QJet 84'T/A
 

Gidday I have an 84' T/A 305ho, auto with a QJet 4bbl nos 17084208, 2873 HYB, I had a mech earht a wire the other day and a ticking noise cab now be heard coming from the carb LH side neer the power piston when the key is turned on prior to ignition , this has never been heard before, if you disconnect the elect connection for the power piston the ticking stops, the car still fires and runs although a bit hairy, hope someone can help, thanks for your time.

That ticking is the mixture control soleniod cycling. There is no power piston in 84 electronic control q-jet. It is supposed to tick. The ticking will stop if you just leave it alone after a few minutes or if you start the car. This tells you that the ECM is controlling the mixture richness/leaness. If it didn't click I would worry.

Whoa... speak English https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/wink.gif. Seriously, that ticking sound IS normal. I bet that it wasn't working right before and the reason is it running a little rough is because it was out of tune before and making up for other problems. Now you need to get the other bugs out and it will be running fine...

Ahhhh, did you say that a mechanic was doing something with your Q-Jet? Yes, it's normal for it to be ticking, but if it's ticking with the key on and the motor off, I would bet that the mechanic left your ECM in "diagnostic mode" and forgot about it. The ECM will cycle the solenoid at a fixed duty cycle and the timing will be fixed. Your "Check Engine" light wouldn't be burned out, would it?

Go back and have your mechanic check that out.

Well i have a 84 Z28 and my MC sol. will make that ticking noise with the key on and the eng. not running. It will tick for exactly 20 sec. Oh, and my carb no. is also 17084208.
