Help with VATS

Do all the parts of the VATS components have to be intact even if it is disabled in the ECM? In my 91Z the VATS has been disabled in the ECM and has worked like a charm ever since, well until tonight. I had to tighten the tilt mechanism and when I got to the ignition switch I just cut the two small white wires going into the ignition switch. When everything is all back together I attempt to start he car and nothing. I turn the key, the fuel pump primes, the security light doesn't come on, the voltage gauge maxes out and the engine doesn't turn over. Do all the parts of the system have to be intact even if it is disabled in the ECM?

Re: Help with VATS

VATS controls two functions in the car:
1) fuel injection via the ECM
2) starter via the Starter Enable Relay

You disabled the fuel injection control in the ECM.
Did you disable the SER? If not, the non-functioning VATS now does not enable your starter circuit, not allowing you to start the engine.
You can disable the SER by grounding the thin black/yellow wire.

Re: Help with VATS

Just figured out what the problem is. The VATS was disabled in another chip and later I started having problems with that chip so I put my VATS enabled chip back in. I just forgot about switching back to the VATS chip in the aggravation of it not starting, ruled all else out by temporarily wiring my extra ignition key into the system and it fired right up. So tomorrow I'll be making a trip to Radio Shack to pick up the right amount of resistors. Thanks for your input Lou.
But just so I understand;
After disabling the VATS in the ECM and disabling the SER by grounding the thin black/yellow wire all of the VATS components can be removed. Correct?

Yes but you will have a hell of a time getting to the VATS box behind the dash. They built the car around it. :)
