New Speaker layout - your advice to replace bose
 

Hi,


I have inherited an aftermarket stereo and a set of 4 (kick panel and deck lid) speakers that clearly won't work.


Is my best option (and that means easiest...) to :


1. Fit 4x6 speakers in the dash and
2. Buy the sail panel brackets and fit 6x9's in the sail panels

The kickpanel bose speakers will give you better sound, so if you don't have the wiring harness for the internal amps, you can just replace the speakers with 4" aftermarket infinity's or something. People have also fit 5 1/4" speakers in the housings wit a little effort and a dremel. As for the 4x6's in the dash, they'll have a harsher sound than the kick panels with the reflection off the windshield and soundstage will be poor.

The deck lid speakers are actually small subs, and if you want to install the lid into your car, can offer a pretty decent (albeit a little underpowered) low end sound in the back of the car. You can offset this somewhat by replacing the speakers with something newer and better quality and/or replacing the onboard amps as well. The hatch will actually amplify the sound somewhat due to its design either way.

The sail panels are more of a personal preference. 6x9's will offer bette rbase response, but are not particularly good at balancing the sound in the car due to their size and location. They would generally overpower the other speakers, even if tuned correctly. Conversely, if you don't install the trunk lid, you can actually install 8" subs in the sail panels for a total steal install, with the amp mounted in the spare tire compartment or glove box.

TL;DR if sound quality isn't important at all to you, your easiest option is to install the the dash speakers (or bose kickpanels if you don't have any) and put the 6x9's in the sails. If you go this route, i recommend getting good quality speakers at least to offset some of the poor location drawbacks.
