SBC L31 to 700R4 I got all the parts together and finally putting everything together. I have replaced the L69 with SBC L31 R. I paired it up with the 700R4 that came with the 84' Z/28 HO. Obviously, I am switching from 2-piece RMS to a 1-piece RMS. I got the bellhousing bolts put in but I ran into a problem. There is about a .300 in gap between the torque converter and the flexplate. The holes line up perfectly though. I got pictures. How should I remedy the problem? https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.thi...6234fb7a4.jpeg |
Re: SBC L31 to 700R4 Does the converter slide forward? Flexplate on correct? |
Re: SBC L31 to 700R4 It slides forward but I am afraid it'll be too far from the pump. I am 99.999% sure the flexplate is on correct. |
Re: SBC L31 to 700R4 The converter is not supposed to be bottomed out in the pump. 1/8" clearance is ideal. Use flat washers between to achieve that clearance. Your flexplate IS installed correctly. |
Re: SBC L31 to 700R4 Agreed. You're in good shape. Rule of thumb for me has usually been .100" of converter pull-out from dead bottomed; just a shade under 1/8". I'm not gonna split the difference. Anything in that range, from 1/16" up to 3/16" (.06" to .19" more or less), is good and safe and acceptable. Less than .06", or approaching or more than ¼" (.250"), needs work. All you need is, "enough" engagement of the converter to the pump "ears", and at the same time, "enough" slack in there that the converter isn't hammering on the pump all the time. Key word is "enough" but not "too much". A washer or 2 and you'll be good. |
