84 T/A...Carb trouble This car has been sitting for a while and It will start and run but misses and will pop and blow flames from the carb.....What needs to be done.... I have not done a tune up yet but it will run as long as you give it gas..it is the stock carb.....I know TBI not Carb..hehe...pleeze help |
Wait a minute, what car are we talking about here, your "profile" car, or an '84 T/A?????? |
84 TA that I bought this past sunday..It was crashed and I'm trying to get it running... |
Wait is it a TBI or carb? There is a carb sections and I recommend you post the thread there...I know I dont look at the carb section because my carb is TBI. Only safe to asume carb people do the same. |
My '92 Camaro is a tbi..it is fine....... I bought an 85 Trans Am with a 305 in it and it has a carb on it The carbbed TA is what I am haveing trouble with I was just saying I know how to work on a TBI but have had no experience with a carb...Thanks |
Okay, I think I finally understand. Your original post was extremely cryptic. Step 1: Drain all the gas and put in fresh. Step 2: Do a tune-up, including fluid & filter changes. |
Sorry, I was trying to say that I can work on a tbi but know very little about carbs...Sorry...Dave ---------- thanks |
Check the timing on both closed and open loop.. I'd also reccomend checking out the condition of the spark plugs and plug wires. Make sure nothing is firing out of sequence. Also check the choke and mixture adjustment screws on the baseplate (you may have to take a drill to get the factory block-off's clear) on the carburator itself. New gas doesn't hurt either. |
when i do have it running for a few seconds...there is no fuel coming into the carb I mean when I pump the gas I can see fuel squirt into the carb when I look down the 2bbl side well when I keep it running there is no fuel squirting into the carb unless I pump the gas rapidly... I can make it run all day long by spraying carb cleaner in the throat of the carb...but like i said when I do that i can CAUTIOUSLY look into the top of the carb with the engine running and I see no fuel being pumped into it unless I manually pump the acceleator...so Its firing fine and the timing seems dead on its a fuel or electrical prob and I just don't know where to start with testing the elec connections on the carb...Dave |
hmm.......I'd say check the fuel filter on the front of the carb. Should be a 5/8's on the fuel line side and a 1" on the filter side. is your fuel pump mechanical? Might check how much pressure its putting out. Float adjustment screw could be a culprate.. should be almost dead center on the carb between the mains and secondary choke flaps. have you ever tuned a carb before dude? |
Never got very indepth with tuning a carb.....I have already changed fuel filter....Mechanical fuel pump....Could the float just be stuck or gummed up from it sitting.....I bet thats all it is...but like I said carbs aren't my best ability..hehe....my bro in law is more mechanically inclined on carbs so I may just let him look at it.....I just wantd to do it myself,ya know.....but thanks guys for the help... |
First off: The fuel squirt you see when you open the throttle is the accelerator pump shot. The throttle is connected to a plunger (top driver's side of carb) that pumps this extra fuel into the carb only when the throttle is pressed (opened). It's operating normally. Second: There's way too many variables involved in a car that's been sitting around for a long period for us to diagnose a specific problem remotely. This thing probably needs a complete tuneup like five7 said. If you don't have a manual, go ahead and get one. It can walk you through most everything that needs to be checked. It's probably the simple stuff. If you have any specific questions don't hesitate to ask here, but get the stuff you know is old, and probably worn, out of the way first.. plugs, rotor, cap.. |
I will start with the plugs and ignition componets and replace all of them next week then I will get back you all...Thanks |
I popped the cap off the carb and one of the needles was stuck...I freed it up and put the cap back on and it will run now....wow right...But it needs to be built because I know..well I can just tell... so I have to find someone that can do it... |
Don't "find" someone to do it. Do it yourself. Basic handtools, a few gewgaws, patience and plenty of help (some with pictures) here. Start with: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/carb...qjet-need.html If you run into a problem just ask. |
