AutoPROM not connecting to ECM?

I am extremely new to PROM programming so please bear with me. I have a 165 ECM and I’m trying to program it with the Moates AutoPROM. When connecting the AutoPROM to the ECM it seems to do nothing. It’s as if the car is in limp home mode. As soon as I turn the key to the on position the fans kick on and it runs like crap. I am able to upload a bin to the AutoPROM, verify it, and start emulation, but it’s as if nothing is happening. I disconnected the AutoPROM from the ECM and ran it with nothing connected at all just as a test, no chip either, and it ran the exact same way. Any ideas what the prob could be?

I haven’t used the apu1 but are you checking your offsets ?
The 165 ecm is a bear to connect to. You might have to try another ecm to be able to connect to it. Last time I did a live 165 tune I had to go through 3 ecms to get one to successfully connect. That’s just the nature of the 165 ecm afaik.

I know this is true when connecting to the ALDL port, but is it the same when connecting an emulator directly to the ECM? Shouldn’t it just see it as if a chip were in place?

I was under the understanding the emu is the file that’s read and the burner is just a burner not like a piggyback. Maybe shoot moates a email.

It might have something to do with the checksum disable. I did not know about this. I’ll have to try to disable it or save the bin before uploading it. Maybe it sees it as a corrupt chip?

Re: AutoPROM not connecting to ECM?

AFAIK the checksum is a check at startup . The wrong checksum for the .bin would result in code 51 or limp home mode.

Re: AutoPROM not connecting to ECM?

Correct but on Moates it says that if you don’t save the bin before uploading to the ECM then it doesnt run the checksum. It says to either save before uploading or disable the checksum in the mask. I’m gonna try that. If you don’t have checksum disabled then you can’t do on the fly changes. The ECM will think the prom is corrupt.

I disabled the checksum in the xdf but I'm still having the same problem. I emailed Craig. I'll just have to wait until he gets back to me.

Re: AutoPROM not connecting to ECM?

If it was a checksum issue the SES/CEL would be rapidly flashing.

My guess is that the SES/CEL just turns on and stays on. Which means that the ECM isn't running from the BIN.

Also, at key-on, engine-off look for the SES/CEL blink. If no blink off then not running from the BIN. Try it with the MEMCAL to see what it looks like.

Need to key-off for at least ten seconds to re-try the test.

RBob.

Re: AutoPROM not connecting to ECM?

Yeah I didn’t see the ses light flashing. It just stays on. I have a chip adapter on it and I had a chip in it until yesterday. It was at least running with the chip. Not well, bc it needs tuning(obviously bc I posted this thread lol). But now it basically won’t run. Unfortunately, when I took the chip out, one of the prongs got bent. I tried gently bending it back but of course it broke. I have a spare chip, so I can burn another one, but I hate pulling them in and out of the ECM bc they’re so damn fragile! That’s one of the reasons I bought the APU1. That and I wanted to do on the fly tuning.

Re: AutoPROM not connecting to ECM?

Just to clear up the whole Checksum deal...

The Checksum disable is only needed if there are on the fly changes being made to only part of the BIN. If uploading a complete bin and making no changes, then Checksum does not need to be disabled.

So effectively you can use an emulator, and upload complete BINs without worrying about disabling Checksum.

So basically at the beginning of any tuning session you should be able to upload a BIN to the emulator, turn the key on and have the ECM read the BIN just fine, regardless of the Checksum ability.

Basically this is a long winded way to get to do not proceed any farther, do not pass go, do not collect $200 until you get this part working.

When you get to the point of the emulator connecting and want to make changes, you will want to disable Checksum, which is done by changing the mask byet to "AA".

Back to diagnosing the issue:

Which way do you have the ribbon cable plugged in? Pictures of exactly how you have the hardware connected will be very helpful here.

Which way are the two switches when you're trying to emulate?

Are you using an inverter to power the laptop?

Re: AutoPROM not connecting to ECM?

Yes, the checksum disable is only required for on the fly changes. I have the ribbon connected with the red stripe toward the end where the notch in the chip normally is. Both switches are set “inboard.” I can try to get pics later.

Re: AutoPROM not connecting to ECM?

I have another question. I am kind of confused with the mask files. There seems to be three for the 165 ECM. $6E, $32, and $32B. My car is an 87 with MAF. Which mask should I be using, or will any of them work? Are all three of these for MAF cars or are some for speed density? What is the difference between the masks? I noticed that they are all slightly different.
