Legal question Is it illegal to cut open a R-134A refrigeration system and vent the stuff into the atmosphere? I know R12 is critical in that regard, but what about 134? |
I am sure the EPA would have something negative to say about that- just on general pricipals. Just going on a gut feeling here. Would probably be best to have the system evacuated by certified shop. And- we'll forget about the 1 kajillion cars going to scrap yards everyday that drooling oil, gas, refrigerant from every orfice that goes into our air and ground water. Viva industrie! S-D |
there is a way to remove the system intact. then you can just take it to a shop and they will dispose of it. i do not know what the fee is for disposing/emptying but it can't be too high right? |

Re: Legal question Originally posted by Tremo Is it illegal to cut open a R-134A refrigeration system and vent the stuff into the atmosphere? It's illegal only if you get caught. |
Re: Re: Legal question Originally posted by IROCZZ3 It's illegal only if you get caught. not cool man. that may be funny about a realativly "victimless crime", like forgetting to signal or not paying your taxes on time, but venting that crap to the atmospher WILL GIVE AS ALL SKIN CANCER AND IS NO LAUGHING MATTER. even jokes like that may encourage some ******* to actualy do it instead of spending the $$ to do it right. |
Re: Re: Legal question Originally posted by Danno How about keeping the rhetoric off the boards before I request the moderator to do so. It does not belong here, try NPR. Dan:mad: Also, the political stuff has already been covered- see here: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...ight=political Maybe you can get them (mods, admin, whatever) to actually enforce the codes, I was not able to. There is some certain irony between the political views and the fact there is a question about whether or not the ac refirgerant can be vented into the environment. Then there is the reality of it as XTony points out. Also, you quotes begs the question: Would you be willing to do away with your sig as well? Where does the line get drawn? Ahhh crud---- In the name of meaningful bandwidth, lock 'er up, sir! S-D |

Relax man, lol. I figure if the poster has to ask if it's illegal something tells me he's gonna do it anyway, but I could also be wrong... I know what you're saying and I like clean air as much as the next guy but it's no different then someone whose AC quit working because it leaked into the atmosphere. Or the guys who gut or remove their cat converters and disable all smog devices- which is an EPA violation! I can go on and on.... |
from SEC. 609. SERVICING OF MOTOR VEHICLE AIR CONDITIONERS. (c) Servicing Motor Vehicle Air Conditioners.- Effective January 1, 1992, no person repairing or servicing motor vehicles for consideration may perform any service on a motor vehicle air conditioner involving the refrigerant for such air conditioner without properly using approved refrigerant recycling equipment and no such person may perform such service unless such person has been properly trained and certified. The requirements of the previous sentence shall not apply until January 1, 1993 in the case of a person repairing or servicing motor vehicles for consideration at an entity which performed service on fewer than 100 motor vehicle air conditioners during calendar year 1990 and if such person so certifies, pursuant to subsection (d)(2), to the Administrator by Janu- ary 1, 1992. i didn't see it on the site, but in sure its there somewhere, but i believe the word "consideration" means for pay, barter, or for any other type of compensation or profit. someone else can do all the reading, too many links to check & too much reading there for me. http://www.epa.gov/ozone/title6/609/subsumm.html |
My understanding is that the boards are for technical discussion of TG's. Calling a popularly elected president and administration facists, in my mind just doesn't belong here. That's it, pure and simple. My signature comes from a way of thinking by some of the best educated people in the world. It's philosophy, not religion. My chain does not get yanked easily, I simply think that it's up to us to keep the boards on track. This service is provided by dedicated people and we as users have a responsibility to not be offensive to anyone, that's all. I won't respond or discuss this anymore. If it's OK with the moderators then it's OK with me.:D |
