Carb or TPI...That is the question?

Ok, heres my scenario...I've spent the last 2 years bulding my car... The car has frame problems and many other misc things that are just killing me. I am trading my bug for an 86' Iroc 305 TPI, And am planning on swapping all my hard work onto that, Everything from the motor to exhuast and seats and stereo and even grill and stuff is going into the IROC... Now the question is what should I do for the motor...The 305 has a main bearing gone so I am scrapping the motor...I am trying to decide whether I should keep my carb setup and just run carb and all mechanical guages and my pod that I have now, And spend my money on cam and head upgrade. Or Switch my 350 over to TPI. I already made a post about doing the TPI swap and have decent info on that...So should I go TPI, and get all the sensors and electtic guage sensors and everything and get it dependable that way...(I really like the idea of TPI, since I have to put alot of back and forth to college miles on it next year) Or keep the carb, Which is running great, and spend the money on a buildup of the motor? If I stay carb will the lockup converter still work without computer signal? Any opinions wanted... I need to figure what I gotta make for $$$!!

Keep the carb, put the rest of the money into the motor, and other modifications. DOnt bother with going back to the TPI if youve got a reliable carb setup. Just dont get to radical, remember its your daily driver:D

C'mon people I really want some opinions here...You've helped me on everything on my car so far!

carb or tpi

Tpi in my opinion,I've had both and Ilove all the tourque that the tpi has

Well if you know how to tune your carb setup (keep it running good), then I say stick with it. You can tune it to get almost as good gas mileage as the TPI setup, and it will make way more horsepower in the higher RPM's.

Like I said above, if you already have a good running carb combo, dotn ruin it. Keep it and use it. Forget about the TPI.

MrDude_1 05-21-2004 01:37 PM

if you ever plan on running any kind of forced induction, keep the TPI.

otherwise, theres no clear reason to swap, esp when you have all the parts.

if you did reuse the TPI, add in a HSR, LT1 manifold or atleast a SR into the cost.. just to keep from losing power.. lol.. also add in lil things like prom burning equipment and a laptop.

this route does cost a little more, but if you need it its worth it..
if you dont need it, then dont bother :)

Well I cut all the exrta harnesses out my 82 when I did my motor swap, Since my motor is a 78' motor with nothing electrical on it. What should I do with this car? I need to know if I need to go buy a TCI or B&M lockup control? Should I just forget about the computer and just run my mechanical triple pod? Get sensors and use the stock guages...Any other help for a TPI to Carb setup!!!

MrDude_1 05-21-2004 02:21 PM

if it was me?

id just keep the sensors there and use the stock gauges.
for TCC, i would either get a kit, or possibly just let the ECM still do it, just not have it hooked to anything besides what it needs....

basicly for the gauges, you just unscrew them from the old 305 and screw them into the new motor. then plug em in..

i would NOT cut any wires out of the current EFI harness.

SLOWFIVEOH 05-21-2004 03:01 PM

But would the TCC still work off the ECM if there wasnt any EFI giving signals to the ecm?

87Formula4bbl 05-21-2004 03:11 PM

Ya, just leave the ECM plugged in, it should run the TC lockup with only the VSS signal, but I think it does use some other inputs such as TPS signal, but someone else might wanna verify that.

go for the TPI , i love them cuz there torque! My first car i ever driven was my fathers 1986 Corvette with a L98 TPI! DAMN that thing is fast and also my 1991 Z28 camaro has a 350 TPI! Its a great engine and fuel system and go for the 350 over the 305 if u want TPI. I just love when im at a red light and the light turns green, and u just give it a lil gas and u feel the of the car going up cuz the torque:D
