ign lock cylinder question 2 Attachment(s) i have a 91 camaro RS automatic 305ci i recently was going to go to OCMD for the big cruise in ocean city!! on the day we were going to leave...i went to get gas and went to shut off the car and it stayed running. Before this all happened, my ign cylinder was feeling a little tight while turning it! then a small cylindrical peice of metal fell out and hit my leg, i think it was for the tilt steering...which also now it doesn't lock. Anyway!! i can start my car fine, it starts when it needs to...but when i went home and shut it off, it again didnt shut off. so i have to go under hood and take out my fuel pump fuse and disconnect the battery....cause the key is still in the accessary position. even if its in the off position! now, will i have to replace the ign cylinder itself or is there a little more i have to get into to find out what is wrong?? i was allready to go on the almost 3 1/2 hr drive!!! Re: ign lock cylinder question Yes, the ignition cylinder is shot. And yes, you can replace it yourself. If it not a very involved repair. Before you throw out the old key, measure its resistance (or bring it to the dealership) because when the dealer cuts you a new key, they need to know what "number". Hope this helps. Lou |
Re: ign lock cylinder question you will also want to buy a steering wheel puller and the lock plate removal tool.... maybe rent it from autozone if they have it |
Re: ign lock cylinder question Thanks...is it hard to oull the column out?? Ive had it down for something, but thats it..i havent disconected it. I do work in a garage, but i rather take it out there and replace why i need to then have it sitting in my work taking up a bay. |
Re: ign lock cylinder question You don't need to remove the whole steering column, just pull the steering wheel off. You should find the puller either at work or rent it from Autozone, as Hitman pointed out. Of course, refer to the repair manual for the proper procedure to remove all the parts under the steering wheel and pay good attention to the air bag disabling instructions. |
Re: ign lock cylinder question okay guys...thank you i will get to this a some point. thanks for the info |
Re: ign lock cylinder question i can still start my camaro even with the ign cyl turning hard...i was told it could be the ign switch? |
