Where is the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) located??????
 

This might one of the dumbest questions asked yet. But I need to know where the speed sensor is located on my car. It's a 85 Camaro, but everything motor, tranny,wiring is from a 89 Camaro. Can someone help me out with a pic or tell me where to look for it, and give some kind of idea of what it looks like.

the speedomoter in the dash?????the dash and all the guages are from a 89 also. or is it on the tranny.

Ok I'm still confused here......I'm looking in a haynes book and a chilton book and for the 89 5.0 tbi the haynes book shows it by the ecm. The chilton shows it by the TCC. but in the haynes they are calling it a vehicle speed buffer. While the chilton is calling it the VSS.
This is really confusing to me, my engine light came on as I was coming home from work, also my speedometer was all of a sudden 15 mpr off. I ran a code check and it came out to be 2 flashes pause 4 flashes which is the VSS.
A friend of mine told me it was on my transmission, I didn't see one. So it woundn't be the little yellow box with wires to it. Is it????
Maybe someone can post a better pic for me or something. I know I'm stupid.........It's been a long day at work and I've been working on this thing for 2 months. After I get this done hopefully I can run this through emissions...........

Check down the following link and you'll see the yellow VSS box on the backside of the speedo/gauge cluster. I "believe" on Camaros this was the location through 89.

That is correct JamesC, they had an RPO code of
E5Z Speedometer Adapter (delete)

E7Z VSS (delete)

E9Z Speedometer Key (delete)
This indicated that they had an optical VSS that was located on the instrument cluster instead of down on the transmission. However this did not apply to the L03 models. The L03 or 305 TBI engine was the one that had the VSS Buffer box located next to the ECM under the dash.
Dennine3003, I missed the 305 TBI in your profile. On your car, as mentioned above, the VSS buffer box is located under the dash near the ECM and is a yellow box. The VSS itself is located in the left side of the transmission case and has a two wire connector with a yellow wire and a purple wire. If I were you, I would first check these two wires at the connector first and then the sensor. Here is a picture of it and where it is located on the transmission. The one for your car is the circled area with the "X".:D

I know this is an old post...but I am having the same issue with my 89 TBI (finding where to plug in the VSS wires to the tranny)

I looked at the diagram which Trickster posted...and I see the area circled...but there is no "plug" to plug the Yellow/purple two pronged wire connector into. There is a hard metal line come out of where there should be a connector.

Should that yellow/purple wire be plugged into anything???? Is it just me that I cant see it?

Dave, I don't know if that is the same vehicle that you have listed in your profile or not. However, that speed sensor only applies to a 305 (LOE) engine. Not a vehicle that has a 350 engine in it. Those engines have the VSS located in the instrument cluster and have a hard flexible cable running to the back of the speedometer. Was your engine or transmission changed at some point?

Hi Trickster...thanks for your response.

The original engine was a 305 (L03)....swapped in 350 but kept the original wiring harness from the the L03. Tranny is still the stock 700R4.

Is it possible that this doesnt need to be plugged in?

When you swapped out the engine, did you also swap out the ECM and the instrument cluster?

Nope....ECM and Instrument cluster stayed the same, with the engine swap it was only the actual engine which was replaced...everything else is the same (well more or less..nothing related to the tranny, or wiring etc)

It seems to run well etc...had it out yesterday for about an hr and no real issues with anything....perhaps it wasnt plugged into anything in the first place?????

I can snap a photo if that would help?

i have a question and or a problem i was wondering if anyone could help me? i recently put my 85 iroc 28 with 305 tpi together after not running in years. the car seems to run great but gets a high idle and seems like the tranny stays engaged when trying to brake the rear wheels stay turning and push the car...you have to take it out of gear or shut the car off to stop it... it has code 24 and i also have a brown wire and a black/red wire i dont know where they go

You need to make your own thread to get help. This thread is almost 2 years old and had nothing to do with your problem. You should post in the Tech/General Engine forum, youll get a better response there.

Actually vetteoz, on the 1985 camaros there were two styles of speed sensors incorporated that year. One was an optical speed sensor located in the speedometer in the instrument panel, the other one was a generator type sensor located in the transaxle. It depends on what rpo codes you have on the data tag as to what speed sensor you have. This also applies to several other years including my 1989 Iroc-Z.

hey my spedometer doesnt work either i went under the car and found a plug disconnected like the one in the picture u posted and it still doesnt work what else could i try
