fan not coming on?

ok before anyone asks yes the fan works i used the paper clip thing it came one. so i was checking my radiator i had put stuff on to seal it since it was leaking a bit and i let it idle it got up to around 230 and well i was told by one of you guys that's round the point it kicks in it didn't kick in it got past the 3/4 mark and i waited still wouldn't come on so i turned it off i paper clipped it again and it came right on this is weird. the upper hose on the radiator gets hot so the thermostat is letting fluid through i think i don't know. this stuff is making me question what i really honestly know about cars.

The factory fan switch turns on @ 238°.

Somewhere around the 3/4 mark on the tempe gauge.

For reference, the center mark on the gauge reads 220*, I have a fan switch that turns on at 215*. HOWEVER, my guage reads over the third tick, almost to the 240* mark before my fan kicks on. so it's possible that your gauge is off like mine.

ok

Re: fan not coming on?

I meant to say it reads just before the 240* mark when my fan kicks on.. :)

Re: fan not coming on?

If you want the turn on set lower the memcal in your ecm can be reprogramed :)
Gm set the engine to run hot to lower emissions .

Re: fan not coming on?

oh how do i get it to turn on

Tuned Performance 11-19-2013 04:47 PM

Re: fan not coming on?

The only way to tell if the gauge is defective or if its the cts is too hook up a scanner and watch the cts and the fan status. Or install a mechanical gauge for better accuracy.

Re: fan not coming on?

well i actualy ment i want to know how to program the engine to run cooler

Tuned Performance 11-19-2013 05:27 PM

Re: fan not coming on?

Reprograming information is in the diy-prom stickies or if you need assistance and want me to reprogram it for you or sell you a memcal send me a pm.

mikey8494 11-19-2013 05:30 PM

Re: fan not coming on?

i dont have the money for the reprograming tools will making it run cooler make it runn better

Tuned Performance 11-19-2013 05:48 PM

Re: fan not coming on?

having the fans come on at 200f and off at 185f will cause the engine to run cooler. Engine wear im sure is reduced but i doubt you could feel any power increase in the butt dyno.

i mean will it maybe run a bitm ore eficient on fuel

ok so i shouldnt worry

Re: fan not coming on?

The fan in my 91 formula 305 tbi never came on at any reasonable temperature. I thought it might be the temperature sensor, so I installed a new-same problem. I decided to bypass the temperature sensor and wire the fan to a "hot in run" 12 vdc source. The fan now runs when the key is turned on. I would rather have the fan on than take a chance on over heating my engine, besides, the engine comes up to the thermostat temperature for inside heating.

how do i do that

Here is info on how to wire the fan.
I am assuming that you have some knowledge with wiring and reading wiring diagrams.

i know how to do some wiring but reading wireing diagrams not so much

Re: fan not coming on?

If you have a friend that is familiar with wiring diagrams who could help you with this modification, then that would be ok, otherwise maybe you should not take a chance. I see that you live in NC. I live in Greensboro. I don't know how far apart we are, but if it is worth it to you I would make the modification for you free.

Gain access to the Fan Relay.

Ground the
green wirewith a
White stripe.

Don’t cut it and ground it, just select a place in the wire so you have room to work, remove some insulation, wrap and solder a new wire onto it, then ground that new wire.

The Fan Relay is the one on the left.

Nearest the fender for newbies.

Epilogue:

You could cut the wire, then ground the wire still attached to the relay socket, however with the original plan reversing the procedure to stock is as easy as clipping that one new wire.

Happy Racing!

Re: fan not coming on?

Ok I have a question! I have replaced the following on my 1989 Camaro 5.0 RS:

Water pump, thermostat, thermostat gasket, upper and lower radiator hoses, Heater control valve, coolant temp sensor on the intake manifold, radiator fan switch on the passenger side of the block, radiator fan relay, the gauge temp switch on the driver side of the engine block, I also replaced with a brand new OEM temp gauge for the dash, and unless I put my heater on full blast, the fan will not kick on. Just to be safe we grounded the wire for the radiator fan switch and it still does not kick on when the car reaches the 220 temp reading on the gauge. It only kicks on if you have the key in the pre ignition. I am seriously wondering what I could be missing considering I have changed everything else! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

In my car, the oil pressure sending unit powers the fan relay. If the sending unit isn't working, the relay won't either. Otherwise, check the wiring on the fan switch. It's possible you have an issue there. How is your fan relay wired?

Mine has a brown wire from the OPSU, a thick black one from the fan, a thick red one that goes to the starter, and a green one to the fan switch.

Re: fan not coming on?

Another solution is to install an adjustable electric fan switch. I got one from summit for about 35 to 40 bucks. I can set fans to come on anywhere from 160 to 240.

I have one running for 5 years now, no problems I had 2 on my 04 Dodge Ram Hemi controlling a 2 speed fan they work great but you have to keep it away from water or the fan will stay on until it dries out, but other than that so many people fighting with stock switches and this adjustable ones work great
