Lanzar 4x6 - how can I make them fit?
 

Car is an 88 IROC.


I bought a new Alpine CDA-9830R mp3 headunit andthe following speakers:

I know the speakers aren't the best brand but I only paid £60 all-in for the 4 speakers (new) which is less than half the retail price over here in the UK and they've got to be way better than the lightweight junk that came from the factory.


I fitted the Alpine no problem but when I tried to fit the 4x6s this evening the drivers side one is way too deep. Its mounting holes are about 1/2 inch above the steel plate. I didn't get around to trying the passenger side as I assumed that side was easier.

I've not tried fitting the 6x9's yet.


Anyone got a suggestion for how I can get those speakers to fit. I read the tech article on heating the heater box and bending it but I kow if I try that I'll damage it...

I've never had those kinds of problems mounting speakers in the dash of a Camaro. Firebirds are another story though. Since I would assume that you're running into the same problem that I typically find with firebirds, I would strongly suggest you find the car audio tech articles in the "Tech" section of this website. One of the articles I wrote gives step-by-step instructions for installing the 4x6s into a firebird dash. Your procedure will be pretty much the same thing.

Yeah I read the portion about heating up and bending the plastic with a 2x4.

I figured I'd mess that up though.

well, you have a speaker that's too deep to fit the hole. You have 3 choices. Make the hole bigger, make the speaker smaller, or mount the speaker on top of the dash pad.

I gave you option 1. Option 2 means buying different speakers, and option 3 is just a hatchet job in the making.

Hmm...

I had another look today and the magnet is hitting what looks like the top of the gauge cluster housing.

I tried an experiment and sat the speaker on some spacers and then tried putting the dash pad back on and it seems to fit (very tight though).

So I'm gonna make an oval spacer out of some MDF wood, screw the speaker ito that and that into the steel plate.

If it doesn\t work I'll take the speakers back to the store and ask for the shallow mount versions.
The problem with buying this stuff in the UK is that the stores don't know anything about what does and doesn't fit a Camaro as they were never sold over here...

Tried test fitting the 6x9s and they seem to fit (just!).

How big is the magnet on those things? I've installed Boston 746 plates. In addition to being the biggest magnet I've ever seen on a 4x6, it's also offset which makes things even worse. I had no clearance problems in my IROC... only in firebirds. Those lanzars must be some deep mofos!

From the pics in the link above I'd say about 4 inches as a complete guesstimate.

I'll measure them and take a pic of the problem.
