Have a 1985 Iroc-Z that I am the original owner. Drove for several years and then collected dust in my garage. Have decided to do a complete tear down and rebuild with a modern drivetrain. Plan is 440CI LSX, 4L60e trans, Moser built 12-bolt, all UMI tubular suspension, sway bars, poly bushings, etc. Complete rewire of car and switching to Holley Dominator EMS. 6-point cage, full paint and body work, and custom leather interior. Wilwood brakes all around along with rebuild of all systems in car not mentioned. Some pics of teardown. I will post more as progress continues.

Sold the car to a neighbor about 11 years ago and he spent a little money on it. Tune, new carpet, stereo. Drove about a year then got caught in an affair and wife took him to cleaners. So, bought car back from him. Point of story is he had the entire inside floorboards and rear area “insulated “ with foil backed butyl based roof seam insulation. Kind of crap you get at Lowe’s/Home Depot. Have spent the last week with a vibrating scraper and then wiping residual tar with lacquer thinner. PITA. I know some folks advocate this as poor mans Dynomat. Dont. Just don’t!

No. Built mainly for structural strength and some safety makes me feel better. I see cars at the track with no cages and no safety gear and they let them roll down the strip. My car is mostly for the street. If I do go to the track and they won’t let me run, won’t bother me. I didn’t want a Interior I had to crawl in.

Yes they are billet. But waiting on powder coated ones in black. When they come in I’ll swap them out. And everything on this engine is expensive. LOL.

Thats the truth of it right there. High performance is high quality. When you said the pan was expensive i was thinking more than that. Thats pretty average for a pan. Thanks for sharing the dyno run. That engine is just awesome!

Spent some time at Circle-D transmissions in Houston yesterday. They are doing my 4l60e tranny build. The tech building the trans walked me through the process of what they were doing and why they use certain parts in their builds. It was obvious he knows what he is doing. Will pick up tranny and convertor next week.

Getting ready for transport to the paint shop. Car is solid on carriage but have concerns about bouncing on piggyback wrecker. Any wrecker drivers in the forums? Your comments welcome. Also going to secure body to carriage using 2x4 inside floor with bolt through 2x4 then going through all 4 drain holes then into 4x4 of carriage.

Car on flatbed wrecker to paint shop. Finding a shop to do a complete paint job(top, bottom, and inside) was a PITA. Also finding a shop that does soda/sand blasting was difficult. Amazes me that as big as the car scene is in the Houston Area, how few shops do resto work. While I understand the quick money is in collision work, the amount of work various shops have to turn down is huge. They claim that competent workers are difficult to find. So I wound up using a Corvette Restoration shop. Car will be there about 3 months. The waiting starts.

scooter 07-18-2019 06:21 PM

Re: The LSX Swap Build Thread

Doing that much work to a car doesn't pay well enough. A production shop dealing with insurance is making money on an order of magnitude higher than doing something like that, just a sad truth.

Body guys did a great job fitting everything, however new hood does not fit perfect. Gap on passenger side a bit wider than drivers side. The downside of aftermarket parts. Not the body man's fault. Something I'll have to live with. But I guarantee every Tom, Dick, and Harry will point it out.
