Larger Oil pan, oil pan upgrade and headers

I am building a 350 bored .30 over. vortec 062 heads, .442/.462 cam, flat top pistons with the four valve reliefs and was wondering if I should purchase Ibeam rods to replace the stock rods and if I would need a larger than stock oil pan?
I am also interested in what the rest of you have put on for headers? I don't want to order something that won't fit in the car.

I am wondering if either is needed and if anyone has any input on a style of oil pan if a 7quart is recommended.

Judging only from the lift numbers of the cam you quoted, it sounds like a very mild setup. Having the cam duration would provide more complete information, though.

Most likely stock rods will be fine.

Most likely a stock oil pan will be fine.

Most likely Hooker 2055HKR headers will do you well. They'll for sure fit both the heads and the car.

Most likely factory stock Vortec valve springs will not play well with that cam. What do you have planned there?

Re: Larger Oil pan, oil pan upgrade and headers

The cam is a Speed-pro Performance Hydraulic Camshaft Chevy 262-400 2000-4500rpm
Part #: CS1013R

Chevy 262-400 cid Hydraulic camshaft, 2000-4500 RPM Range, 288 intake/298 exhaust Adv Dur, @.050 214 intake/224 exhaust, Valve Lift 443 intake/465 exhaust, Lobe C/L 112.

I was also wondering if I will need taller than stock valve covesr for the lift. As far as I understand the heads have to be modified to accept the larger than .450 lift.

Oh and I have a machine shop ready to do the required modifications to the valves for the new cam.

If the valves are stock length then everything will still fit under the stock valve cover.

If you don't have that cam yet, I'd advise you not to get it.

If you already have it but haven't unpacked it, I'd advise you to send it back for a refund.

If you can't return it for a refund, I'd advise you to sell it on eBay.

In case you haven't guessed, it's not a very good cam. A lot of advertised duration, not much duration at .050" lift. Makes for a very narrow power band, and not much of one at that. There is so much out there that is much, much better. Give us a better idea of what you're putting together, what you'll be using it for, and we'll be able to suggest something better.

What were you planning on doing to the heads for valve springs?

That's a garbage cam, dude. I'd sooner use a stock L98 cam than that thing.

I was given it as a Christmas gift (That I requested) due to a build sheet from a guy I know. The build was listed as follows:

Northernautoparts.com 350 rebuild kit with the following options:
Coyles Double roller
High Volume Oil Pump
Speed Pro 2000-4500RPM Cs1013R
Sealed Power Flat Top Pistons with moly coated rings
High Volume Oil Pump Shaft
Set or 8 Forged I beam Rods with ARP Bolts
Scat New Crankshaft Cast Steel

Machine Shop:
Block Machined, Hot Tank Cleaned, Bored and Honed .030" over, Cam bearings and Frost plugs installed, and decked

Heads: Vortec Ported not polished due to carbureted, 3 angle valve job, Howards 98214 Valve Springs

Parts: Summit Racing 7qt. oil pan
Speed Way Stainless Windage screen
ARP Main Studs with standoffs for windage tray
Pro Poducts Crosswind Intake for vortec heads
Summit Racing HEI Dizzy
600CFM Carb
1 5/8" Headers into dual 2 1/4" exhaust pipes
2600-2800 RPM stall converter
3.42 axle ratio

I want something with a tough sound and break the tires loose with ease. I don't want something that goes 160mph as I don't have any need to go that fast anymore. I basically want something I can drive to car shows and sound good doing it.

I don't know anything about cams so please forgive my incompetence in saying what's wrong with this cam?

Based on your description regarding your desire of the car, nothing. Usually around here it's: I want to go FAAAAAAAAST. If that were the case, the lift and rpm range of the cam are just tiny and narrow, not much room or time to breathe and no matter what other upgrades you do, they won't fix that. However, you said you really just want to build a cruiser that chugs and burbles so if that be the case, I don't see anything wrong with what you have.

Yeah that is exactly my plans.... I''ll leave the faaaaast stuff to younger guys who don't have kids to worry about providing for. No offense to those guys as we all have been there at one point or another (Racing on the track/ strip is a different opinion= that's for everyone). I want to build a nice cruiser that will have more HP and TQ compared to the stock 163HP V6 that I ripped out.

Re: Larger Oil pan, oil pan upgrade and headers

So can anyone tell me if I need to buy the tall valve covers or will the stock height vortec covers work with this cam lift and roller rockers.

Also does anyone know what size roller rockers I need for these 062 heads?

five7kid 01-08-2014 06:04 PM

You don't need roller rockers. If you do roller rockers, get Comp Ultra Pros. They will fit under stock valve covers. Unless you have the heads modified for screw-in rocker studs and guide plates, you need self-aligning rockers.

Thank You for the help. I was under the impression that roller rockers make a big difference and I would need them.

Re: Larger Oil pan, oil pan upgrade and headers

Aftermarket rockers are more precise. Every one of them will be 1.5 ratio. Stock rockers are all over the place since they're just stamped steel.

With an aftermarket rocker, you get precise tolerances. A roller tip rocker reduces friction across the tip of the valve. Full roller also reduces friction at the fulcrum point. Reducing friction gains a very small amount of HP.

Re: Larger Oil pan, oil pan upgrade and headers

I have this pan
https://www.summitracing.com/dom/parts/stf-91087
You can't use 91088, it'll hit the stock K-member

I also have a 421sbc(3.875 stroke) , and it fits awesome.
I also have 1 7/8 Ed Quay long tube headers, and it fits, but getting the oil filter out is a challenge.
