Conclusion: Edelbrock carbs are junk, going back to qjet

After about 2 months of constant tuning, mixture, idle, choke, etc, I have concluded that Edlebrock carbs are junk. I admit that I am not the expert carb tuner but I do have some knowledge and a service manual to help me. I was having problem with everything: idle, electric choke, maintaining a tune due to weather changes, and worst of all horrible accelerater pump woes. Yes, I tried everything, changing the pump position, driling another hole... With this carb, my car was running a horrible 16.2. I put the old quadrajet back on and WOW! Talk about an improvement. The car runs great and picked up power too. I guess I should have learned the first time, I used to have an Edelbrock carb years ago on a jeep and spent hours tuning it only to be disappointed. I just thought I would give a shout out to those looking to buy one. I have also heard countless reports from others that support my conclusion.

Hmm.. all I can say is that you must have been doing something seriously wrong to have had that much trouble.

My edelbrock runs great most of the time.
Sometimes it runs like crap due to extreme weather changes. I still need to learn to tune it. I was able to get my LG4 Trans Am with the Edelbrock 1406 carb to run a 14.9 @ 91.67mph. The Qjet just ran like crap and when the M/C solenoid died, I got the Edelbrock.

i feel some... of your pain just some!!!... i had a q-junk and re-biutl it 3 times and no change in anything! i got a 600edle 1405, and well.... the 1st one idleed like a funny car, the 2nd one surged so bad i almost hit someone at a stoplight! and the 3rd one was ok but,.... yesterday it started running like crap but,... today it ran fine!!! so i ask what the hell is up with edlebrocks??? they dont completely suck like q-junks!! but they are a little touchy!! need new secondary jets 92 1 step lean in mine! and holleys are to damn hard to re-build so your stuck with edle or pay out your butt for a speed demon!! they are absolute perfection!! never saw any probs with one! ever!! but they cost like 500$ and yes i can tune a carb well...decent!!?? any other opions??

Burnout, you are running a single plane torker intake on an old single pattern cam profile and 78cc chamber smog heads! There is no carb in the world that will make that thing idle great. I also ran your cam for 5 years in my 78 Camaro and that cam just has a lumpy idle, you had better get used to carb tuning. Chris I would seriously look at vacuum leaks and other issues on you engine! A carb will only run great unless the rest of the combo is dialed in! HELL, what is you timing. Initial and mechanical advance? Are you running a manifold vacuum advance canister? I have worked with 6 Edelbrock carbs and they are the most trouble free carbs I have ever used! Set the idle screws and drive, make some mods change the rods. CAKE!

The engine is brand new, only has 1500 miles on it. It is a crate engine so everything matches up correctly. Yes, I spent hours checking for vacuum leaks with a pump and gauge. Initial timing: 10 degrees advance, advance @30 degrees. Vacuum advance. See, The qjet I have is computer controld. I know all about using the comp carb with a vac. adv. dist. Even with the vacuum adv. rigged on the qjet, it still runs much much better than the edelbrock. I have had counltess emails with edelbrock, they gave me the actual service manual on the carb, and, it ran like holy crap out of the box. I have gone one step bigger on the jets, spent hours adjusting the idle mixture, cheched and re checked seals and vacuum lines, adjusted the accelerator pump, redrilled a hole for a higher setting, etc. Everyday I drove the car, the idle would charge by about 500rpm. I put the qjet back on (I know, it isn't suppost to work right with that dist) and the car runs perfect. Very smooth idle, great throttle responce and better gas milage. I am no fool, though I may not be the expert. Maybe I just got a bad carb from the factory.
