I have heard that there are multiple speakers that will not fit and the dash I'm trying to find a nice good quality speaker I can put in a dash

I put a pair of these in place of the factory stuff in my 84 .
Only paid 19. buxs back then.

For speakers you could always look here, have a friend with an '02 "bird and loves his, even over the Monsoon speakers that came with the car.

I wasn't going to post this, because I have a T/A, and the OP appears to have a Camaro. But I just have to ask...do those Kee audio speakers fit in the dash without modification? They have a pretty good sized magnet hanging off the back of them. Putting infinities in my T/A, I had to modify the driver side duct. You can see those changes beginning about here...

My replacements were not 4x6 ovals, which offset the magnet some. So maybe that makes a difference. Also wasn't sure if the duct was the same between Camaro and Firebird.

There is a bunch of space under the dash speakers so bottom depth wont be a prob.
My 3 1/2 in. JBLs fit fine.

hey everybody, i'm new to forum and just figuring out how to use it. i apologize if this is the wrong place to ask but i need some help from some audiophiles. I have an 82' berlinetta stock everything. my speakers are all blown. I have no interest in upgrading my stereo head unit, but i'd like to put in new speakers. I was hoping some of you could recommend some that are a reasonable price. I'm not into putting subs in my trunk or putting in an amp. I just want new speakers with good sound at high volume and strong bass. i'm by no means an audiophile so if yall could dumb it down for me and help me out it would be greatly appreciated. i'm trying to put some in asap i'm in canada and its just getting nice outside in the gta, i'm itching to put my car back on the road for the summer but i can't do it without my tunes it wouldn't feel right aha.

There is gobs of room in the Camaro dash. The Firebird is a different story. The stock Firebird dash hull is relieved above the cluster, and there's a relief in the driver's side vent duct for the FACTORY speaker. Aside from a stock style oval speaker, or an adapter plate with a 3" speaker to keep the magnet centered, it becomes a problem. The 4x6 plates I had in my 83 and 87 Camaros won't even begin to fit in a Firebird. Went with a single 3" with a centered adapter plate, which fit OK, in my beater 91 Firebird... Pretty much every set of nice 4x6s I've had wouldn't fit in a Firebird. If someone asked me, I'd probably say that if a person were putting aftermarket speakers in the dash of a Firebird, just plan to have to modify the dash or try a few different speakers to find one that fits. On a Camaro, the sky is the limit.

High volume clarity is a product of the head unit, amps, and quality speakers. So it's tough to give you a real clear suggestion since you want mutually exclusive attributes. The cheapest dumpster garbage from the local Walmart will probably be close to or better than the stock garbage was when it was new. Any name brand speakers will be higher quality. But if you're trying to push a decent speaker with a stock 1982 Delco head unit cranked all the way up, you're going to destroy the speaker with distortion if you have enough power to do so.

So what I'm getting at, is if you're going to use a stock head unit and cheap speakers, keep the volume under control and if your standards aren't very high you'll be ok. If you want clarity at high volume, strong bass, etc plan on spending a bit on quality components, a good head unit, and a couple of amps. It doesn't have to be expensive, the last few beaters I've had got subs, and amps, even the occasional set of speakers from the pawn shops. Shop around a bit, browse the stereo shops (if they still exist) look in the discount bins for closeouts, last years leftover products, display models. Avoid the slick talking salesmen, and stick to name brand stuff, not hard to throw something together that works well.

Thanks Drew. I changed the speaker in my '91 RS....back in '91. Just been too long to remember specifically how much room there was. I know I didn't have to modify the ducts on that Camaro like I did on my T/A.

So when, for example Crutchfield, says a certain 4x6 speaker will fit the dash of a Firebird, it actually won't because of the magnet? That sucks. I'm glad I saw this now because I was just about to order a pair today, so now I don't know what to get.

A std. 4x6 oval, with the speaker in the middle of the frame, might fit if the magnet is not HUGE.

If you go with a component speaker, like I did, mods to the duct on the driver side will likely be needed. I posted a link to the work I had to do to my car in post #4 above

I know retro sound makes a 4x6 with a small magnet that should fit Camaro and Firebird with no issues

The Pioneer TS-G460 should also fit with no issues on both Camaro and Firebird. I have these in my Camaro.

Crutchfield set me up with Kenwood KFC-4675C and it drops in the Firebird dash with no modifications. Nothing fancy and no fuss.

Cerwin vega HED 1426P series, squeezed it in on the driver side, pass fit great.Crap, but thats the only pic i could find.

Nothing that is doing full-range (20Hz to 20KHz) duty is going to sound good at all. Almost no point in sweating over better or worse. Those positions are great for tweeters. That's about it.

Driver's side = Houston, we have a potential problem.

Note here that the a/c duct is just sitting loose inside the dash. When the vent registers and the rest of the ducting is all assembled, there will be virtually no gap between the dash hull and the duct. When the cluster is installed, it sits just under the cutout in the dash hull. So, if the speaker's magnet is off-center, or much larger than stock, it won't fit in the hole on the driver's side.

There's no baffle. The sound is going to suck no matter what you cram in there.

Wow. That's like the Infinity's I put in, but there was NO WAY it was fitting on the driver side. Had to enlarge the duct open, and move it over, plus notch the cluster housing on the side of the speaker.

Probably a little more room in the camaro dr.side.My issue was height w/ the bracket, but i bent the front legs downward on the bracket to raise the mounting surface.This allowed the speaker to make contact w/out touching the dashpad still.Although the magnet is pushing slightly on the gauge cluster.

Never really had that problem. It's less than ideal, but a person can do a lot better than stock without resorting to extreme measures like kick panel pods or door mounted fixtures.

Good to know. I have a set of Kenwoods in my 82 that I bought in 2008, but I don't remember the model and they fit perfect. I need two sets for my other two Firebirds.

Agreed. It depends on what one's objective is. "Better" is a relative term (and so is "good"). FWIW, I tried the Polk 4x6 in there. And yes, it did sound better but not good, just my opinion.

FWIW, I got the Polk DB461 4x6 in there.

When I put anything other than a tweeter in the dash, I typically use dynamat to seal off as close to an appropriately sized area for the driver that I can. I didn't do this with the 4x6 speakers I put in my old IROC because it was a budget build running off low power from the head unit. I'm usually pretty critical regarding car audio, but as other's have stated, I was just looking for something "OK" in this case.

I installed these last night, 1992 Trans Am convertible. Fit great. Sound pretty good. Much better than the stock speakers atleast.

hey everybody i've been looking for speakers to replace my blown factory sets in my 82'. i'm not an audiophile so i dont know much. after weeks of looking i think i found a set of 6x9s i like for the back can anybody give me their opinion on them? Also is it a problem if i'm using them with my stock head unit and no amp?
