Good Brand of Speakers?

Hey All, I was wondering what would be the best speakers I can get for my firebird that dont need special housings and can use the old wiring..Thanks! Pics would be nice also!

Pioneers have always served me well. They're cheap, fit well, and sound pretty decent too. I'd recommend going a step up from the bottom end models though. Dont have any pics but you dont really see them installed anyhow.

It's always a matter of opinion. When you say "the best", everyone has their own opinion about that. Personally, as a former shop owner and installer, I prefer infnity, polk or MB Quart. Your openings are: 4x6 front and 6x9 rear. Good luck!

I have had Alpines, then Kickers in my RS.Both sets were priced right and installation, of course, was a snap.I wasn't impressed with either. When I get further along on my car, I'll probably step up to Polk or Infinity to see what the fuss is all about.

If you can find a brick and mortar that sells them, I would go with Morel. They are really nice, even their low end kicks the crap out of most speakers.

You've gotta have something jacked up there. Alpines are by far one of the best speakers I've been installing for their price range, even without an amp theyre great. And ive never had a set of kickers that didnt hit great, id check your amp out IMO

Polks suck royally. There is no other way to describe it i blew my money on them when Circuit City went under, wired them all up and i thought they were great...i was also dumping the delco speakers tho. Ive had them for a while now and my opinion on them is just garbage. The low bass notes have a horrible sound to them, the highs are really weak too. Ive got them behind a pioneer deck now and theyre still lame.

Im getting ready to put in some of the alpine type R's got a good price through work. Alpines are great in my opinion

And you can use all the old wiring for any speaker set, just cut the old connector and then crimp a connector on, make sure you wire them properly though, dont mix the pos and neg or youll throw them all out of phase easiest way to remember: Light wire in the front is positive, dark wire in the back is positive

polks need power, usually powering them form the hu leads to weak results, for hu power id go with infinitys

Re: Good Brand of Speakers?

Higher end speakers will produce sound that the others can't match, but they need to be set up correctly or they won't sound good or can even be damaged. I don't agree with claiming one brand is better than another, many companies produce quality products for a while and then put out cheaper units to bring in more profit.

An example of outside factors affecting speaker performance would be Bose. The speakers themselves aren't that great, it's the way the signal is processed (cross over) and the chamber it sits in makes the difference. Some speakers won't make any sound until they're contained in a box with some back pressure, that alone says a lot about the other factors that contribute to the sound produced.

If you want something durable that has good sound I'd recommend Pioneers. They can take abuse that sometimes damages higher end speakers.

If you are using a higher end head unit and amplifier putting out a quality signal then I would go with Polk, MB Quart or Infinity. You really need to go to a place that has everything set up to compare speakers against the same HU/Amp in the same setting to be able to hear the difference and many times it's simply a matter of taste and the type of music you're listening to that determines your choice of speakers. Once you hear a quality system you'll never forget it.

I have Alpine type S and I love them, I have them amped and they sound great. My buddy has pioneers that sound really good as well.

I'm sure there are better but Ive been running a Kenwood deck with Pioneer speakers side and rear sail panel and am more than satisfied.

Re: Good Brand of Speakers?

I've always had good luck with Infinity speakers. I just replaced my dash 4x6s; went from Polk to Memphis. The Memphis speakers seem to be brighter, but have less low (can't really call it bass) end.

Re: Good Brand of Speakers?

get the Pioneers they sound great and are pretty cheap too. For example at best buy the 6x9s are about $40+ cheaper than alpine. Right now I have some really old pioneers in the back and they are only 150 watts but they put out some serious sound! Cant wait untill I get the cash to buy some of the new Pioneers that put out 270 to 350 watts!

Re: Good Brand of Speakers?

+1 For pioneer speakers. I have never heard a set that sound bad. My father even has some pioneer house speakers from like 30 years ago that kick butt!

However I cannot vouch for their amps as I haven't used one yet.

I've had Memphis 6x9 and 4x6 for several years paired with a JL Audio 10" sub. Rocks to the max even with the T-Tops out.

Re: Good Brand of Speakers?

I am using either MA Audio or M Audio 4x6 and 6x9 speakers in my car.
They were probably $120 new for the set and I have had them in my car for 6 or 7 years now powered by my 14 year old Alpine V12 4 channel amp. they sound surprisingly well for cheap speakers.

Using an amp should increase the sound quality of pretty much any set of speakers.

My car is all kenwood Excelelon series. I dont use the dash speakers I use 6 1/2 mounted in custom kick panel enclosures as the front channel.

Re: Good Brand of Speakers?

I will say this: The dash location in our cars is the worst possible location there is. "on-axis" is the best way to mount speakers for proper imaging. This is not to say that proper imaging from an "off-axis" location is not possible. An example of "Off-axis" would be our dash locations where the speakers dont fire toward each other, and worse, fire into the windshield to be reflected back to the passengers! Unfortunately, I have yet to see a good looking set of kick panel pods and With the 1-LE/B4c package in my IROC, I cant get speakers to look good with the manual window crank!

Re: Good Brand of Speakers?

If you're gonna use the "stock wiring / head unit" you would be wasting $$$ on the "best" speakers... Take a CD or mp3 player with the music you listen to, go to a place that has speakers setup, and listen to different ones... your ears will tell you which you like best...

Re: Good Brand of Speakers?

Decided to try something new (cheaper) and went with Alpine Type S 6 x 9's. Not that impressed. Great highs but not that great bass. Had a set of Polk MM's in my 73 camaro and they kick the crap out of the alpines.... They are a bit deeper so not sure they will clear in the sail panels but if so.... You cant go wrong with them. With an amp people thought i had a sub in the truck :)

Depending on how far your going. If you plan to add an amp and/or head unit to the system then yes. But if your just going to put in new speakers leave the old wiring alone.

I think you need to figure out what you want and actually hear some speakers before buying.

If you just want to replace the factory speakers then I suggest you go with Pioneer ot JBL. I've had both and prefer the JBL as I find they sound smoother in the higher frequences.

If you want to build a system (deck, amp, sub, etc.) then start with a deck and go from there.

You also need to put together a budget and stick to it. Yes this is VERY important. :)

Basically just to touch up on what everyone else has said......if they say "made in China" DONT DO IT!

There were a set of some off brand 4x6 installed in my dash when I bought my car and the stock sound system made mince meat of them. Its pretty sad....they were branded "American Legacy":lmao:

Re: Good Brand of Speakers?

Now for head units... While owning my own shop I had the chance to try it all... After that, My choices:
Head units: Pioneer, though I dont really like the looks of the last few years models.
Amplifiers: Alpine or rockford fosgate
Speakers: Infinity
Subwoofers: JL audio or infinity
Signal processors: Audiocontrol
DSP: (UP front) Pioneer DEQ series.
Thats not to say I dont like other things, but these are my personal favorites.

As far as pioneer speakers go, I like them, but havent had good results putting a lot of power to them. They are good value for the money, especially their component systems.
