89 Stroker 5.0 Cal Legal ECM https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...668e488496.jpg I'm Hoping you guys can put me in the right direction. I am completing my engine build.( I am not looking for input of why I didn't build a 350 or 383) The car is a 1989 Iroc 5.0 Five speed. And it has to Pass California Smog. I have spoke with Steve at Westech and he is recommending Mega squirt for the Dyno. But for running in the car, the company says it does not support the emissions system. This is very close to a stock looking car. so I really don't want to go crazy on wiring and converting it. Maybe there is someone in Orange county Ca that can tune this?? Here are my specs. very basic mild build. probably 300HP at the engine. 3.766X3.750 343CU IN, 9.7to1 Crane H Roller Ca. Legal 214 220 112 480 500 W/ 1.6 rockers Trickflow 175 heads,TPI Edelbrock lower, SLP runner, they look stock. Ported upper and stock throttle body. Hooker shorty Legal headers. Magnaflow full exhaust with legal dual cats. Thank in advance for any help! |
Re: 89 Stroker 5.0 Cal Legal ECM Why not tune it yourself ? You can get a wideband o2 sensor and tie it into d8 of your ecm. There is a moates burn 2 in the classifieds section. |

Re: 89 Stroker 5.0 Cal Legal ECM Awesome, I will read up on it. I know nothing about TPI OBD1 Tunning. So this will plug into my original computer and allow me to burn my own chip? That would be wonderful if that is truly all it takes. |
Re: 89 Stroker 5.0 Cal Legal ECM You need a few things in order to tune. A burner like the moates.net burn 2 a piggyback adapter moates.net g1 a few eeproms moates sst27sf512 You also need to datalog moates xtreme aldl You can use tuner pro rt to datalog and make changes to your tune. Yours stock chip is soldered into a piece called a memcal. The burn 2 cannot burn this older style 27c128 chip. You would also want to but a moates hdr1 in order to read your original tune to base a starter tune off of. You can tune using your stock o2 sensor feedback but incorporating a wideband signal is very helpful. Another option would be Dynamic EFI ebl ecm. You would need to retire to go from maf to speed density but it can help you with fueling learns. It also can control your egr, air pump system and charcoal purge. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/atta...air-flow-tuned |
Re: 89 Stroker 5.0 Cal Legal ECM Yeah go with the EBL system. You can leave the MAF in place and just add a MAP sensor. The smog people will never know. Most more modern cars have both anyway. All they will be doing is a visual inspection and a tail pipe sniff. With some "smog day" tuning, and a little denatured alcohol it will look like the cleanest third gen exhaust those smog monkeys have ever seen. GD |
Re: 89 Stroker 5.0 Cal Legal ECM Ok guys, so what are the detailed steps and parts/tools needed to go ELB? Thanks.. |
Re: 89 Stroker 5.0 Cal Legal ECM What's involved in piggybacking in the Megasquirt system into the stock under hood wiring harness and under dash computer? |
Re: 89 Stroker 5.0 Cal Legal ECM I don’t know anything about the mega squirt . I would assume you need a distributor signal, cts, tps, iac, Vss, iat and May all feed to both ecms. letting the stock ecm control egr, tcc lockup and ccp. As for the wiring from tpi maf to sd I would message rbob and ask what’s involved. |
Re: 89 Stroker 5.0 Cal Legal ECM Off topic I'm sorry but what are those rims?? They look like a Year One Chevelle Rep kinda thing, but they look perfect |

Just get the EBL and run that. It's about a 30 minute hook up. You need a MAP sensor ($15 on ebay), and the EBL ECM. Laptop with USB for tuning. EBL has factory knock control. Huge plus in it's corner. MS has..... probably ZERO for knock control. If you want bad-a$$ stand-alone, it's not MS - get a LINK. They have some amazing program-ability. GD |
