Starters and Shorty Headers

I just put a set of summit headers on my car and I drove it home from my dad's house where I worked on it... this morning I go out to drive it to work and it turned over and fired up and then died... my idle isn't adjusted perfectly so that's not really an issue. I went to start it again and this time the starter just clicks... one click as if it's engaging the gear but not turning. I know the battery is fully charged so it would seem an obvious conclusion that the starter motor itself is dead.

With my header install, I removed the heat shields as I was under the impression that they're unnecessary after removing the manifold... and there's no good way to mount them after removing the manifolds. Is it possible that heat killed my starter even if I've got a good 2-3 inches of clearance between the headers and starter? Or is it just a stupid coincidence and a good starter would have no issues?

BTW I love the sound of the hooker cat-back... 10 miles on it and I've already sworn off Flowmasters for good.

Re: Starters and Shorty Headers

My headmans are 1/2 inch from my starter because i have a tright flywheel and starter which moves it out further to the headser, after dogging the hell out of my 86 TA i can kill it and it starts back fine, the heat might have finished yours off but i doubt it will be a problem with a new starter.

Re: Starters and Shorty Headers

before you get any ideas, check your battery connections. You probably have a bad ground. Check your battery again, and recharge. Click click click means dead battery. SINGLE click usually means bad ground.

Even if your started died from heat, it wouldnt happen that quickly. HOwever, the headers give off MORE heat than a manifold. SO if u ever needed a heatshield, now would be the time. Get a wrap instead of the plate, and wrap ur starter if youre worried.
