i really want to build a 383 stroker but money isnt something i always have a lot of.. my question is how much would a budget 383 cost? i see them seeling for 3-4,000 and was wondering if it was that much to build it or could you build one for a lot cheaper.. and if any of you guys built your own how much was it?

(I had put together a response, and apparently the server went down before I could submit it.)

From Summit, you can get an externally-balanced 383 crank for about $180 - you'll need an external balance damper and flexplate/flywheel with it. Or, $300 for an internally-balanced crank, which would eliminate the cost of the damper & flexplate/flywheel.

Speed Pro hypereutectic piston/ring kit will run you about $240.

Assuming you have a rebuildable 350 block & rods, you're looking at about $400-600 for machine work, bearings, rod resizing & ARP bolts, gaskets, etc.

So, about a grand for a 383 shortblock w/o cam, oil pump, or tin, with a rebuildable 350 shortblock.

thanks got money from an accident and trying to see if id have enough left over to stick a 383 in.. but i might just go with the 350 now

Yah, I started building a "budget" 383, it turns out budgets are hard to follow cause now that the engine is being built, i had to beef up my rear end. I talked to a few tranny experts and they said if the trans is a fresh rebuild it will be fine but, I want to beef that up anyway. Also, dont foroget about making the body stronger with SFCs and better suspension components...
Not trying to talk you out of it, im just trying to talk you out of your budget cause that was my mistake. Goodluck and i hope for the best.

I built a "budget 383" myself a few months back. What I found was I didn't do a real good job of keeping it a budget build. I started with a non roller 350 block and spent $400 in machine work, then bought a 383 balanced rotating assy from summit, then decided I just had to have a roller cam, and aluminum heads and intake, and the wife wanted it to look good, so all total it cost me almost $ 5000 dollars to build and install my own 383. The motor should make around 450 hp 450 ft lbs, and my cost includes ceramic coated headers, new holley carb endurashine intake, cast aluminum valve covers,aluminum water pump, and more crap than I can remember. This started out as a "budget build" and the budget kept growing. I now have to pull the trans and get it rebuilt as it's slipping in 2nd gear due to the torque from the 383, and then deal with the rearend and trying to decide if it's worth it to install a posi, gears, and new axles into the stock rear, or if I am better off to buy a crate rearend ready to just bolt in (twice the money/twice as strong?) Not trying to talk you out of it, just warning you that it is easy to get carried away and end up spending a lot more than the original plans called for. I have a blast driving this car with the new motor it's the fastest car I have ever owned, and once all the upgrades are done should be able to pull low 12s in the 1/4 which is fast enough for me. At a total cost of around$13 to $14 thousand dollars including purchase price and paint.
Oh yeah almost forgot the wife thinks I need to put a nitrous kit on the car too, just in case.$550
Also now wants custom rims/wider tires $ 1600-2000
new projected total$ 16000 into a car that originally cost me 2800.
Horsepower is as addictive as any drug out there and seems to be more expensive than some.
