Rear Axle Brake Lines
 

Ok so I've searched for 2 weeks and ordered 3 separate brake lines.... none fit :( I have a 1992 RS, 5.0 with auto transmission but Im not quite sure if it's the original rear end. I went over the entire rear end with a wire brush and found nothing stamped on it besides on the bottom. On the bottom is gm n 22522676 k13 and what looks like f (?) 30. I dont want to have to get a whole new rear end because of one freaking brake line but Im pulling my hair out on this one. It was missing the drivers side line to the drum so I have no idea what it even looks like :(. I'm open for any sugestions

Not much to it. Just a solid brake line from the hose fitting to the wheel cylinder, snaking around to prevent it getting crushed by suspension.

That's what I thought until I tried to order one. The first time they sent me was a 2nd gen >:( (not my fault) 2nd one they sent wasn't even close, Mine looks just like you pic but hell if I can find out which one to order.

Where are you located?

Trouble with repro parts is sometimes even the makers don't know what they fit. There are 9 & 10-bolt rear ends, drums, and two different types of rear discs, so there are a lot of varieties of brake lines. Make sure the part is listed for the right year, and drums, compare the photos, is the best you can do. If all else fails, get straight brake line from the local store, and bend the line to fit.

May have to make my own if I can find a place to buy some now. Maybe I'll hit a junkyard. If not.....its going down range for target practice. It's an hour drive to any civilization where I'm at here in NC :(

.....I'm doing the same thing right now. Just bought the hardline from Hawk's. Picked up the flex lines locally.

The one I have seen is like an old computer screen, where the digits are made from a series of dots to for letters and numbers. hard to find. you definitely need to get all of the rust out of the way. I'm thinking on right axle, but dont recall for certain.

I've disconnected anything in my way and I wire wheeled the entire axle. Theres no stamps anywhere except on the bottom. I did find an extra set of brake line in my shop.
although its not the right one... it is longer and I think I'm going to try to cut and flare it to fit. I just wish I had the tool to do it. Also in the meantime I'm still hunting the right part. I'll probably call Hawks this weekend. Thanks again for everyones help :D

The stamps are passenger side, toward front of car I think. they are dot matrix. very tiny dots. nothing that is going to jump out at you. they tell gear ratio. probably an area about the size of a dime/nickel. this is memory, I will try to remember to look later today. if you can find them, you may be able to correlate year of axle.

Theres nothing on my axle. It's shiny and smooth. It's cleaned off down to the bare metal :(. Leave it to me to have a problem like this or a one of a kind axle that dont exist anywhere else in the universe lol Only stamp is on the bottom of the pumpkin.

Just to confirm - that is a 10 bolt? What does your RPO say belongs there? If you're really adventurous, the gear ratio also inside. See if that matches your RPO. If all that matches up, you may have the correct diff. The parking brake setup look correct.

What Gear Ratio Do I Have?
Jerk the diff cover. The numbers are stamped on the ring and pinion. The RPO’s are usually found in the center console:
41 : 15 = 2.73 (RPO GU2)
41 : 14 = 2.93 (RPO GU3)
40 : 13 = 3.08 (RPO GU4)
42 : 13 = 3.23 (RPO GU5) / Approx. RPM’s at 70 mph--2133
41 : 12 = 3.42 (RPO GU6) / Approx. RPM’s at 70 mph--2255
41 : 11 = 3.73 (RPO GT4) / Approx. RPM’s at 70 mph--2463 (Note that 3.73's were only available 1983-86)

I haven't had any luck and pretty much gave up on IDing the rear end but I did find the cause of the problem. It appears that the wheel cylinder where the brake like screws in isn't threaded all the way down. Therefore when I attach the brake line it has some play to it and can move in and out a little. I happen to have another wheel cylinder thats old and it threads and locks in tight. The only problem is where the rubber outer seals dont lock on due to the cylinder not having the little lip like the other does. So now Im wondering if I can maybe use a small zip tie to hold them on temporarily until I cant find a new cylinder that will work. I ended up using a 2nd gen set of brake line and bending it to fit. So now whenever I have a chance and a day off work Im going to take the brake line with me and get the right cylinder thatll fit whatever I have here. :) I dont have the time to really take the rear end apart to further investigate the type it is. Id just like to get the car moved out of my hanger and into a garage without spraying brake fluid all over and having brakes is a must where I live. Theres 2 big hills between my hanger and garage and being able to stop would be nice lol

You cannot use the 2nd gen brake lines, the threads and flares are different. They do in fact kind of screw together because the threads are really really close, but the ones on your car are metric iso bubble flares and the 2nd gen uses old style inverted flare/double flare. The old wheel cylinder you have is probably made for Inverted flare which makes sense as to why it works. The one on the car might look to you like it's not threaded all the way because of how the nuts and metric bubble flares are designed.

I ordered a set from inline tube years back for a drum axle and they fit fine.

These days, I find it easier to just make the lines myself. It's not that hard really.

I just built my own lines for my car from scratch. Its very easy to do and I got everything from amazon. I bought an assortment kit of fittings lines and a flare tool.

Finally got the right line from Hawks..... thank you all for the help......I learned something about brake lines :D Now on to the next project.
