ECM Help

I purchased a 1983 Berlinetta, 305, AT, Carb, with CA Smog all stock. Last guy was having a hard time getting it to run well and pass smog. I replaced all the smog parts, tune up, found some small electrical issues with lights and got the car to pass smog. Shortly after passing smog I was coming off the highway and the car started to stutter and run bad. Died a few times. Took it to a well recommended (by a FB 3rd Gen group) garage and the diagnosed a BAD ECU. Said it was not suppling voltage to the carb but the wiring and carb tested fine. So I purchased a new AC Delco ECU and swapped them out. I made the mistake of putting the EPROM chip in backwards. So I ordered a ECU w/EPROM from Ebay. Same service number and BCC letters. Car ran really bad. Opened them up and noticed the notches for chip alignment where opposite in the two. All the solders and printed circuits seemed to be the same. So I am thinking about trying a new chip from Jetchip but which way should it go in? Also why did the replacement ECU not work? Is there a resource for searching ECU and Prom info for a 1983 Camaro? TIA

Wow 50-50!!! Don't want to stir you wrong. Found couple of pics on-line but it doesn't mean that it's 100% correct. I wonder if you had that original plastic piece in the pic, appears that it's cut in such a manner it matches the notch on the case but the notch on the EPROM goes to the other side. My understanding is if you had it in backwards and you powered up, the EPROM is toast but the ECM could still be good.

More bad news today from Jetchip. They are unable to program a chip with BMF so now I am stuck looking for a BMF chip on ebay and pick n pulls. Wish I better understood the ECM and Eprom part of these cars.

Re: ECM Help

Been hearing that those OTP EPROMs are getting harder to find and due to the different pin configuration the newer stuff won't work or can be made to work but with some a$$ pain. Does this car hafta stay original? I'm wondering if you could go with a later ECM but or course you would need to make sure the wires pin for pin is the same. I don't have any schematics for that vintage. I've swapped a '86 L69 ECM into my '87 LG4 with no ill effects.

Re: ECM Help

I tried the ecm/eprom put of my 86 iroc. Had the same v5, arb, and AT but did not work. But I did not re-pin anything. Just picked up a matching Berlinetta for parts and hoping the ECM/EPROM works. Thank you for the response.
