hoses show flat when i shut the car off

I have a 89 5.7 tpi. When I shut the car off it keeps heating up to above 220. I have a new 180 thermostat, radiator, and dual fans. When I shut the car off the hoses pull flat. Help??

When you shut the car off, the temp will go up--that is normal. Why you ask...well the temp you see is water temp. The actual engine is hotter. When you shut it off, the heat transfer still keeps happening until they become equal. Which hoses go flat? The bottom hose should have a spring in it to prevent it from going flat. The upper hose doesn't. Are you absolutely sure you got all the air out of the system? Is the radiator full? Did you replace the cap (always a good idea when you change the stat and/or coolant). The cap is another cheap part (like the thermostat) that is important. It allows excess pressure back in the overflow tank when the coolant is hot, then allows it back into the radiator when the coolant cools down. Answer those questions and we will help some more...

You probably have a bad radiator cap. I have heard the spring story many times but most stock hoses are not reinforced. The cap is a bi-directional device. Over 15lbs it allows coolant into the recovery tank, then it always allows it to flow back into the rad. When the hose collapses simply loosen the rad cap, if it pops out again get a cap.
