Help With CCQ-Jet

Well here is the problem its a 1987 305 with a q-jet with factory prom edelbrock intake and holley Mech. fuel pump with regulator@6psi full hooker exhaust with no smog junk.

The problem when its sitting and warm it idles fine after he drives it and puts it in park the idle will jump up to 2000 rpm, also the idle will raise from 900 to 1200 when the electric fans come on. Where do you think the problem may lay. The carb has never been rebuilt and the car has only 55000 miles on it.

Thanks

I am no expert, but I would say check your timing. My car was doing the same thing when I put it in park, turns out my distributor was loose and had moved. Threw out my timing big time.I was also getting run-on when I shut it off due to the high RPM's.
Just my 2 cents...

yeah well I am getting the run on in his car also. I am pretty sure the timing is set correctly but it will give me something to recheck and start again with.

Thanks

Define "no smog junk".

900 is pretty high for a mostly-stock engine. Mine idles at 550 in drive. That could be problem #1.

When the fan comes on, does the idle solenoid engage? The solenoid should be engergized when the A/C is on, and the fan should come on when the A/C is on, but the solenoid shouldn't be energized with just the fans. You may have a crossed circuit there.

He has removed the idle solenoid since the A/C has been removed. Smog junk is the.....cat.......air pump.....air injection lines.

Well, that eliminates the solenoid from the suspect list.

I'd check choke operation, and IAB/MCS dwell next. That 900 RPM idle sounds way too high as well.

its 900 rpm in gear not in park do you still think its too high. I have learned a good bit about the holley and the standard Q-jet but this computer controlled one is killing me. Thanks for all the help keep the ideas coming.
