Pulling Stock Engine-Disengaging Tranny

Have been slowly redoing the Iroc over a long period of time with my son (finished rewiring from mice damage, floor to head liner on the interior, the body and paint, etc.) We decided on a 383 to go into this next (had it for a while), but finally getting to the swap now. We want to get the original 305 TPI out and work on the engine bay to get it looking decent before we drop in the beast. We have followed the countless tips and suggestions on how to swap this and this site has been a godsend with all the wealth of info on here for anything you would want to learn. (And learning we are! Everthing we have done so far has been our firsts, not just on this, but in cars in general), and I must say it has been coming out very well, its a great feeling of accomplishment for both of us. (just dont ask us in the middle of something. lol)... Well, this brings me to the question at hand on pulling this engine. We have everthing undone, taken off that needs to be, marked/tagged, and are trying to pull the engine. As we pull up, working the motor mounts loose (was tight and slightly rusted together), it is really lifting the car up. Ive read this is normal until you get it broke loose and out of the mounts. My fear is, is that it is also pulling the tranny up with it from where I had it blocked up. Not just a little, but as I kept going, it keeps lifting. I finally got up close to 2 inches and stopped and brought it back down to rest where it was. Is this normal for the tranny to stick with the block this much while trying to disengage it from the pins/shaft? I cant move the engine forward until i get it high enough to clear the engine mounts, so Im worried that it will finally disengage and slam down the couple inches from where I had it supported. Do I take the support out and have to chase the tranny up with a jack, then support it after the pull? I cant find anything clear on this part. I have checked everything i can possibly think of, and cannot see anything else that would be holding it except that maby the engine and tranny have tilted into each other?? Just wanted to ask for some expertise rather than just keep yankin and end up regretting afterwards.
Thanks and sorry for the book!

Re: Pulling Stock Engine-Disengaging Tranny

After I noticed about 20 people checked this out, but no replies, and the fact I had to borrow a longer engine hoist just to get the reach I needed for this pull and had to have it back to them tomorrow, I got impatient and just started pulling it up again and back down to see if I could get it to disengage. After the 2nd time of doing this, (mind you, I did this 3 x's before I asked) it actually came up and out like everything i have saw or read. Don't know what the issue was, maybe 32 years or so of being together, who knows. This was my first pull and I just didnt want to mess up anything so I thought I would ask first. oh well. Anyone else down the road doing your first pull, if this happens, just look and relook to see if anything is hung up. If not, just go ahead and pull slowly and keep checking as you do. Your not going to hurt anything and it will come apart eventually as long as your not hung up on anything. if you are, then just undo what you missed and it probably will be even easier to get to anyway with the motor starting to come up. And yes, a little bit of sticking, popping, and maybe a couple of moans before it lets loose is normal, so you can kind of know what to expect if your on your 1st too.
Happy Pulling

Hey a fellow Illinoisan! Sounds like you are on your way, things can and will get seized and stuck on old cars. Sometimes you need to use some force along with finesse. Good luck with the rest and post some pics of the swap!

Re: Pulling Stock Engine-Disengaging Tranny

Raise the car a few inches and put jack stands under the frame... taking the weight of the motor off the suspension will allow the car to move upwards, so raise it first to take up that slack.

Make sure the 3 converter ->flex plate bolts are out, and of course, all 7 bell housing bolts (3 each side, one top middle... the top 3 are easiest to get with a short box wrench from above). Pry the trans back from the engine. It's probably just stuck on the dowel pins.

Thanks for the reply, i got impatient since I had to get the hoist back so as I stated in my 2nd post...i just started yankin, lol. I imagine you were right though, it was just stuck on them, i just didnt know what to expect but all came out good.

Yup! realizing that more and more with this one. I'm between Champaign and Danville, are you anywhere close? I think I will post some pics (if I can figure this out) of the progress we have made and on going. I'm always interested in these and maybe some others will be too.

Re: Pulling Stock Engine-Disengaging Tranny

Ok, going to try this out with the pictures to document our swap. Its the 305 to 383 swap we decided to to put our ROC through. Before we could get there, there was quite a few things we went through to get to that point. From the beginning, I bought this camaro from a guy that was selling it on Ebay up in Michigan. He actually contacted us after a sell fell through with the winner because we had showed prior interest in it. It was nothing special, just an 86 305 TPI. What I liked is that it was all still pretty much original. A little rough, paint wasn't great and had an aftermarket steering wheel, tires, exhaust, and some stickers-no big deal compared to what was out there at the time. This was my 4th third gen, having a 92 RS brand new, traded for an 89 iroc 5.7, crashed that and got an 87 firebird with a v6. That was all gone in the 90's. I wanted to get my son who was about to be born a 3rd gen to hand down to him 1 day, and I knew that the time was right to get one while they were still cheap and plentiful. My check for this one actually cashed on the day he was born! This was back in 2005. I stored and drove this car around for the next couple years, grabbing parts for it here and there. About 4 years ago, this car was leaking oil so bad all over the exhaust that I just parked it in his grandfather's pole barn. During that time I decided to go ahead with getting an engine for it. I just wanted to get a 350 to put in it, something very simple, the typical 305-350 swap with out having to do to much since I have never worked much on cars. As my son and I got more and more into this, it progressed to the sickness/addiction that it has become. We are now putting in an ATK 383 with a Holley Stealth Ram that we ended up buying straight from Holley after they used it on a SEMA car. When the car was sitting it of course got invaded. Not just by mice, but a ground hog burrowed a hole up to the underside of the engine and made a home there, raccoons climbed and scat on it, and of course the mice ate wires, seats, insulation-you name it. Needless to say it was devastating but we did have plans on redoing alot on it anyway. Fast forward to about just over a year ago, we pulled it out with a come along and trailered it to our garage. We washed off a couple years of barn abuse. We had to tear out the whole interior and air it out. Then we started on the wiring. Lots of fixing as you will see in the pictures. Almost the whole interior wiring, from front dash to the auto trunk pull down (and rebuilt that too). Cleaned everything a couple of times, fixed a small bubble on the floor and then installed hush mats through out. Put in new carpet, reupholstered the seats, new correct steering wheel, seat belts (nos), carpet on the plastic panels, and even a new console, lid, and shifter and ebrake. Swapped the 86 shifter for a later one, and new headliner. I bought a original dash that was perfect, but it cracked within a couple of months. I replaced that with a brand new repo. You cant even tell. We have fixed collapsed lines on the brakes, new calipers, put on new wheels and tires, and a new muffler. We then have been working on the last couple of weeks on getting this motor pulled. We will totally clean up the engine bay and get everything looking good before putting this engine in during this winter. I also purchased some new pins/bushings/hinge kit for the doors. The drivers door is starting to hang up from sagging. I also will be putting in a new heater core that I have sitting here in a box while everything is out also. We are thinking of spring having this new motor in, and then of course the fun begins of trying to get this thing tuned, This is the only part I really worry about. I have all the stuff from Moates, but without any skill in that dept. I doubt that will go anywhere.

That and how we will get this thing to a shop where we can get the headers done and the new walboro pump put in. 2 things I can't accomplish in my garage. Oh well, enough with the background, enjoy some pics!

Ok, so I have been finally getting some time and warm enough weather to finish my swap. I went a different direction than originally planned, hence why it has been taking so long. I have been cleaning the engine bay and getting it prepped to paint up (nothing fancy, just rattle can), and while doing so, I decided now would be the best time to just bite the bullet and go with the Holley HP system so i would be ahead of the curve with tuning and future upgrades, etc. This is also requiring me to change to Speed Density. I obviously have MAF. So I've been figuring out how I'm going to set up a serpentine system, what I have to do for the a/c system, etc. Long post short; going to purchase the GM Performance serpentine kit (all inclusive). I am also going to purchase the Original Air stage 3 A/c system upgrade. This should put everything where I need it to be, plus get my a/c working and upgraded to the newer refrigerant. One issue I have, referencing this picture of the front of my stealth ram, is what is the actual part that goes in the hole with the tape (i guess its for my heater hose-cant get the one of my tpi intake) and do I just connect it by hose to the cooling valve contraption that connect to the heater core? Also, need to know what to do with the hole under that on the intake that is open in the picture (no tape). Ive seen just a plug screwed in there, and read about other uses that didn't make sense to me. This is all I have left to put on engine other that flexplate, and pcv setup. Not sure about the best way for that either. Thanks guys!
