Holley carb problem
 

Pulled apart my Holley 2300 carb the other day, im in the process of putting it back together, and i found an area of concern.

It seems there is an area on the front of the baseplate, below the metering block, where there would be a HUGE vacuum leak.
I circled the area of concern.
It seems like this area right below the metering block would let in a large amount of air through the base of the carb.
What are theses little half circle things for?
Should i block them off?
The car would NOT idle at all, thats why i took it off to rebuild.
Just doesn't seem right to me.
I cant find ANY other base plate that has anything like this, obviously someone has been inside here and been drilling, so im curious if this could be my vacuum leak?

Never seen that before... doesn't look factory.

Wouldn't be a vac leak, as it's above the throttle plates.

Looks more like somebody "improved" the carb by disabling that ported vac passage on the pass side... I think that's the one for vac adv. It would prevent vac adv from ever occurring, while "appearing" to be hooked up.

Sounds like some sort of a "trick" for some kind of "carb class" racing.

Pretty much, destroyed and worthless for any other purpose. (and possibly even for the purpose it was putatively done for)

Might be possible to repair it with some epoxy and some sort of a removeable plug to maintain the passage; maybe a tie wrap or something kinda like that. The driver's side one you can just fill the part to make the baseplate gasket surface level; the pass side one, you'd need to stick the tie wrap or whatever along the surface with the little ported passage and fill around the front as well.

Problem I would see with doing that is, if they did THAT to it, no telling what else they did. You might have FAR harder things to find and cure lurking about in there somewhere.

I believe I'd throw that one in the trash and start over.
