1 disc car and had to do some minor grinding and drilling. Cant wait to see the rest of the pics. Curious question though, how long did it take to get your rear kit in from Ed ? Word is he's swamped at the moment and cant keep up with orders. I'm looking to get some front brackets and hubs here soon. |
Re: my drum-to-disc upgrade - with photos - the 12" C4HD kit from Ed Miller Very nice my friend.. Every F body should be sporting big brakes! |
Re: my drum-to-disc upgrade - with photos - the 12" C4HD kit from Ed Miller I'm considering a swap like this. I can't wait to see the rest of the photos. Looks good so far. |
Re: my drum-to-disc upgrade - with photos - the 12" C4HD kit from Ed Miller was finally able to get the photos uploaded of the rest of the install https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a...Zman15/009.jpg https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a...Zman15/010.jpg https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a...Zman15/012.jpg https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a...Zman15/013.jpg https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a...Zman15/014.jpg https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a...Zman15/017.jpg all in all a great upgrade. the kit had everything i needed except some ertra red loc-tite all that is left is to bed the pads and season the rotors after another 100 or so miles of light use with the brakes. from everything i've read about this process. i am supposed to drive "normally" for a few hundred miles, then commence doing the heavy stops and such to bed/season the system. is this right . makes sense to me. the only issue i seem to be having is that i hear a slight scuff as the rotor turns along the pads. its not constant, but speeds up as i accelerate, leading me to think that its an issue with the rotor.. or maybe i have the parking brake cable tension just a little bit too tight. im hoping that is it. even after driving about 30 miles with the scuff happening, i can touch the rotor and caliper and feel almost little to no heat coming from it. so i know its not really scraping heavily as im driving along (not using brake pedal is when i hear the scuff). conusing, but i'll figure it out. any ideas? |
Re: my drum-to-disc upgrade - with photos - the 12" C4HD kit from Ed Miller Seeing as your from NJ, whose Ed Miller? That looks like a really nice setup. And if you don't mind me asking how much did it cost? Last time I had my car in the shop, my guy said I couldn't use my stock rear end if I wanted discs.... Is this true? |
Re: my drum-to-disc upgrade - with photos - the 12" C4HD kit from Ed Miller IrocZman it Looks great, check your ebrake tension. The ebrake should click at least 3 or 4 times before it gets tight. Ghost91 what ever shop told you that you cant do a drum to disc conversion is full of crap. I've done it twice, and the pics in this post prove it can be done. |
Re: my drum-to-disc upgrade - with photos - the 12" C4HD kit from Ed Miller My mechanic just hates working on my car, so it doesn't surprise me he lied to me. Jerk. I've seen a lot of proof anyway you don't need a new rear, but something told me to ask anyway. Thanks for clearing it up. |
Re: my drum-to-disc upgrade - with photos - the 12" C4HD kit from Ed Miller Not a problem, always happy to help a fellow Camaro owner. Btw Ed Miller makes full bolt on conversion kits for our cars to swap from rear drums to rear disc. Check out Ed's site www.Flynbye.com be warned he is back logged and swapped with orders at the moment, but it will give you and idea whats availabe. |
Re: my drum-to-disc upgrade - with photos - the 12" C4HD kit from Ed Miller Thanks a lot for that. Definitely looking into it in the future. Looks like nice stuff and easy to install from this threat. :) |
Re: my drum-to-disc upgrade - with photos - the 12" C4HD kit from Ed Miller thanks guys. im very happy with the quality of the kit and the actual install. Ed Miller (username ebmiller88 on here) has a company called fly-n-bye which Intimid8r mentioned above. he builds all sorts of brake kits for fbodys and corvettes . i actually ordered this whole kit from him in march of 2012 a year ago. however my apartment where I lived at the time had a narrow garage... too tight to work on this kind of project. after buying a house this past fall, setting up the garage, and otehr house projects.. i finally worked in some time to work on the car. intimid8r is correct in saying that Ed is very busy. for a few years now I think hes been swamped with orders from people wanting big-brake upgrades and also his normal life/work. check out his website for specific pricing and various different setups. mine cost $925 including powedercoating, rear gear fluid, and everythign pictured above. then i got the long brake line seperatley and that was about $70 plus shipping. i havent had time to check the e-brake cable just yet.. but i plan on backing it off a little bit. hopefully it will make the scuffing go away. |
Re: my drum-to-disc upgrade - with photos - the 12" C4HD kit from Ed Miller On the overall, how much did that whole set up cost???? |
Re: my drum-to-disc upgrade - with photos - the 12" C4HD kit from Ed Miller just around $1000 total. |
Re: my drum-to-disc upgrade - with photos - the 12" C4HD kit from Ed Miller drove the car a bit more after backing off the parking brake cable tension a bit, and the scuff is still there... it is not what i would call "rubbing" but its like just "shaving" the pad ever so slightly. anyone have any ideas? |
Re: my drum-to-disc upgrade - with photos - the 12" C4HD kit from Ed Miller Perfect timing I just bought a posi disk rear end but have no idea where to buy a proportioning valve from for the swap where'd you get yours from? |
Re: my drum-to-disc upgrade - with photos - the 12" C4HD kit from Ed Miller Well you do have the drilled and slotted rotors, but so do I. My car is fairly loud so The only time I ever hear light scuffing is when I'm next to a retaining wall or something of the like. I would say maybe put the car up on jack stands with the front wheels chocked, and carefully run it up to speed with the rear wheels off using pass through lug nuts to secure the rotors to the axles and see if you can notice anything. Be very careful doing this. Two people mightbe a real good idea. |
Re: my drum-to-disc upgrade - with photos - the 12" C4HD kit from Ed Miller hey great thread. I was hoping to get on this upgrade at some point in the future as well. Only question is, when I bought a new brake booster a while back there were a few different options, one included a master cylinder and was 'only for use with models w rear drum brakes' which I have; so if say later I wanted to swap them for discs...this conversion kit should do the trick? I don't really know what the difference with these boosters/cylinders; it was a cardone part vs a a delco; cardone was the only one to include the cylinder; I got it as my mechanic convinced me the master cylinder may be leaking anyway ////it is the original 30 year old part so I did want to replace both pieces. sorry long winded,:blah: just wanted to know if the cylinder/booster make any difference later on when attempting to upgrade, if anyone knows. I'd rather not have to re-replace stuff. |
