Need help with standalone tcm

First i want to say hi to all great people here , 2nd im new to programming, i been reading a lot in the site and found great info that im still trying to digest , i got a few questions for you guys.

currently im trying to use a standalone computer to drive my 4l65e behind a cummins diesel and i got a hold of a tcm from a 94 g van with the 6.5 diesel and 4l80e l65 diesel engine , to start i got some hardware to read the chips, a willem programmer and uv eraser i had before for bioses .

the computer has this number 1 6196390 DRBM and has the blue chip , i cant find nothing on the web for this tcm.

my question is if i read the eprom , get the bin , how would i know which definition file to use & program id byte? , if theres one? and what kind of chip is in this tcm , i dont know yet how to identify them.

i found there is one $D3 16128420 definition file for tcms used in 92-93 c/k diesel trucks with the 27c128 , would i be able to use this definition file?

the reason on using the 6390 tcm is because im told it can drive the updated force motors on 94 + transmissions and its standalone. guidance would be much appreciated , :thanks:

Re: Need help with standalone tcm

I don't know anything about the ecm your using. Can't help there.

I do know a little about using a GM ecm to control just a trans though. I have done it twice now.

I used the 16197427 ecm with $OE mask (4l80e), in your case you would want the $OD mask (4l60e/65e)

It does have fuel stuff in there also, but I just left that stuff unhooked obviously and so far 3-4yrs later it is working fine.

The trouble you will have with ECM you got is the lack of others playing with it also. Good news is being a tranny only bin it shouldn't be too hard to hack but it will take a lot of work on your end to figure it all out.

Re: Need help with standalone tcm

ty1295, have you tried to have the 16197427 PCM run the ignition as well as the transmission but not the fuel system?

This is what I am looking into doing but have only found guidance on using the slower 747 ECM to run the ignition only.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

so then is possible to use the 16197427 trans only using just vss ,tps & rpm?

and this 7427 is for 1994 & newer 4l60e?
thanks

Re: Need help with standalone tcm

Never used it for more than tranny control, as the vehicle we used it in (GMC Syclones) already had the stock ecm which is very well hacked and already setup for boost.

There are a few inputs you need, I can't remember them exactly off hand. RPM, TPS, Voltage, Key On, Coolant temp (as it adjust lockup via this), a few more but it isn't too bad. I sent my info to a buddy that made a website and got one working the other day. I will see if I can find the link to the info he collected from me and others.

Have you had any luck on the diesel van TCM? Have you checked with the HMMWV guys, they run the same computer on the older ones also. I looked around on this about a year, ago but got sidetracked.

Give me your E-mail and I'll send you the my notes, partial hacks and other stuff I found. It aint much but its a start.

I think westers and tunercat had some stuff.

Do you have a wiring diagram for the van? I have the one for the hummers(94 and later trans) and the 92-93 trucks. They are wired exactly the same except, the output speed sensor, IIRC they are on two different TCM pins.

My 93 6.5 dually has the 94 and later style trans and would like to make it right. I've talked to alot of trans shops and they say the solenoids will interchange fine, but I just dont know. My TCC went out a while back and I wonder if the slower htz TCM is what caused it.

Re: Need help with standalone tcm

i found a tcm from a 93 1500 truck with the 6.2 and had the 4l60e , so it worked fine, i was wrong about the force motors on the 4l60e 1993-2002 then they changed, and til 93 for the 4l80e 94 & on are different i believe .
you can email me here on the board. i activaded it. thanks.

Re: Need help with standalone tcm

I just joined and see you've done research on running a 4l60E in an older vehicle. Would you share your notes with me?

I am starting from scratch so I need information on the TCM, 4L60E hookups, TCM and laptop hookups and software to program with, etc.

So far I've read the TCM should come from a 92 93 Diesel. Where do I learn about programming it?

Is there any literature published that you know of?

Thanks much for your help, Pat

Re: Need help with standalone tcm

Thanks kruise, what do you usr for a gear indicator, or does the 4L60E have the shift lever like the 700R4?

What about programming, any tips on how to get started?

Thanks again.

Re: Need help with standalone tcm

for indicator i used the electronic prndl switch that came with my truck, but it does have a lever you can use a mechanical indicator , what i changed is that i went with a mechanical diesel engine .

i didnt got into programming because i liked the way it was , there is plenty of info around here on programming , also check moates.net
$D3 definition file - 92 - 93 C/K Diesel Truck L65 ,hope it helps.

Thanks kruise. I have enough to get started now. May come back in a few weeks with more questions.
