Gauge problems

When I start the car the temp gauge turns over all the way then goes back down. Is it the sender that is need of replacement or the gauge itself? I checked all the wires and they are fine and go to where they should.

It is normal when you start the engine for the gage to do that.

It is part of a testing circuit.

It proves the gage is functional.

Re: Gauge problems

I left a few parts out of that. I know that is normal function. The gauge does not function after that. I just drive for 50 minutes and the temp gauge didn't move. The car is cooling itself just fine but I would like the gauge to work properly.

I am assuming it is the sender on the cylinder wall that is faulty.

Most likely the sender is defective or disconnected.

To find out if the connection from the sender to the gage is good, with the engine OFF, but the key in the RUN position, ground the sender wire, then look at the temp gage.
If the connection is good the gage will peg, therefore the next thing to look at would be the sender.

The temperature sender is located in the top left front of the engine most VINS.

Using an ohmmeter, with the engine cold and sender wire removed, probe the sender from the center pin to ground.

If the sender is good you will see approximately 1400 ohms on the meter.

Re: Gage Rage

I checked the sender wire and it was connected. I will pull the wire off tomorrow and test the sender.
